Episode one
The Ash of the Crown
The first rays of dawn did not bring light to the mountain camp; they brought an oppressive, slate-gray haze that filtered through the jagged cracks of the cavern ceiling. Aurelia sat frozen on the edge of the wooden cot, her hands tightly clasped in her lap to stop their shivering. The sheer exhaustion of the trek had finally caught up with her, leaving her muscles aching and her mind hyper-alert. The heavy silk of her court gown felt like cold lead against her skin, caked with dry mud and smelling faintly of the woodsmoke that drifted from the main chamber.
She hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the wet, terrifying thuds of her father’s guards falling in the mud, or she saw those volatile, molten gold eyes of Malakor pinning her to the carriage seat.
A sharp, metallic click echoed through the narrow stone corridor outside. Aurelia braced herself, straightening her spine and lifting her chin as a tall shadow stretched across the parallel iron bars of her cell door.
It wasn't Torin returning with more water.
Vance stepped into the dim light of the torch bracket. The pack’s tracker had discarded his heavy, tattered traveling cloak, revealing a lean, deceptively muscular frame clad in dark, form-fitting leather. He didn't carry a visible sword, but a row of thin, wicked-looking throwing knives was strapped across his chest. He stood completely still, his pale, calculating eyes sweeping over her with the clinical precision of a falcon measuring its prey. He sniffed the air subtly, his nostrils flaring as he analyzed the scent of her fear and fatigue.
"Your heart rate is still dangerously high," Vance said, his voice dropping into that cool, precise tone that felt sharper than a razor blade. He pulled a heavy iron key from his belt, unlocking the grate with a slow, deliberate twist. "And you haven't touched the bread Torin left for you. Starving yourself won't make the royal scouts find you any faster, princess."
"I am not starving myself," Aurelia replied, her voice cold and steady despite the dry roughness in her throat. "I simply do not have an appetite for the hospitality of thieves and outlaws."
Vance let out a low, breathy sound that might have been a laugh if his face wasn't completely devoid of emotion. He stepped inside the small cell, his movements so utterly silent that he didn't even disturb the dust on the stone floor. He stopped exactly three feet away from her—just outside her personal space, but close enough that she could feel the cold, predatory aura radiating off his skin.
"Outlaws," he murmured, tilting his head as he studied the gold embroidery on her torn bodice. "An easy word for a royal to use. It saves you the trouble of wondering why we were cast out into these frozen peaks in the first place. Your father signed the decree that burned our ancestral pack lands to ash, Aurelia. We aren't thieves. We are simply collecting the debt in blood and territory."
Before she could defend her father’s crown, Vance reached out with blinding speed. Aurelia flinched, expecting a blow, but his cold, slender fingers merely caught the edge of her chin. His grip was light but unyielding, forcing her face upward into the gray morning light. He leaned down, his pale eyes searching hers with a terrifyingly deep intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"Don't look for an exit," Vance whispered, his breath ghosting over her lips. "I spent the last four hours setting tracking traps along every single mountain path within five miles of this ravine. If you try to run, I will know the exact second your foot touches the dirt. And I am far less gentle than Torin when it comes to bringing back stray property."
"Am I property to you, Vance?" she snapped, refusing to break eye contact, her stubborn pride flaring through the terror.
His gaze flicked down to her lips for a brief, dangerous second before returning to her eyes. "Right now, you are survival. Don't ruin your value by acting foolishly."
He released her chin as quickly as he had grabbed it, stepping back into the corridor. "Come. Malakor wants you in the main chamber. And he is not a patient man."
Aurelia stood up, her legs slightly unstable as she followed Vance out of the cell and down the narrow, torch-lit tunnel. As they entered the massive central cavern, the smell of roasted meat and strong ale hit her. A large roaring fire crackled in the central hearth, casting long, violent orange shadows across the ancient stone pillars.
Kiran was sitting sideways on the edge of the massive oak table, lazily spinning a silver dagger between his fingers with practiced ease. When Aurelia walked into the room, he stopped the blade instantly, a bright, mocking smile lighting up his sharp features.
