"Nobody takes what belongs to the Rebel King—and nobody walks away from my claim."
Chapter 4: Whispers in the Dark
The warmth of the grand foyer hit Elena like a gentle wave, sharply contrasting with the bone-chilling cold of the midnight storm raging outside. As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behindthem, sealing out the howling wind, the oppressive weight of the sprawling mansion seemed toclose in from all directions.
Mrs. Gable wasted no time. Her experienced eyes darted from Dante’s blood-soaked jacket to thepale, fragile posture of the young woman standing beside him. Without a word of unnecessarypanic, the older woman stepped forward, her hands gently taking Elena's ice-cold fingers.
"Come with me, my dear," Mrs. Gable said softly, her voice carrying a maternal warmth thatinstantly eased a fraction of the raw panic clawing at Elena's chest. "You are safe inside thesewalls. Let me get you out of those damp clothes, and we’ll get you settled into a warm room."
Elena hesitated, her hazel eyes darting sideways toward Dante. Even with blood loss draining hiscolor, his presence dominated the entire room. He was standing rigidly near the base of thegrand mahogany staircase, watching her with an intense, unblinking gaze that felt like a physicaltouch.
"Go with her, Elena," Dante instructed, his voice a low, gravelly command that brooked noargument. "Mrs. Gable will take care of you. Once I'm cleaned up, I'll come check on you."
Before Elena could form a reply or protest being ushered away, Dante turned sharply and strodedown the dimly lit corridor toward his private study, accompanied by Marcus, who was alreadybriefing him on security updates.
Left with little choice, Elena allowed Mrs. Gable to guide her up the sweeping staircase. Thesecond-floor hallway was lined with dark wood panelling, antique oil paintings, and heavy velvetdrapes that muffled the sound of the rain. They walked down the corridor until Mrs. Gableunlocked a heavy paneled door, revealing a breathtaking master guest suite. The room wasspacious and elegantly decorated in deep mahogany and charcoal tones, featuring a massivefour-poster bed draped in rich crimson sheets and a crackling stone fireplace that cast acomforting, golden glow across the floor.
"There are fresh towels and a hot bath already drawn in the adjoining bathroom," Mrs. Gableexplained gently, setting a fresh set of comfortable loungewear on the edge of the bed. "Take yourtime, child. Nothing bad is going to happen to you here. The Rebel King keeps his promises, and ifhe brought you through those gates, you belong to his protection now."
Elena offered a weak, trembling nod. "Thank you, Mrs. Gable."
As the older woman quietly slipped out of the room, leaving her alone in the cavernous silence,Elena let out a long, shuddering breath. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, partingthe velvet curtains just an inch to look out into the courtyard. Below, the dark silhouettes ofarmed guards patrolled the perimeter, their flashlights cutting through the driving rain.
She wasn't just a medical student anymore. She was a ghost to her old life, locked inside a mafiafortress by a dangerous, magnetic stranger who claimed she belonged to him.
Meanwhile, down the hall in his private study, Dante sat behind a massive mahogany desk whileMarcus stood across from it, watching anxiously as a club medic carefully stitched the deep knifewound in Dante's side. Dante didn't flinch as the needle pierced his flesh; his mind was entirelyoccupied by a different kind of burn.
"The Vanguard syndicate has gone quiet," Marcus reported, folding his arms across his leathervest. "They know you made it back to the estate. But Boss, bringing an ordinary civilian into thestronghold—especially a medical student who witnessed an active hit—is going to complicatethings. Are you sure about this?"
Dante's icy blue eyes narrowed as he looked up, the harsh light of the desk lamp catching thesharp, unforgiving angles of his face. "Do I look like I make mistakes, Marcus?"
"No, Boss," Marcus replied, lowering his gaze respectfully. "Just checking your flank."
