Jax’s POV
Frank, the lying snake, aimed his gun at me, then fired.
The bullet hit my arm. The pain was hot and sharp. I fell back against the car.
Layla screamed. Her voice cut through the noise.
Frank fired again. This bullet hit near my chest. The impact knocked the air from my lungs. My vision went black for a second. I was on the ground.
I heard Layla scream again. Not for me. She was fighting. "No! Stop!"
I forced my eyes open. The world was blurry. I saw Layla. She was out of the car. She grabbed her father's arm. She tried to take the gun.
Frank was strong. He was angry. He yelled words I could not hear. He swung his arm hard. His hand hit Layla's head.
She went down. Her body fell to the dirt. She did not move.
My heart stopped.
