Chapter 6: Scars and Confessions "I would burn this entire city to ash before I let them lay a single finger on you. You belong tome, Elena." Chapter 6: Scars and Confessions The residual heat of the medical bay seemed to cling to Elena’s skin long after they left thesubterranean level, following her back up through the quiet corridors of the mansion. The wordsshe had spoken to Dante—and the absolute certainty with which she had meant them—echoedsoftly in her mind. She wasn’t running anymore. Stepping into the heart of the Rebel King'sworld had fundamentally altered her, bridging the gap between her old, predictable life as amedical student and the dark, volatile reality she now inhabited. Yet, safety within a fortress like Dante’s was always a fragile illusion. Later that evening, the heavy oak doors of the master guest suite remained closed, but thestillness of the room was broken by a soft, hesitant knock. Elena, who had been sitting by thewindow watching the armed guards patrol the wet courtyard below, turned quickly. "Come in," she called out, adjusting the collar of her sweater. The door clicked open to reveal Marcus. His usual stoic expression was laced with a strangemixture of tension and hesitation. He stepped just inside the threshold, holding a sleek, securetablet under one arm. "Dr. Vance," Marcus began, his voice lowered professionally. "I apologize for disturbing you atthis hour. The Boss is currently locked in a secure conference with the regional captains, reviewing the fallout from the Vanguard's failed poisoning attempt. But before he went intolockdown, he gave me specific instructions." Elena raised a brow, crossing her arms over her chest. "And what instructions would that be,Marcus? Am I being placed under heavier guard, or is there another synthetic crisis down in thelab?"A rare, fleeting ghost of a smile touched the corner of Marcus’s mouth before his professionalmask slid back into place. "Neither. Dante wants you to have access to the east wing library. Andmore importantly... he asked me to bring you this." Marcus extended the tablet, tapping the screen to bring up a digital file. Elena stepped forward, her eyes scanning the document displayed on the glass. As she read, her breath caught in herthroat. It was her own university academic record, her research papers on advancedpharmacology, and—most shockingly—her mother’s old medical journals from twenty years ago, digitized and annotated with margin notes in a handwriting she hadn't seen since childhood. "Where did you... how did you get this?" Elena whispered, her fingers trembling slightly as shetouched the glass screen. "When Dante brings someone into his ledger, he doesn’t just look at who they are today; he looksat everything that made them," Marcus explained quietly. "Your mother was Dr. Katherine Vance, wasn't she? The brilliant pharmacologist who mysteriously lost her research lab and fundingback when you were a teenager, right before the Vanguard corporate buyout took over the city'smedical sector." Elena’s head snapped up, her hazel eyes wide with shock. "The university always said her lab lostfunding due to administrative cuts. They claimed her research was unviable." "Administrators lie when men with guns and corporate bonds tell them to," Marcus repliedgrimly. "The Vanguard syndicate has been systematically buying, burying, or stealingbreakthrough biochemical research for over a decade. The neuro-toxin they used on Danteyesterday? Your mother laid down the foundational chemical blueprint for its counter-compoundfifteen years ago in her unpublished papers. That’s why your brain went straight to the correctformula in the lab. It’s in your blood, Dr. Vance." The room seemed to spin around Elena. The pieces of a puzzle she hadn't even known she wastrying to solve suddenly slammed together with terrifying clarity. Her mother’s sudden downfall, her own lifelong pursuit of medicine, and the exact reason why she had instinctively known howto save Dante’s life—it was all connected to the very war Dante was fighting against theVanguard. Before Marcus could elaborate further, a low, ominous chime echoed from his tactical comm-piece clipped to his vest. He tapped it instantly, listening to a burst of compressed static and asharp voice barking instructions from the security grid.Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. He turned toward the door. "We have a breach on thesouthern perimeter. Stay in this room, Dr. Vance. Lock the door behind me." Before Elena could utter a single word of protest, Marcus pivoted and rushed out down thehallway, the heavy door clicking shut in his wake. Heart hammering against her ribs, Elena didn't stay by the door. She walked quickly to thewindow, parting the velvet drapes. Below, in the courtyard, the floodlights suddenly flared to life, casting blinding white beams across the rain-slicked cobblestones. Shouts echoed from the guardtowers, followed by the unmistakable, chilling sound of a silenced firearm spitting lead into thenight air. The war had followed her here. The Vanguard hadn't retreated after the poisoning; they hadtracked her bloodline, and they were coming to finish what they started. Driven by a surge of adrenaline that completely overrode her fear, Elena unlocked the guest suitedoor and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway. The mansion was alive with silent, lethal motion—enforcers in tactical gear moving with military precision toward the central stairwell, theirboots thudding against the Persian rugs. She didn't head down toward the chaos. Instead, she remembered what Marcus had said aboutDante being in the east wing command center. Navigating the unfamiliar corridors, she slippedpast a set of double mahogany doors left ajar, leading into the estate’s private archival library. The room was vast, lined with towering floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a massive stone fireplace, and a heavy oak desk lit by a single green-shaded banker’s lamp. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the southern gardens was Dante. He had already dressed for the crisis. He wore a heavy black tactical vest over a dark charcoalshirt, a heavy combat knife sheathed at his hip, and an automatic pistol gripped firmly in hisright hand. The raw, imposing aura of the Rebel King filled the room, casting an intimidatingshadow across the polished wooden floorboards. As the sound of soft footsteps echoed against the floor, Dante didn't turn around immediately, buthis muscles coiled like a spring. "I told Marcus to keep you locked in the guest suite," Dante said, his voice a low, dangerousrumble that cut through the distant sounds of gunfire outside. "I don't take orders well, in case you haven't noticed," Elena answered, stepping further into thelibrary, her voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears. Dante slowly turned his head, his striking blue eyes locking onto hers. The harsh light from thewindow caught the sharp angles of his face, revealing the faint, pale scar along his jawline andthe intense, possessive heat burning in his gaze. He took two long strides toward her, closing thedistance instantly, his free hand reaching out to catch her by the waist, pulling her flush againsthis solid frame. "This isn't a game, Elena," Dante murmured, his voice dropping an octave as his thumb brushedagainst her hip. "The Vanguard breached the outer wall because they know who you are. Theyknow your mother's research is the key to neutralizing their entire chemical arsenal. You aretheir primary target tonight." "And you're fighting them with a body that was poisoned less than twenty hours ago," Elenacountered fiercely, her hands resting flat against his tactical vest, feeling the hard, unyieldingmuscle beneath. She looked up into his eyes, refusing to flinch. "Marcus told me about mymother's papers. He told me why the Vanguard wants her research buried. They didn't just attackme by accident in the railway yard, did they? They’ve been hunting my family for years." Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He looked down at her, a fierce, protective storm raging in his eyes. "No, they didn't," Dante admitted, his voice raw and absolute. "The moment I found out whosedaughter you were, I knew the risks of bringing you here. But I would burn this entire city to ashbefore I let them lay a single finger on you. You belong to me, Elena. Not to the Vanguard, not tothe past. To me." Before Elena could process the breathtaking, terrifying weight of his confession, the heavy oakdoors of the library slammed open with a deafening crash. Marcus burst into the room, his tactical vest smoking from a close-range discharge, blooddripping from a shallow graze on his forearm. "Boss! They bypassed the southern gate using a localized EMP," Marcus yelled, raising his rifle ashe scanned the perimeter of the library. "An elite hit squad is inside the mansion. They’reheading straight for this wing. We have to move—now!"Dante didn't panic. His grip on Elena’s waist tightened into an unyielding iron band, his blue eyesflashing with cold, lethal fury. He lowered his pistol, c*****g the slide with a sharp metallic snap, before looking down at Elena with a look so intense it stole the breath right out of her lungs. "Stay behind me, princess," Dante commanded, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Let'sshow these bastards what happens when they hunt on the Rebel King's ground." To be continued in Chapter 7...
