King fell asleep feeling very satisfied. It was a great night, after all. How could he have ever imagined that everything would turn out the way that it did?
It all started with disappointment. His plane had landed in a strange location and he was in a hurry to get to his destination. Little did he know what fate had in store for him. If he did, he'd have begged for it himself.
He opened his eyes, feeling a bit tired from the ordeal and sat up quickly. Then he raised both hands and stretched as much as he could, yawning as he did. He felt a tear roll down his cheek. It was a well-deserved stretch.
He turned around, looking to see if Victoria was beside him. Although his vision was still a bit hazy, it was clear that she wasn't there. She had already gone and it displeased him. He wanted to talk to her; to know why she left him that way. It was something that he felt he deserved; a due that she had to pay to him.
As his vision got clearer he noticed that there were legs around him and he looked up to see who it was. His friends were round about him; all four of them, and they were all gaping at him looking clueless.
They had been standing there for about five minutes and King had no idea. They waited for him to return to them after they saw him run after Victoria but he didn't. They waited all night, yet he didn't show up.
It got them worried. They had thought about going out that night to search for him but they thought against it, seeing that it was dark already and they could even barely see anything due to the weather. Instead, they all decided that it was better to go look for him in the morning after the snowstorm must have subsided.
When they did, they were met with a huge surprise. They found King lying down in a nearby desolated building, half-naked!
The amusement they felt could not be contained as they all put their hands over their mouths and laughed so hard while he simply watched on in embarrassment.
"The all-righteous and always serious King did have a wild night, didn't he?" One of them asked, slapping another on the wrist as they did a chicken dance.
"I never knew he could be so naughty, you know," another echoed as they gave themselves a high-five.
They laughed, teased and taunted King so much, mostly because it was something they never expected, especially in such an area. They couldn't have imagined that he'd fail to come back that night because of a woman. It was a hilarious moment for them.
King didn't say a word. There was nothing for him to say. He simply put on his clothes and stood to his feet and they all walked back to the airport.
As they got to the airport, King's friends kept on pestering him.
"You should tell us what happened last night."
"Come on, King. Why won't you open up? We're friends aren't we?"
"Okay. Okay. It's alright," King finally conceded. "The lady you saw me run after is my ex-girlfriend. I have a history with her; one that I barely love to remember or talk about."
"That's where I come in," said one of the men, as he cleared his throat. Everyone else turned their attention to him, keen to hear what he had to say. "I'm sure you'd all love to know what happened, wouldn't you?"
The rest nodded and he smiled. "Back then when King was still in college, he was very poor. Everyone in school knew just how wretched King was," he explained, emphasizing King's financial state just to rub it on his face. The others noticed and they chuckled a bit.
"He was smart though. He is one of those guys that always have very good grades even without stressing about it at all. Because of that, he received a scholarship and that was how he was able to go through school…"
"Rowland, how does that relate to what we've been talking about?" One of the guys asked, beginning to get bored with the whole information. He needed Rowland to go straight to the point.
"Patience, my friend. Patience. One day, when King was at the diner, not so far from his dormitory, he saw a lady walk past him and he froze."
"King never freezes."
"That's where you're wrong, pal. He froze," Rowland reiterated. "It was love at first sight. He approached the lady and they began to talk. Luckily for him, she loved him too and they soon became a couple. That lady was Victoria."
Rowland turned to look at King, whose head was already bowed as he sought to know if he could continue. He didn't know how King would feel and so he was very keen on knowing exactly what he thought about it.
King nodded and Rowland went on. "Their love was the talk of the town and everyone envied them. Me too; ass did all of his friends at the time. It was something that we all wished we could have but unfortunately, we couldn't."
"So why aren't they together anymore?"
"Why are you always in a hurry?" Rowland asked, baring his palms. "Well, King was attacked by a few men who threatened to kill him if he didn't leave Victoria. They beat him so hard that he had to be sent to the hospital. Instead of giving him some support and care, she broke up with him instead and never returned. She abandoned him when he needed her the most. It's something that had stayed with him all this while. That's it."
The guys lowered their heads in sadness, having no idea what to say to him. King had never shared that story with any of them and they felt like horrible friends for making jokes about all of that. Then a man came jogging toward them.
