"I don't play to survive... I play to annihilate." — Dante
Chapter 12: Blood and Betrayal
The thick, white billows of smoke drifted slowly across the cold concrete floor of thesubterranean corridor, parting to reveal the tall, imposing figure standing in the shattereddoorway. The tactical visor hissed as it retracted upward, exposing a sharp, aristocratic jawline, cold grey eyes identical to Dante’s own, and a twisted, mocking smile that cut straight throughthe tense silence.
"Hello, brother," Julian Vance murmured, his voice dripping with smooth, venomous malice as hestepped further into the room, his high-ranking Vanguard uniform immaculate despite thesurrounding chaos.
Dante froze. The air in the narrow corridor seemed to drop to absolute zero, the fierce, protectivewarmth that had moments ago defined his embrace with Elena instantly crystallizing into alethal, terrifying fury. His grip on his automatic pistol tightened until his knuckles turned ghostlywhite.
"Julian," Dante said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling growl that vibrated with suppressedrage. "I should have put a bullet through your skull the night you burned the eastern district."
"And missed out on this family reunion?" Julian chuckled darkly, his cold grey gaze shifting pastDante’s broad shoulder to lock onto Elena, who stood sheltered behind the mafia king's tacticalvest. Julian’s eyes glittered with predatory interest as he appraised her. "So, this is the preciousmedical prodigy whose mother’s research holds the key to the entire syndicate’s future... andmore importantly, the weakness that finally brought the great Rebel King to his knees."
Elena felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but she refused to cower. She kept her chin high, herhazel eyes fixed squarely on Julian, her hand sliding forward to lightly touch the back of Dante’sbelt—a silent anchor to let him know she wasn't breaking."She is not a prize, Julian. And she is certainly not yours to touch," Dante warned, his tone alethal ultimatum. Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring, ready to launch into amurderous strike.
Julian let out a sharp, mocking laugh, raising his right hand in a slow, deliberate gesture.Instantly, half a dozen heavy tactical operatives stepped out of the smoke behind him, theirassault rifles raised and locked squarely onto Dante and Marcus.
"Spare me the melodrama, dear brother," Julian sneered, his expression hardening into absoluteruthlessness. "Father left the syndicate to you because of your brute force, but brute force has ashelf life. The Vanguard wants the research drives, and I want your entire empire. Hand over thegirl and the flash drives quietly, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you and your loyal lapdog walkout of these tunnels alive."
Marcus scoffed quietly from the shadows, shifting his grip on his rifle despite his woundedshoulder. "Sounds like a terrible deal, Boss. What do you think?"
Dante didn't look back at Marcus. His eyes never left his brother’s face, a dark, dangerous smirkslowly curving the corner of his lips.
"You always were arrogant, Julian," Dante replied softly, his voice dangerously calm. "You thinkbecause you breached this room, you've won. You forgot one fundamental rule about my world."
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "And what's that?"
"I don't play to survive," Dante declared, his voice exploding with sudden, earth-shatteringauthority as his thumb violently flipped the switch on the perimeter charge he had palmedearlier. "I play to annihilate."
Before Julian could scream an order, Dante slammed the heavy explosive device against thecentral structural pillar behind him and shoved Elena hard into Marcus’s arms.
"Get her to the secondary transport!" Dante roared, pivoting with blinding speed and openingfire into the Vanguard squad.
Explosions ripped through the concrete cavern as chaos erupted in a deafening symphony of fire, shattering glass, and flying debris. The structural pillar fractured under the force of the blast, raining heavy chunks of concrete down between Julian's strike team and Dante's position.Through the blinding dust and strobe-like muzzle flashes, Dante charged forward, a dark angel ofvengeance cutting through the smoke to reach his traitorous brother. As Marcus dragged a protesting Elena down the dark, emergency service tunnel toward theescape hatch, Elena looked back one last time through the smoke. She saw Dante locked in brutal,hand-to-hand combat with Julian, the fierce battle of blood and brotherhood echoing off thestone walls. Her heart hammered against her ribs in pure agony, silently praying to the universethat he would survive the war he was fighting for her.
The heavy steel emergency door slammed shut behind them, plunging the escape tunnel intodarkness, save for the flickering red glow of the backup exit lights.
Marcus heaved a heavy breath, checking his sidearm before looking down at Elena. "We're out ofthe primary sector, but the perimeter alarm is blaring city-wide. We need to move, fast."
Elena nodded, wiping a streak of soot from her cheek, her hazel eyes burning with a newlyforged, unshakeable steel. She wasn't just an innocent bystander anymore. She was part of thiswar now, and she would do whatever it took to make sure Dante walked out of those tunnelsalive.
"Let's move," Elena said firmly, her voice steady and resolute in the dark
