A Heart That Breaks Twice

1012 Words
The morning sun filtered through the curtains in soft, golden beams, but I could barely see it. My hands were still trembling, my mind lost in a haze. The shock had not worn off. I was alive. I stumbled to the window and gazed out at the familiar sight of the pack’s sprawling territory. The tall trees swayed in the early breeze, the scent of pine and earth mingling in the air. It was all so... normal. Except I wasn’t. I wasn’t the girl I had been when I had left this place. The girl who had loved Kieran blindly, trusting in the bond we shared. That innocent girl was dead. I was reborn. But what did that mean? I clenched my hands into fists, the memories from my previous life crashing into my mind like a brutal wave. His cold eyes. His cruel words. His cruel touch. The way he betrayed me. I could feel his mark on me even now. The invisible scar he had left when he claimed another woman, another life, another future. Our bond had been severed. But my anger? That still burned. My agony was roaring inside me. I had died for nothing. I had given him my loyalty, my heart, my very soul. And for what? To be nothing more than a footnote in his life, a failed experiment he could discard when it no longer suited him. I swore, my hands shaking with the effort not to break the glass before me. This time—this time, he would regret it. The door creaked open behind me, and I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. "Lena," I whispered, my voice rough. She had been my childhood friend, my confidante. And the only person I could trust in this new world I found myself in. "You’re awake." She crossed the room and stood next to me, her presence a comfort I hadn’t known I needed. She hadn’t aged. She was still the same—bright-eyed, full of energy, the girl I had laughed with under the moonlight. "I’m not sure whether to be happy or terrified," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Lena shot me a soft, knowing look. "You’re both, Elara." Her hand reached for mine, squeezing it gently. "I know it’s hard to understand, but you have a second chance. You have time to fix everything." I shook my head, the weight of it all pressing down on me. "Time? Time doesn’t matter. Kieran—" Her eyes hardened. "Don’t let him win. He might have broken you once, but not again." I glanced at her, confused. "What do you mean?" "You know, don’t you? You’ve been given a gift—a second chance. But you must make your move carefully. You can’t let your anger cloud your judgment, not when you have the power to destroy him." I could feel the fire rising in my chest again—the hot, jagged rage that I had buried when I died. It was all too clear now: the vengeance wasn’t just something I needed to claim for myself. It was my destiny. But Lena’s words were a lifeline, one I wasn’t sure I was ready to hold onto. Could I really do this? Could I face the man who had shattered me, the one who still haunted my nightmares, and rip his world apart without losing myself again? I turned back to the window, staring out at the land I had once called home, now a prison I would never escape from. I could feel it—the tension in the air, the weight of the pack's expectations. Everyone had their eyes on me now. But the only pair of eyes I cared about? Kieran's. "Why do I feel like I’m being watched?" I asked quietly, my chest tightening. Lena chuckled softly. "Because you are." She turned toward the door. "Everyone knows you’re back. The Alpha has already ordered a special meeting for this evening. You know what that means, right?" I swallowed hard, my heart skipping a beat. "A public display of power. To remind me of my place." "Exactly. He’ll want to make sure you understand your place—as his broken mate." I flinched, but Lena wasn’t finished. "But you’re not broken, Elara. You’re stronger than you think. You’ve always been strong. You just have to remember who you are." I met her gaze, a flicker of defiance stirring deep within me. "Who am I, then?" Lena smiled, a soft but knowing smile. "You’re the one who is going to make him beg for your forgiveness. You’re the one who’s going to rip his world apart—piece by piece." My lips curled into a bitter smile of my own. "And I’ll start with his pride." --- That evening, the pack gathered in the main hall, the same place where Kieran had rejected me all those months ago. I stood at the back, my posture straight, my heart thundering in my chest as I waited for the meeting to begin. The air was thick with tension. Kieran's scent lingered like smoke, mingling with the rest of the pack’s scents, reminding me that this was his territory. But it wasn’t just his anymore. Not anymore. The Alpha took his place at the front, his golden eyes scanning the room, and my pulse quickened. There he was—the man who had broken me, the man I had once loved. He didn’t acknowledge me. Of course, he wouldn’t. But I felt the weight of his gaze on me anyway. He knew. He could feel the shift in me—the change in the way I carried myself. The fire in my eyes. He might have broken me once, but he wouldn’t get away with it a second time. As he spoke to the pack, outlining his plans for the future, I barely heard him. My thoughts were consumed with the upcoming battle. The dance of power that was about to unfold. And I would be its queen.
