Episode 1: Into the Belly of the Mountain The entrance to the Black Ridge subterranean network looked like a jagged, weeping wound in the side of the mountain. Vines covered in razor-sharp thorns hung over the dark stone archway, dripping with the freezing runoff of the high-altitude thaws. The morning sun had barely managed to clear the eastern peaks, casting a pale, sickly light that died the moment it touched the heavy, absolute shadows waiting inside the cavern. The air rolling out from the deep stone tunnel smelled of sulfur, wet iron, and centuries of stagnation. It was a suffocating chill that seeped straight through Aurelia’s ruined silk gown, making her teeth click together before she even took her first step inside. "Stay close," Torin rumbled beside her, his deep, velvety bass voice echoing softly against the rock face. The giant didn't look back to see if she was following. He simply reached back, his massive, heavily muscled forearm crossing in front of her body to guide her into the dark. The sheer, radiating heat of his bare, rune-tattooed skin felt like a furnace against the freezing mountain wind. Aurelia didn't hesitate. She stepped into the darkness, her ruined slippers slipping slightly on the slick, wet gravel of the tunnel floor before she found her footing. She instinctively reached out, her fingers brushing against the solid, leather-bound armor protecting Torin’s flank. He didn't flinch at her touch; instead, his posture seemed to steady, his broad shoulders expanding as if bracing to carry the weight of the entire mountain for her. At the front of their small, tense formation, Vance moved like a ghost. The pack’s tracker had pulled a small, glowing crystal from his leather vest—a rare piece of luminescent mountain ore that cast a faint, ghostly blue light across the limestone path. He didn't use a torch; open fire would produce smoke that could easily escape through the mountain cracks, signaling their exact location to any mercenary tracking hounds patrolling the outer ridges. Vance stepped deliberately, his pale eyes tracking the ground, the low-hanging stalactites, and the wet walls with a clinical, terrifying focus. Every few yards, he would pause, his nostrils flaring as he sifted through the damp air for any foreign scent that shouldn't belong in the dark. "The Iron Fangs are already in the lower valley," Vance whispered, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the cave like an icicle. He didn't turn around to look at the rest of the pack, his focus entirely on the path ahead. "I can smell the sulfur from their black-powder lanterns on the wind. They are testing the lower cavern gates. If they find the blocked paths, they will turn their attention to the upper ledges within two hours. We need to reach the central chasm before the sun hits its peak." "Then we stop wasting time talking," Malakor growled from right behind Aurelia. The Alpha leader was a constant, heavy pressure at her back. He walked with a restless, violent energy, his molten gold eyes scanning the dark ceiling as if he were begging for an enemy to jump out of the shadows. The raw scent of cedar and ozone rolling off his massive frame was intoxicatingly thick in the tight, confined space of the tunnel, wrapping around Aurelia’s senses until she could think of nothing else. He was so close she could hear the rhythmic, deep rise and fall of his chest, and occasionally, his leather armor would brush against the silk of her dress, sending a sharp, electric jolt of awareness straight down her spine. "Keep your pace up, princess," Malakor muttered, his rough hand lightly brushing against her shoulder to push her forward. His grip wasn't painful, but the possessive weight of his touch made her breath hitch. "If your royal legs give out in these dark tunnels, I won't hesitate to tie you to my back like cargo." "My legs are perfectly fine, Malakor," Aurelia snapped back, her amber eyes flashing with a fierce, independent pride as she looked over her shoulder at him. She refused to let him see how much the rocky terrain was tearing at her feet. "Focus on your path. I can handle my own." A soft, dark chuckle echoed from the absolute rear of the group. Kiran was walking backward, his bright blue eyes fixed on the dark entrance they had just abandoned. His silver-blonde hair caught the faint blue glow of Vance’s crystal, making him look like a beautiful, wicked demon in the shadows. He was effortlessly turning his favorite silver dagger between his fingers, the metal catching the light in a rhythmic, hypnotic pattern. "Oh, let her fight back, Mal," Kiran purred, a lazy, dangerous smirk spreading across his sharp features. He flicked his eyes toward Aurelia, his gaze dropping to the elegant line of her neck before rising back to meet her eyes. "A princess with a temper is so much more entertaining than a compliant one. Besides, if she gets tired, I am more than happy to carry her. I promise my arms are much more comfortable than yours, boss." "Lock your jaw, Kiran," Malakor barked, a dark, low growl rattling deep within his massive