(Juliana's POV)
The air was colder tonight, sharp against my skin as I stepped out into the quiet. The weight in my chest was heavier now, an unbearable pressure I couldn't shake no matter how far I walked or how much I tried to ignore it.
The stars above looked indifferent, their distant light offering no comfort.
I needed space.
My steps carried me to the edge of the training grounds, past the boundaries of the estate where the forest loomed dark and uninviting. My hand brushed against the mark on my shoulder, an action I didn't even realize I was doing until I felt the heat radiating from it.
It was burning again.
That same unfamiliar warmth, simmering just below the surface of my skin, threatening to boil over.
"Not now," I whispered, my voice trembling.
I clenched my fists, trying to will the sensation away. But it was growing stronger, spreading through my veins like wildfire, seeping into every part of me.
The bond.
The power.
Everything felt like it was spiraling out of my control.
The trees whispered around me, their branches swaying gently in the wind. I leaned against a tall oak, closing my eyes and taking a shaky breath.
"Get a grip, Juliana," I muttered under my breath.
But no matter how hard I tried to steady myself, the pressure inside me only grew. It was like a storm, swirling and raging, demanding to be unleashed.
My breathing quickened as panic set in.
I couldn't let it happen. Not here. Not now.
A rustling sound came from behind me, and my eyes snapped open. My senses sharpened instantly, my instincts kicking in as I turned toward the noise.
"Who's there?" I called, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.
The forest was silent again, as if holding its breath.
I stepped forward cautiously, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. My hand went to the dagger at my side, the familiar weight of the blade grounding me.
Another sound—a low growl, deep and guttural.
I froze, my grip tightening on the dagger's hilt.
The growl came again, closer this time. My eyes darted toward the source, and my heart raced as a pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared in the darkness.
Rogues.
Of course.
The wolf stepped into the faint moonlight, its black fur bristling as it bared its teeth.
I didn't hesitate.
The blade was in my hand before I even realized I'd drawn it, the familiar stance of a warrior taking over. My feet moved instinctively, positioning myself for the inevitable attack.
The rogue lunged, its movements fast but predictable. I sidestepped easily, bringing the blade down in a clean arc.
Blood splattered across the forest floor as the wolf collapsed, its snarls fading into silence.
But there wasn't time to rest.
More growls echoed around me, the sound coming from every direction.
I spun, my dagger glinting in the pale light as the wolves began to emerge.
One, two... six.
I swallowed hard, my pulse pounding in my ears.
I could take them. I had to.
The first wolf lunged, and I met it with a strike to its throat, the blade sinking deep before I pulled it free.
The second came from the left, its jaws snapping inches from my arm before I drove my elbow into its ribs, sending it sprawling.
But the others were relentless.
I fought hard, every movement precise and calculated, but the wolves were faster than I anticipated, their coordination unnerving.
A claw raked across my side, and I hissed in pain, stumbling slightly as warm blood seeped through my shirt.
I tightened my grip on the dagger, my knuckles white.
"Come on," I muttered, glaring at the remaining wolves.
The power inside me stirred again, that unbearable heat threatening to consume me.
No. Not now.
I couldn't let it take over.
But as the wolves closed in, their growls deafening, I realized I might not have a choice.
----
(Juliana's POV)
The wolves circled me, their growls reverberating in the cold night air. My breath came in sharp bursts, every inhale laced with the metallic tang of blood. My own blood.
I tightened my grip on the dagger, ignoring the searing pain radiating from my side. The world around me felt smaller, the edges blurring as the wolves moved closer, their glowing eyes locked on me.
The heat inside me burned hotter, licking at the edges of my control.
I couldn't hold it back much longer.
The first wolf lunged, its teeth bared and claws outstretched. I moved on instinct, my blade slicing through the air as I sidestepped, driving the dagger into its side.
It yelped, collapsing in a heap, but there was no time to pause. Another wolf was on me, its massive weight slamming into my shoulder and knocking me to the ground.
