Pick Up

A soft voice enters a private mindlink with me. “Malikai, can I get an update hun,” Lorena asked with worry laced in her thoughts. “I can sense something is not right.” The level of unrest wasn’t what she and I were expecting when we set out. Her wolf Sofie could sense the warriors’ reactions and their emotional state. In rare cases, the Luna and Alfa can sense the overall state of their packs or specific groups, such as in this case. This sense is created by close bonds with the pack members, it's not too dissimilar to the mate bond. Just not nearly as strong. All Alfas and Lunas can mindlink with the entire pack or individual members, one can think of it as a telepathic P.A. System or telephone. This connection can help to guide the flow of emotions of the pack to its leaders and vise versa. Usually it's just a flow from the leaders to the pack but trained leaders can let the flow channel back to them.  "Are you ready my dear… just want to warn you. It’s a lot to take in and some of it's difficult to process,” I replied. I used our mate bond to share my memories with her. I can feel her emotions shift as she gets the speed up version.  As the memories finished I switched to share what I was currently seeing. This act takes a lot of practice to be perfected. I looked around with shared vision. The burning buildings, bodies of rogues and Crescent Cliff pack members scattering the ground, and then to miss Evelyn Rose. Tears streamed down my face, they were Lorena’s tears. I could feel her heart break and then a flood of resolve. “I am on my way with relief, fire trucks, and pick up,” she stated. There was no point in fighting her. She is a Luna and this is her pack. She cares for each and every pack member deeply. The pack knows this very well. Their loyalty to her rivals their loyalty for me. That is how it should and always be. “We will be here. Please be careful,” I replied. “We are lucky to have her as our Luna and mate,” Eli spoke. Ever thankful to the Moongoddess for blessing us with Lorena and Sofie. “They truly are our other halves. They complete us and make us better,” I added. “Any news on the surrounding areas?” I asked my warriors through mindlink. “Nothing new,” Luke replied followed by confirmation from the other warriors. “All right everyone, regroup here. Relief is on its way and we are getting picked up. Stay close to each other. This rain isn’t letting up and we need to stay alert,” I commanded.  Everyone came running and huddled together while staying alert. The flames of the burning building around us helped stave off the cold. I curled around Evelyn to help keep her warm with my thick brown fur. Luke saw and curled around the other side of her. He is going to be a very compassionate Beta to my son. Josh posted himself to shield her, Luke, and I from the rain as much as he could. He looked down at Evelyn’s face with concern in his eyes.  Not long the rumble of vehicles and flashing of lights sparked in the distance, getting closer and closer. Three large buses, three fire engines, and a black SUV rolled into view. The fire engines and crew engaged the fires and the buses stopped close by to the group. Pack members unloaded from the buses and began to pass out towels, sweat pants, sweat shirts, rain coats and umbrellas. They comforted the warriors who displayed the psychological strain. Mehgana and Lorena worked to dry off and dress the unconscious Evelyn. I held the umbrella over them trying to shield them as much as possible. Josh and Luke stayed close as they dried off and dressed. Travis was already directing warriors onto the buses and doing a headcount. Lorena went to pick up Evelyn but before she could lift her Josh and Luke were both there. Josh scoops her in his arms and Luke covers her in his raincoat to keep her from getting her fresh close wet. The looks of surprise graced our faces. Mehgana, Lorena, and I looked at the two boys who reflected concern and alternes. They realized we were staring at them. “We should get going.” Luke stated as he turned a bright red. He looked to Josh and nodded as he headed to help his father load the buses. Mehgana excused herself and ran up to her mate Thomson. We headed to the black SUV. Evelyn hoping in the back and motioned for Josh to pass Evelyn to her. He seemed almost reluctant to pass Evelyn to her but that passed quickly. He then sat in the front Passenger seat next to me.  “The fires are out. Everyone is accounted for and loaded up,” Travis mindlinked me.  “Alright everyone let us go home,” I replied as I turned the headlights on. The pack headed home.  As we drove I noticed Josh’s eyes would dart to the rear view mirror to look at the two in the back. His eyes would cloud over once in a while, he and his wolf talk were talking to one another. About what I have not a single clue.