chest, a sound that made the loose gravel on the tunnel floor vibrate. "One more word out of you, and I’ll leave you behind to play with the Iron Fangs." Kiran just winked at Aurelia, completely unfazed by the threat, though he did stop his banter, turning around to face forward as the path began to narrow dangerously. The natural limestone tunnel gradually gave way to a terrifying, high-altitude ledge that hugged the wall of a massive, subterranean chasm. To their right, the stone wall was wet and slick with black moss; to their left, an absolute, bottomless drop swallowed the blue light of Vance's crystal entirely. Deep below, the distant, muffled roar of a rushing underground river echoed up through the darkness, a sound that felt like the steady, predatory growl of a massive beast waiting for them to slip. The ledge was barely wide enough for one person to walk comfortably, forcing the pack into a single, cautious file. Vance slowed his pace, his boots testing the structural stability of the stone before committing his full weight. "The thaw has cracked the bedrock here. Watch your footing. The moisture has made the shale incredibly brittle." Aurelia swallowed hard, the dry roughness in her throat making it difficult to breathe. She pressed her back against the wet, freezing stone wall, her fingers digging into the cracks of the rock to keep her balance. The sheer heights of the palace balconies had never bothered her, but out here, with no iron railings and no guards to catch her, the reality of her mortality felt incredibly thin. Her foot slipped. A small chunk of loose shale fractured beneath the heel of her ruined slipper, sending a shower of loose stones cascading into the pitch-black abyss below. Aurelia gasped, her body tilting dangerously over the edge as she lost her center of gravity. The cold wind of the chasm seemed to pull at her clothes, threatening to drag her down into the roaring dark. Before she could even scream, two massive forces hit her at once. Torin’s large, scarred hand shot forward, his thick fingers wrapping securely around her waist with blinding speed. At the exact same microsecond, Malakor lunged forward from behind, his massive, heavy arm locking across her chest, pinning her back firmly against his hard, leather-clad torso. The two Alphas moved with a synchronized, terrifying reflex, their bodies forming an absolute, unbreakable barrier of muscle and steel around her fragile form. Aurelia froze, suspended between the two giant men, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The sheer, overwhelming heat of both Alphas completely enveloped her, cutting through the bitter subterranean cold in an instant. She could feel Malakor's rapid, powerful chest heaving against her back, his breath hot against the skin of her neck as his jaw clenched tightly in pure, instinctual panic. Torin’s grip around her waist was iron-hard, his dark eyes wide and dilated as his Alpha instincts flared violently at the threat to his charge. The air in the narrow passage grew thick and suffocatingly heavy as both men's dominant, protective auras flooded the tight space. A low, synchronized rumble vibrated through both of their chests—a raw, territorial sound that had nothing to do with hatred and everything to do with a fierce, possessive need to protect what was theirs. "I have her," Torin rumbled, his voice dropping into a deep, dangerous bass that held a sharp edge of warning. His fingers tightened slightly around her waist, refusing to let go. "She’s fine," Malakor growled back, his arm still locked securely across her chest, holding her flush against his heartbeat. His molten gold eyes were fixed on the dark chasm below before snapping up to lock onto Torin’s face. "Move your hand, giant. We need to keep moving." Torin didn't move an inch. The tension between the two strongest members of the pack threatened to fracture the fragile alliance right there on the edge of the cliff. Aurelia forced her lungs to expand, her hands coming up to rest against Malakor’s massive forearm. "I’m steady," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly but clear. "I’m steady. Let me step forward." Slowly, reluctantly, Malakor loosened his grip, his arm sliding away from her chest, though his fingers lingered against her waist for one long, electric second before he stepped back. Torin carefully guided her foot onto a solid piece of granite, his large hand remaining close to her hip until he was certain her balance was completely restored. "Thank you," she murmured, looking from Torin’s heavy, scarred face back to Malakor’s volatile eyes. "Don't thank us yet, princess," Vance’s cool voice called out from the front of the line, cutting through the thick romantic tension like a blade. The tracker was kneeling on the stone path ahead, his hand pressed flat against the ground. He looked back at them, his pale eyes dead and serious in the blue light. "The vibrations in the stone are changing. The Iron Fangs aren't testing the lower gates anymore. They’ve found the upper cave entrance. They are already inside the mountain."