"Focus on tracking down the Vanguard insider who leaked my route," Dante commanded coldly, waving the medic away once the bandages were secured. He stood up, testing his core with aslight wince before grabbing a fresh black shirt and pulling it on. "And double the perimeterguards. Nobody enters or leaves this estate without my direct authorization."
Marcus nodded and briskly left the study, closing the heavy oak door behind him. Once he was alone, Dante walked out of the study and padded silently down the carpetedhallway toward the master guest suite. His footsteps were light, almost predatory, fueled by anundeniable magnetic pull drawing him toward the second-floor rooms.
He didn't knock. Instead, he quietly pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The bathroom door was ajar, and soft, rhythmic sounds of splashing water echoed against themarble walls. A delicate mist drifted out into the bedroom, carrying the sweet, subtle fragranceof lavender soap mixed with rain.
Elena was sitting on the edge of the plush armchair by the fireplace, her hair wrapped loosely ina fluffy white towel while she wore a soft, oversized cashmere sweater provided by Mrs. Gable. She was staring blankly into the crackling flames, lost in a heavy maze of anxious thoughts, whena sudden floorboard creaked softly near the entrance.
Her head snapped up, her breath hitching in her throat as she saw Dante standing silhouetteagainst the doorway.
He had changed into a clean dark shirt and trousers, his damp dark hair falling slightly across hisforehead, casting deep shadows over his striking eyes. The raw danger he radiated wasimpossible to ignore, yet there was a careful, deliberate slowness to his movements as he walkedfurther into the room.
"Dante," Elena breathed out, her voice barely louder than a whisper as she stood up instinctivelyfrom the chair, her hands gripping the hem of her oversized sweater. "You... you shouldn't bewalking around. Your wound—"
"My wound is irrelevant," Dante interrupted, his voice dropping an octave as he closed thedistance between them, stopping just a few feet away. Up close, the sheer physical presence ofhim made the room feel suddenly smaller, the air thick and electric. "I told you I would comecheck on you. I don't break my word."
Elena swallowed hard, her hazel eyes locked onto his. "Why am I here, Dante? Really. You couldhave dropped me off anywhere safe in the city. A hospital, a police station, a subway stop. Whybring me into the heart of a mafia war?"
Dante’s gaze darkened, a fierce intensity flashing behind his striking blue eyes. He took anotherstep forward, closing the remaining space until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. He reached out slowly, his large, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of her face, his thumbsoftly tracing her jawline. Elena’s breath hitched, her body locking up under the sheer intensity of his touch. Every rationalthought in her mind scattered like dust in the wind.
"Because the moment you pulled that blade out of my flesh, you signed your name in my ledger, princess," Dante murmured, his voice husky, intimate, and absolute. "The Vanguard saw yourface. If I let you go back to the city tonight, they would have flayed you alive just to find outwhere I bleed. You are safer here, inside my fortress, right beside me, than anywhere else onearth."
"And if I don't want to stay?" Elena challenged softly, though her voice lacked any real conviction, her trembling hands resting lightly against his chest. "What if I want my old life back?"
A dangerous, low chuckle vibrated in Dante’s chest. He leaned down slightly, his lips hoveringjust centimeters from her ear, sending a delicious, terrifying shiver cascading down her spine.
"You can try to run, Elena," Dante whispered against her skin, his grip tightening just enough topull her flush against his solid frame. "You can try to lock yourself away in your tiny apartment. But I promise you, wherever you go, I will find you. Nobody takes what belongs to the Rebel King—and nobody walks away from my claim."
Before Elena could process the breathtaking, terrifying weight of his declaration, Dante loweredhis head, pressing a lingering, possessive kiss to the sensitive skin just below her ear. The jolt ofelectricity that raced through her veins wiped away every lingering doubt.
In that quiet, candlelit room, surrounded by enemies and wrapped in the arms of a dangerousmafia king, Elena knew the truth: she was no longer running from the fire. She had walkedstraight into its heart, and she never wanted to leave.
