CHAPTER 03 🎀

Mika Pov. As I walked behind Miss Yuri toward Mr. Kross Devereux’s office, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. No matter how much I told myself I could do this, I couldn’t stop the anxiety creeping in. Why was I so nervous? Devereux Clothing Corp. wasn’t just any company — it was one of the largest fashion brands in the country. This was a place I once dreamed of joining as an employee, not as a model. If I hadn’t been discovered as a model, I probably would’ve ended up here in the first place. We stopped in front of a door made of tinted glass. Miss Yuri cleared her throat before looking at me. “Mr. Kross is inside. He’s expecting you,” she said calmly. I nodded. “Thank you.” “You can do it, Mika,” she encouraged. Have I mentioned how beautiful Yuri is? She looks like a Japanese goddess with her long black hair and pale skin. Stunning. I took a deep breath before pushing the heavy door open. I was immediately greeted by the cold blast of air conditioning. The office was huge — modern, minimalist, and elegant. Behind the desk, a wall of glass offered a view of the city skyline, symbolizing the power and success of the company. Every corner of the room seemed meticulously designed, from the sleek marble floors to the curated art pieces on the walls. I liked the aesthetic. In the center of the office, behind an enormous desk, sat a man whose presence made the room feel even colder. Kross Devereux. Tall, commanding, and seemingly incapable of smiling. His sharp jawline and piercing blue eyes scrutinized me, as though his gaze could see right through me. I forced myself to stay calm and managed a small smile. “Good afternoon, Mr. Devereux,” I greeted, hiding my nerves. Keep your chin up, Mika. Come on. He raised an eyebrow and looked up from the papers he was holding. His face was emotionless, but his eyes were filled with a sharp, analytical gaze. He studied me silently, and I felt the weight of his scrutiny. “Sit down,” he said coolly. I sat in front of his desk, trying to keep my hands from trembling. “You’re Mika?” he asked bluntly. “Yes, sir,” I replied softly. He nodded and leaned back in his chair. “I’ve reviewed your application. You have an interesting background. You were once one of the top models at Demuèr, correct?” I bit the inside of my cheek and nodded. “Yes, sir. I was.” “Why did you leave the modeling industry? You had the highest salary as a model,” he asked again, his tone calm but curious. It felt like I had swallowed a stone. How could I explain that I didn’t want to leave the modeling industry? That I was forced out because I no longer fit their standards? “I needed a change,” I answered. “I wanted something new.” He nodded, though I couldn’t tell if he believed me. He continued to stare at me as if measuring whether my answer was sufficient. “You realize that this role as my secretary is demanding. It requires discipline, efficiency, and a lot of patience. Can you handle that?” “Yes, Mr. Devereux. I’m ready to prove myself,” I replied without hesitation. He went silent again, his eyes fixed on me, searching for any hint of doubt. But I didn’t let him see any weakness. After seven years in the modeling industry, I had built resilience. “I hope you are. Because I don’t tolerate incompetence,” he said coldly. I didn’t flinch. I knew my abilities, and I wouldn’t let him intimidate me. “Understood, Mr. Devereux.” He stood up from his chair and walked to the large window, gazing out at the city, like a king surveying his kingdom. “You’ll start tomorrow. Be here by 8 AM sharp.” “Yes, sir,” I said, rising from my seat. Just as I was about to leave, he spoke again. “Mika.” I turned. “Yes?” “Don’t disappoint me.” I nodded, trying to calm my racing heart. “I won’t.” I left his office feeling like I had just stepped out of a pressure cooker. I could finally breathe again after being submerged for so long. But as I walked down the hallway, I felt a surge of confidence return. I didn’t know what awaited me as Kross Devereux’s secretary, but I wouldn’t let fear or insecurity defeat me. He was handsome and three times wealthier than I was, but I would prove to him that I was worthy of this position. I was in the lobby when my phone rang. It was Sharon. I picked it up and answered. “What happened?” she asked, excitement clear in her voice. “I got the job,” I replied, a mix of exhaustion and joy in my voice. “See? I told you!” she shouted. “I knew you could do it! How do you feel?” “Like I want to lie in bed for a week and eat chips,” I joked. She laughed. “Okay, you can rest — but after that, we’re celebrating!” “Sure, tomorrow,” I said. “I’m tired today.” “Deal!” she said, excitement ringing in her voice before I hung up. As I walked out of the building, I watched the sky turning orange with the setting sun. I felt the weight of everything that had happened today — the interview, getting the job, and starting a new life in a world I never thought I’d enter. But despite it all, I also felt a spark of energy I hadn’t felt in a long time. I took a deep breath and smiled. This was the start of my new journey. Not bad at all. When I got home, I lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling. My mind was filled with emotions — fear, excitement, anxiety. I thought about Kross Devereux’s cold gaze and his words: “Don’t disappoint me.” It felt like a challenge I couldn’t walk away from. I had lost count of how many times I had failed myself, how many times I had been discarded. But each failure taught me new strength. Now that I faced a new opportunity, I wouldn’t let myself be defeated again. Not this time. I got up and wiped off the remaining makeup from my face. Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I saw a woman who was tired but filled with determination. A woman ready to fight again. “Tomorrow is a new day,” I whispered to myself. “I can do this.” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I knew the coming days wouldn’t be easy. But I also knew I was no longer the Mika who gave up easily. This time, I would prove that I still had worth — even in a world of people like Kross Devereux. I was ready to rise again.
