Chapter 10: Shadows on the Platform "They brought an army... Let's show them how we bury kings." — Dante Chapter 10: Shadows on the Platform The armored transport vehicle rumbled through the rain-slicked concrete tunnels beneath thedowntown municipal transit hub, its bulletproof tires hissing against the damp asphalt. Insidethe reinforced cabin, the air was heavy with anticipation, charged with the quiet, deadly energyof a syndicate at war. Dante sat beside Elena in the dim illumination of the dashboard lights, his broad frame a wall ofunyielding muscle and tactical carbon-fiber. His gaze remained fixed on the tactical displayscreen mounted on the center console, tracking the live telemetry feed that Marcus was routingfrom a remote relay. The municipal hub above them was massive—a labyrinth of undergroundrail lines, dark maintenance corridors, and rusted steel service elevators that connected the city’stransit arteries to the black-market underworld. Elena clutched the edge of the leather seat, her knuckles turning slightly pale. The ballistic vestfelt heavy against her chest, but her breathing was measured and calm. She looked sideways atDante, watching the sharp, unforgiving line of his jaw and the cold determination burning in hisstriking blue eyes. The advice she had taken to heart earlier—that she was no longer just a victimwaiting to be rescued, but a partner standing on the front lines—pulsed through her veins withelectric clarity. "We're fifty meters from the maintenance sector bulkhead," Marcus's voice echoed through theencrypted comms channel from the lead vehicle. "Thermal scans show minimal movement in theprimary passenger concourse, but the subterranean service level is crawling with encryptedcomm-tags. They're waiting for us." Dante reached out, his gloved hand sliding over Elena’s knuckles, wrapping her tremblinghesitation into absolute, immovable strength. His thumb brushed softly against her skin—atender gesture entirely at odds with the weapon strapped to his thigh."Stay behind me when the doors open, princess," Dante instructed, his voice dropping into a low, husky growl that commanded complete obedience. "The moment we step out, they’re going to tryto flush us into the crossfire. Do not let go of my hand." "I'm right with you," Elena answered steadily, her hazel eyes locking onto his with unwaveringtrust. With a heavy pneumatic hiss, the armored transport slid to a halt inside the shadows of Sector 9maintenance bay. The engine died, leaving behind only the distant, eerie hum of industrialgenerators and the steady drip of water echoing through the concrete caverns. Dante didn't hesitate. He slammed his door open, stepping out into the cold, damp air with hisautomatic pistol raised and ready. In one fluid movement, he reached back, pulling Elena outbehind him and sheltering her slender frame against his broad side before sweeping his weaponacross the darkened platform. Nothing stirred in the immediate vicinity except for a few flickering overhead fluorescent lightsthat buzzed with an irritating, rhythmic whine. Rows of decommissioned subway cars lined thetracks to their left, casting long, skeletal shadows across the gravel bed. "Sector clear on the western approach," Marcus reported, stepping out of the lead vehicle withhis rifle leveled at the dark service stairwell ahead. "The unlisted terminal is through thatmaintenance door at the end of the platform. That's where the signal originated." Dante nodded sharply, pulling Elena slightly closer as they began to advance down the platform.Every boot step crunched quietly against the loose gravel, the sound magnified a hundred timesin the cavernous silence. Suddenly, the hair on the back of Elena’s neck stood up. A strange, metallic scent drifted throughthe damp air—not rust or rain, but the sharp, unmistakable tang of fresh cordite. "Dante..." Elena whispered, her fingers tightening urgently around his sleeve. Before Dante could even pivot, the overhead fluorescent lights shattered in a simultaneous burstof sparks and glass. Total, suffocating darkness crashed down upon them, instantly swallowed bythe ear-splitting roar of automatic gunfire erupting from the top of the decommissioned subwaycars above. "Ambush!" Marcus shouted over the deafening clatter of rounds ricocheting off the concretewalls.Dante shoved Elena violently behind the thick steel frame of a structural support column, hisown body forming a living shield over hers as a hail of high-caliber bullets chewed into theconcrete inches from their heads. Blood sprayed across the platform from a graze on Marcus'sshoulder, but the veteran operative returned fire with cold, calculated precision, muzzle flasheslighting up the pitch-black tunnel like jagged bolts of lightning. Amidst the chaos of screaming metal and flying lead, a cold, amplified voice boomed from theshadows of the upper gantry, echoing mockingly through the subterranean station: *"Welcome to your grave, Rebel King. Did you really think the Vanguard would let you walk awaywith the Syndicate's future?"* Dante’s eyes narrowed into absolute, terrifying slits in the dark. He slowly lowered his pistol, reaching down to unclip a heavy, tactical perimeter charge from his belt, a lethal smirk formingon his lips. "They brought an army," Dante whispered darkly into the dark, his gaze locking onto theshadows above as he armed the trigger. "Let's show them how we bury kings." Suddenly, the heavy steel access door behind them clicked open with a loud, mechanical chime, and a glowing red laser sight swept directly across the back of Elena's neck.