"Ah, the sleeping beauty arises," Kiran purred, his bright blue eyes dancing with amusement as he took in her ruined gown. He hopped off the table, stepping into her path with that fluid, panther-like grace. "You look absolutely spectacular for someone who spent the night in a stone cage, sweetheart. Tell me, did Torin keep you warm, or do I need to volunteer for the night watch next time?"
"Step aside, Kiran," Vance warned from behind her, his voice cutting through the rogue's playful tone like ice.
"Oh, come on, Vance. Don't be such a bore," Kiran pouted, though his eyes never left Aurelia's face. He stepped closer, leaning in until his silver-blonde hair brushed against her cheek. He took a deep, exaggerated breath, inhaling her scent. "She smells like roses and palace gardens. It’s intoxicating. Much better than the smell of wet fur and damp rocks we usually deal with."
Aurelia stepped back, her hand instinctively rising to push him away, but Kiran caught her hand mid-air. His palm was warm, his fingers wrapping around hers with a deceptive, playful strength. He didn't hurt her, but he didn't let go either. He turned her hand over, his thumb lightly brushing across her palm, sending a sharp, unexpected jolt of heat straight up her arm.
"Let go of me," Aurelia hissed, trying to pull away.
"Such a fiery little thing," Kiran chuckled, his blue eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp hint of Alpha dominance that made her knees feel weak. "I like it. A princess with claws. Just remember, out here, we like to break things that fight back."
"Kiran. Release her."
The booming command echoed from the dark far side of the room, vibrating through the limestone walls. Malakor stepped out from the shadows near the back wall, his massive frame dominating the space instantly. His wild, dark hair was pushed back, and his molten gold eyes were fixed entirely on Kiran’s hand wrapped around Aurelia’s wrist. A dark, dangerous growl rattled deep in the leader’s chest, a sound that made Kiran instantly drop her hand and take a step back, his playful smirk fading into a tense, respectful nod.
Malakor walked over to the oak table, slamming a heavy leather map case onto the wood. The jagged, silvery scar on his face twisted as he glared down at the parchment.
"The royal scouts have already reached the border crossing," Malakor said, his gravelly voice tight with frustration. He looked up, his burning golden eyes locking onto Aurelia like a predator targeting its prey. "And your precious fiancé, Prince Julian, has done something we didn't expect."
Aurelia stepped toward the table, her curiosity overriding her caution. "What has he done? Has he mobilized the legions?"
Malakor barked a dark, humorless laugh, leaning his massive hands on the edge of the table as he loomed over her. "Legions? No. The coward didn't send soldiers to rescue his beautiful bride. He closed the border gates, declared the eastern highway under quarantine, and put a bounty on your head—dead or alive."
Aurelia felt the blood drain entirely from her face. Her chest tightened until she could barely breathe. "What? No... that's impossible. Julian wouldn't..."
"He did," Vance spoke up, stepping up to the other side of the table, his pale eyes dead and serious. "He told the high council that the outcasts had infected you with a blood-scourge. He is using your k********g as a political excuse to lock down the borders and claim sole ownership of your father’s throne without needing to marry you."
The reality of the words crashed over Aurelia like an avalanche. She wasn't just a bargaining chip anymore. To her own kingdom, to the man she was forced to betroth, she was already a ghost. A political liability to be eliminated.
Malakor stepped around the table, stopping directly in front of her. He was so close she could feel the intense, radiating heat of his massive body. He reached out, his thick, calloused hand wrapping around the back of her neck, his thumb resting right against the heavy pulse point at her throat. He didn't squeeze, but the absolute power of his grip pinned her in place. He leaned down, his molten eyes burning into hers with a fierce, possessive intensity.
"Your kingdom abandoned you, little princess," Malakor growled, his voice a low, heavy rumble that sent a terrifying, exhilarating shiver straight down her spine. "You have no palace to go back to. You have no marble prince coming to save you. You belong to the pack now. And we are going to teach you exactly how an outcast survives."
