Ch 8

“Maybe no one ever told you before, maybe no one ever cared, but here it is: it’s tough what you went through. It’s tough what you do. You feel like life is hard, Damnit, it is hard. What you did at the very least, you get to know that much. You survived and are surviving the impossible. Is it hard waking up? Do nightmares keep you awake? That’s because you are being strong. Don’t you ever put yourself down for having a hard life. I wish the world would stop for a minute to let you catch your breath. But it doesn’t, and you do a damn good job of keeping up with those who have it a lot easier.” - Nausicca Twila Unknown I never thought I’d miss the sight of another wolf, or have the feeling of belonging. When I saw her, it felt different, I felt home. Sarah “Ugh I feel like crap, Cricket, why didn’t you stop us?” “There was not stopping Gabby last night, so why not partake in the fun?” “Oh really, then is there a reason why we woke up alone, and with a hangover?” “Because Alpha wouldn’t appreciate us bringing someone back.” I look over at the clock, and notice its 7 am, hmm I wonder why Gabby hasn’t linked us awake yet. I walk out to the patio of the cottage, and notice someone on the lounge chairs. As I get closer, I see Gabby zoning out looking at the ocean. “How’s the coffee Gabriella?” Cricket and I wait for a response. “Alpha. …… Hello, earth to Gabby.” “Oh sorry, did you say something?” “I just asked how you were liking the Kona coffee? But you seem entrenched in thought. I can go sit on the couch and leave you to your thoughts.” “Don’t be silly, come sit.” “Are you sure everything’s ok?” I cross to join her, as she grabs another coffee cup, pours the coffee, then adds cream and sugar. “Thank you. Now, what’s up?” “What do you mean? I’m just relaxing like you and my parents have been telling me to do.” “Ok, I just wanted to make sure you were good.” “Always. I’m going to link the warriors, to be down here in 15 minutes, we’ll go on our run before it gets too hot.” Shit, I should have known. “Gabs, it’s such a beautiful morning, let’s just relax.” “Sarah, just because we’re on vacation doesn’t mean we can slack off. We’re going to be the Alpha and Beta of the largest packs in California. Our plans are to expand, and be one of the largest in the country. We need to work harder, and be better than our male counter parts.” “Gabby, you have nothing to prove. You are already a great leader, a fierce warrior, and advocate for our people. I feel like there’s some underlying meaning, and that I’m out of the loop. Is this about Rob?” Cricket links in a panic, “Sarah! Don’t poke at Penny and Gabby!” “Sarah, you may be my best friend, but never forget that you are my beta.” “Yes Alpha. I’ll be in my room.” Gabriella “Are you sure you weren’t too hard on Sarah?” “Penny, please don’t start. She needs to know that this isn’t college anymore. We are going to take over the pack.” “Gabs, if she doesn’t question you, who will? We picked her because she knows us, sometimes I feel, better than we know ourselves. Sarah has always stood by us, kept our secrets, and has a sense when we’re not at ease. She is the perfect beta for us.” “I know.” I link the warriors and Sarah as I walk back into my room to change, for our beach run in ten minutes. “Pen, do you think it’s weird that Matt hasn’t tried to contact us at all? Not even a text? I mean I know we agreed that breaking it off would be for the best, but it’s just not like him.” “I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe he took your words to heart with the ultimatum he presented? Or maybe he went by the condo and saw that we had no intention of going back?” “Maybe. It could be the clean break we were looking for.” --- Sarah “Hey Neil and Jaxon! How’d did you guys sleep?” “Sleep? Who said we went to bed?” Jaxon said laughing. “Better not let your Alpha hear you.” I said turning to face the water. “What am I not hearing?” “Nothing” the three of us say in unison. “Alright, we’re going to run a quick three miles. Then we can grab breakfast, and have a beach day?” We all nod, and begin to run. Jaxon and I run out front, followed by Gabriella and Neil. As we’re running down the beach, I get a link from Neil, “Hey do you think that we’re just going to hang by the beach today? I thought we were going to go back to the forest by the waterfall and let our wolves out?” “Well, why don’t you mention to Alpha the area where black sand beach is, our guide mentioned there were great mountain areas there where we could hike, and then cool off?” “Alright. Do you think I should mention it when we get to the restaurant, after she’s eaten?” “Haha, you know Gabby so well.” We finish our run, and sit pool front at the hotel restaurant. We order food and drinks, the warriors and Gabby are chatting, as I observe our surroundings. “Hey I’m going to run to the coffee shop while we’re waiting for our food. Anyone want anything?” “I’ll come with you, guys, will you stay here, and link us when they bring out our food?” Gabriella asks. “Sure Alpha.” Gabby and I walk in silence to the coffee shop, when she links me, “I’m sorry Sarah, for this morning.” “Don’t worry about it Alpha.” “Alpha? Why so formal? I shrug my shoulders, and place our order. We’re walking back and Cricket goes on alert. “Gabby, lets get back to the table, I think our food is coming.” We walk quickly back to the pool where we were seated. Once we sit we hear someone yell, “WHAT THE F*CK is going on here?”
