Chapter three
I hadn’t been able to sleep the whole night. I knew if I looked in the mirror, my eyes would be swollen and filled with great sadness. I was lying on the cold floor of the cell that felt as depressing ad it looked.
“Get up!”
The voice was commanding and sharp. It made the hairs on my skin stand on stiff end. I didn’t know who the voice was referring nor who it belonged to but I reacted before I could decipher it.
“Stand on your feet, Thaleia!”
The Alpha? I quickly stood and turned to see him standing just outside the cell. His face was grim and his stare cold. So cold I felt shivers run through my spine. A guard was unlocking the cell, I guess he was the one that had commanded me to rise. The other two women had risen and had their heads bowed when they saw the Alpha.
“Alpha”
I took two unsure, frightened steps forward. I already missed how he’d laughed and stroked my cheek when we had both discovered I was his mate. My eyes stung with tears, I blinked.
“Alpha.”
I called him again but he didn’t respond.
“Take her out for her daily punishment.”
He ordered the guard.
“Daily punishment?”
I asked, my voice shook in sheer fear. The tears fell now, I couldn’t stop them.
“Alpha you have to believe me. I didn’t do it. I didn’t kill Zephne. I didn’t even know she was dead until you mentioned it at the party yesterday.”
I knelt, hoping to get through to him. Hoping he would see I was innocent.
“Don’t call my sister’s name with that lying, evil mouth of yours. And to think I was getting married to a good person. To think the Moon Goddess had blessed me with a graceful mate. You’re nothing but a murderer. You should not be found amongst us.”
He spat with so much venom laced in every words. I literally felt the killing effect of the venom. I trembled badly that I knew if I was standing in that moment, my legs would’ve given away.
“But I didn’t do anything, Alpha. Someone is trying to set me up.”
I was fully bawling now.
“Aloha please, I beg of you. Let my daughter go. She’s innocent.”
It was shocking but at the same, relieving to see my mother rush into the place. She was still wearing her nightwear. How she was able to get past the guards or how she knew exactly the cell I was put in didn’t matter to me in that very instant. I was just glad she was, maybe the Alpha might listen to her. Just maybe.
“What are you doing here, Zenra? How did you know your daughter is here?”
The Alpha questioned my mother. I knew how much he respected my family and he was kind of fond of my mother. But the look on his face was an obvious telltale that he might not consider that fondness this time.
“That’s not the point at the moment, Alpha. Please just hear her out. You know she’s not a killer. Please, let my baby girl out of that place.”
My mother pleaded, her eyes were filled and tears were falling onto her nightwear.
“Zenra, you know the crime your daughter committed. She killed my sister. She’s a murderer.”
“But have you tried to find out if she actually did? Or would you just believe the words of Paleia? You know Thaleia. You once told me she was a lovely girl and that I was blessed to have her.”
“That was before she decided to kill my sister. She totally had me there. I was wrong about her.”
His gaze came back to mine and the hate there was just overwhelming.
“I know you don’t believe that. Would you just take Paleia’s words for it? Would you believe the words of another over that of your mate?”
If it was possible for my heart to break more, it did. So Paleia had spread that lied against me. She had gone and told the Alpha that I killed his sister. I know we weren’t the best sisters but I would never believe she would go to such length? And for what reason? Was she envious of my mate-bond with the Alpha?
“Paleia is her twin sister. Why would she lie to me against her own blood? What would be her gain?”
And the worse was the Alpha believed her completely, there was no room for doubts or another perspective.
“They are not on the best of terms. Paleia is not what you think she is.”
“Zenra, how can you talk about your daughter like that? It only shows how much you favor Thaleia over Paleia. Zenra, I’d suggest you leave this place. It is because of your husband who is my Omega, that is why I’m not punishing you too. But don’t push your luck. Zenra, leave!”
“No! I won’t leave my daughter. If you want to kill her, then you’d have to kill me too. Kill me first Alpha, because I won’t stay alive and watch you kill my daughter.”
My mother’s tears broke my heart. It was hard seeing her that way. I couldn’t let her continue like this. The guard had dragged me outside.
“Mama.”
She came to me and hugged me.
“Mama please go home.”
“No, I won’t. I won’t leave you here. You’re innocent.”
“I’m glad you know that. Even if you’re the only person who believes me, I am happy. Just please, stop coming around here again. If the Moon Goddess wills it, then there’s nothing you or I can do to stop it.”
“Don’t talk like that, Thaleia. The Moon Goddess will never give you such a fate.”
“I don’t know, mama. This is happening and the Alpha believes I am responsible for Zephne’s death. Please, just go and take care of yourself.”
“The Moon Goddess won’t let you die, Thaleia.”
“I can’t put my hopes up.”
“Take her away at once!”
My mother stubbornly clung to me as I was roughly taken away.
“Let go, mama.”
I didn’t want her to let go but I was scared of the Alpha making do on his word and throwing her in cell. Her sobs pierced my soul as I was taken away.
“Alpha if anything happens to my daughter, you’re going to bury me too.”
Those were the last words I heard before I pulled into a dark hallway.
