Chapter2: Heartbreak

828 Words
The suite door opened slowly. Only a few inches at first. But that small gap was already enough for Luna to see what was inside the room. And within a single second… her world collapsed. The room lights were bright. The white sheets on the luxurious bed were tangled and disheveled. And in the middle of that bed— Ethan Hale. Luna’s fiancé. His upper body was bare, his hair slightly messy as though he had just been through something deeply intimate. In his arms… was a woman. A woman Luna knew better than anyone. Elena Monroe. The red dress Elena had worn at the party earlier now lay discarded on the floor. The sheets covered part of her body, but not enough to hide what had just happened. For several seconds, no one moved. No one spoke. Luna stood frozen in the doorway. Her heart stopped beating. Her mind went blank. As if her brain refused to process what she was seeing. Then Elena turned her head. Their eyes met. And the expression on Elena’s face changed. Not guilt. Not panic. But… manufactured surprise. “Luna?” Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. Ethan turned his head immediately. When he saw Luna standing at the door, one of his eyebrows lifted slightly. But what hurt Luna the most was not what she saw. It was what she didn’t see. There was no guilt on Ethan’s face. No regret. No panic. Only mild discomfort… at being caught. As if Luna had merely interrupted something. “Luna,” Ethan said flatly. As though greeting a casual acquaintance. Not his own fiancée. That voice finally shattered the suffocating silence. “What… is this?” Luna’s voice was barely audible. Her hand trembled on the door handle. Elena suddenly pulled the sheet higher over her body, her face turning pale. “Luna, this isn’t what you think—” “Not what I think?” Luna let out a small laugh. A laugh that sounded more like something breaking. Her eyes swept across the room again. Elena’s dress on the floor. Ethan’s shirt lying on the chair. The rumpled bed. What else was there to think? Ethan exhaled slowly, as if the situation were merely inconvenient. “It seems you already know the answer.” The words felt like a knife driven straight into Luna’s chest. “Elena is my best friend,” Luna whispered. Elena lowered her head. “I… I didn’t mean to—” But Ethan suddenly cut her off. “Stop pretending.” Elena fell silent. So did Luna. Ethan sat up straighter on the bed, his gaze now cold. “Sooner or later you would have found out anyway.” Luna stared at him in disbelief. “So… this has been going on for a long time?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. But the silence was answer enough. Luna felt something inside her slowly breaking apart. “Since when?” Her voice was almost inaudible. Ethan finally replied casually, “A few months.” A few months. Which meant… for months, Ethan had been cheating with her own best friend. While Luna had continued planning their future together. Her eyes slowly shifted to Elena. “Elena…” Her best friend finally began to cry. Tears streamed down her face. “Luna, I’m sorry… I couldn’t control my feelings…” But before Luna could say anything, Ethan spoke again. And his words were far crueler. “Don’t blame Elena.” Luna turned her head slowly. Ethan looked at her coldly. “If you want to blame someone…” he paused for a moment. His gaze swept over Luna from head to toe. “…maybe you should blame yourself.” Time seemed to stop. “What do you mean?” Ethan let out a small laugh. “You really don’t understand?” He got out of bed, casually picking up his shirt. “Luna, you’re a good girl. You’re diligent. You’re loyal.” He slowly put the shirt on. “But you’re also boring.” The words felt like a slap. “Elena is different.” Ethan glanced at the woman on the bed. “She knows how to be a real woman.” Luna stared at him, her eyes beginning to fill with tears. But Ethan wasn’t finished. “Besides,” he said coldly, “you should have known from the beginning.” Luna frowned. “Known what?” Ethan gave a faint smile. “Someone like you…” He paused before continuing, “…was never truly suited for the Hale family.” Those words hurt more than the betrayal itself. And before Luna could say anything… Ethan added casually, “So actually, you arrived right on time.” Luna stared at him blankly. “Right on time for what?” Ethan looked straight into her eyes. And said without the slightest hint of guilt, “I was planning to end our engagement tonight anyway.”
