Kane pulls on his shorts, and strides over to me. “Are you ok?”

I look up at his handsome, worry-stricken face. He grabs my hand to help me up.

“Yes, I’m fine.” I say, as I adjust my dress making sure I’m covered, and take his hand.

“Leo, my wolf is apologizing. He knew Penny wanted to be marked as we mated. I wasn’t thinking until it was too late, when I saw the horror on your face… I… I’m so sorry, please forgive me.” Kane says, as he turns away from me.

I can feel his sadness through our bond. “Penny, how can we have this connection without being marked?”

Penny ignores my question, I feel her discontent in the back of my mind. Obviously, my wolf is upset with me from stopping the marking process.

“Kane?”

“Yes Gabriella?” He responds without looking at me.

I feel a pang of guilt in my chest. It feels as if gravity is pulling me towards him. I reached and stroke his arm. “Can we get to know one another a little better before we take our relationship to the next level? I know it may feel a little late, especially after being intimate. My wolf took control, and I couldn’t stop her.”

“Do you not recognize me as your mate? I felt you the moment you stepped on this island. My soul ignited, I knew you were upset and needed me. That’s why I came to you.” Kane says, as he turns to face me.

“I will not reject you. Even if I wanted to Penny would never allow it. I just want to get to know you, without the effect of the bond.”

“Leo, what are we going to do? Our mate doesn’t want us. The only reason why she didn’t reject us is because her wolf won’t let her.”

“Penny would never reject us.” Leo says confidently.

“I heard, but what about Gabriella? She herself said she didn’t want a mate.”

“We are her mate. Her only mate. Speak to her, get to know her. She’s faced challenges just as we have.”

I know my wolf is right. “So, um, what do you want to know?”

Gabriella smiles warmly at me. “Well lets start with the basics, and we can see where it goes.”

“Ok, the basics?” I repeat back to my mate.

“Kane would you mind if we start walking. We can go back towards town.”

“Sure. Where are you staying?”

“Oh, we’re at the Royal Lahaina.” She responds, I see a flash of worry in her eyes before she lets it pass.

“We?” I couldn’t help but ask aloud.

“Oh ya, my best friend, and future beta, Sarah. We’re here as a present from my parents for graduating college, and before I take over as Alpha. Well, my dad tried to sneak warriors on the trip with us, but since they joined us on the plane it was really hard to hide them.” Gabby smiles.

“Tell me about your family. Are you an only child?”

We see her face fall, as the sparkle leaves her eyes. “STUPID HUMAN! Make mate feel better now!” Leo yells.

“Gabriella, I’m sorry, we don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want. Ummm… what’s your favorite color?”

She grabs my hand and starts laughing hysterically. “My favorite color?”

I smile back at her, “Yeah. My favorite color is now blue, the color of your eyes.”

She turns her head away from me as we continue down the trail. “I had an older brother; his name was Rob. My parents were going to hand the pack over to him the year after he found his mate.”

She was quite for a few minutes as we walked closer to town. “What was your brother like?”

“He was amazing. He was kind, and fierce. Everything a good Alpha should be.”

“Baby, you don’t have to keep talking about it if it makes you upset.”

“Thanks Kane, but it’s only fair you understand what you’re getting if you decide to stay with me.”

Leo let out a growl, and came forward to share control, “We would never leave you willingly, don’t ever doubt our commitment to you. I know we just met, but I need you to understand, you are it for us.”

She smiles sadly, “My brother was murdered by his so-called mate, when I was ten.”

“I’m so sorry.” I say

“Me too. Let talk about you.”

I gaze at my mate, “Ok mate, what would you like to know?”

“What brought you to Hawaii?”

“I was in a coma, well according to the pack Doctor, I had died, but they were able to revive me and put me in a medically induced coma in hopes of saving my wolf and I. When I woke, my pack didn’t feel like mine. Leo and I felt drawn to the island, like we were being led.”

“So ..” before my mate can finish, I hear people approaching us, I scented the air, and pull Gabriella behind me.

“Kane, what the heck? What’s wrong?”

“Someone’s coming. Other wolves.”

I see Gabriella go on alert too, before I have a chance to shift, we hear a roar.

“STEP AWAY FROM HER.”