The impact forced the air from my lungs, and the dagger slipped from my grasp, clattering against the rocky forest floor.
No.
I struggled beneath the wolf's weight, its rancid breath hot against my face as it snarled. My hand scrambled for the blade, my fingers brushing the hilt just as the wolf lunged for my throat.
Time seemed to slow.
The heat inside me erupted, a searing wave of energy that exploded outward.
The wolf was thrown off me, its body slamming into a tree with a sickening crunch.
I froze, my chest heaving as I stared at my trembling hands. The heat coursed through me, wild and uncontained, filling every inch of my body with a power I didn't understand.
The remaining wolves hesitated, their glowing eyes flickering with unease.
They could feel it, too.
I stood slowly, the dagger forgotten at my feet. My vision blurred at the edges, the world around me a haze of shadows and light.
The power inside me surged again, and I clenched my fists, fighting to keep it contained. But it was like trying to hold back a tidal wave—impossible, overwhelming.
The wolves charged as one, their growls echoing in my ears.
And then, everything went dark.
(Alpha King's POV)
The pull of the bond was undeniable.
It dragged at him, sharp and relentless, tugging him toward the forest with an urgency he couldn't ignore.
He moved quickly, his steps silent against the forest floor. The night was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of the wild replaced by an oppressive stillness that set his nerves on edge.
And then he felt it.
A wave of power rippling through the air, hot and untamed, like a wildfire consuming everything in its path.
His chest tightened, his pace quickening as he followed the bond's pull.
When he reached the clearing, the sight before him made his breath catch.
She stood at the center, her figure bathed in an otherworldly glow. The wolves lay scattered around her, their bodies limp and lifeless. The air crackled with energy, the ground beneath her feet scorched and smoking.
Her eyes—those deep, dark eyes—glowed with an intensity that sent a shiver down his spine.
"Juliana," he called softly, his voice steady despite the storm of emotions churning inside him.
She didn't respond.
Her gaze was distant, unfocused, as if she were somewhere far away.
"Juliana," he said again, stepping closer.
The energy around her shifted, the heat pressing against him like a living thing. It wasn't just power—it was chaos.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice firm.
Her eyes snapped to his, and for a moment, he saw something he hadn't expected.
Fear.
"Help me," she whispered, her voice trembling.
And then she collapsed.
(Juliana's POV)
The world came rushing back in fragments—the sound of my ragged breathing, the cold ground against my skin, the faint scent of pine and smoke.
I blinked, my vision swimming as I tried to make sense of where I was.
"You're safe," a voice said, deep and calm.
I turned my head slowly, my eyes meeting his.
The Alpha King knelt beside me, his expression unreadable but his crimson eyes watching me intently.
"What... what happened?" I asked, my voice hoarse.
"You lost control," he said simply.
The weight of his words settled over me, and I closed my eyes, the memory of the power surging through me replaying in my mind.
"I didn't mean to," I whispered.
"I know," he said. "But this is why we need to figure out what's happening to you."
I opened my eyes, meeting his gaze.
"I don't know if I can," I admitted, my voice barely audible.
"You don't have a choice," he said, his tone firm but not unkind. "This power—it's a part of you now. And if you don't learn to control it, it will destroy you."
His words sent a chill through me, but there was no denying the truth in them.
I had felt it—the chaos, the fire, the storm inside me.
And for the first time, I was truly afraid of myself.
(Alpha King's POV)
He watched her carefully, the vulnerability in her eyes striking a chord deep within him.
She was stronger than she realized, but the road ahead would test her in ways neither of them could predict.
"We'll figure this out," he said quietly, his voice steady.
Her gaze met his, and for a moment, the bond between them seemed to hum with a quiet understanding.
"I'll help you," he said, his tone softening. "But you have to trust me."
She hesitated, the conflict in her eyes clear.
But then she nodded, a small, tentative motion that sent a wave of relief through him.
"Okay," she said, her voice trembling but resolute.
It was a start.
And for now, that was enough.
