Chapter 2

1838 Words
*Samson* The sun was setting on the horizon as I went over the pack funds and the stock logs so that I could ensure we had everything for tomorrow's summer solstice gala. We have had it every summer to celebrate the safe migration our pack made about twenty years ago from the mountains of Canada to the Big Sky Country of Montana. A war was going on when I was only two years old. A powerful vampire coven had moved into Canada and started slaughtering the more miniature werewolf packs in the country. Nobody knew why they came or their reasoning for slaughtering the packs, and even if we knew why, it wouldn’t have mattered. What mattered was protecting our people. My father was the Alpha then. He banded with about ten other alphas of larger packs similar to ours, and they decided to fight back against the Vampires. Long story short, our pack grounds and other’s packs were burned literally to the ground, and we managed to run the vampires out of Canada. But even with the Vampires gone, our homes were in such disarray and completely uninhabitable, so my father and the other alphas decided to move our packs up to America. Ultimately bringing us to Montana. My eyes drift from the piles of paperwork to the photo of my father on the far corner of my desk. It has been two years since he was killed and I took over as Alpha and the grief still affected me a great deal. My father was everything to me, I wanted nothing more than to be just like him, a powerful, fair, and beloved alpha who worked hard to lead his people to success, happiness, and a life of safety and tranquility. As my mind wandered to thoughts of my father I didn't notice Kane my beta and best friend standing in the doorway. He eyes me sympathetically as he looks from me to the photo of my father on my desk. “Sorry to disturb you, Sam, but a suspicious car was spotted on that dirt road leading to the Cabot ranch. It's a car nobody has seen before and therefore poses a threat to the safety of the pack. He informs me. This immediately captures my attention. No one ever visits the Cabot ranch, My dad used to send me to help out on Miss Cabot’s ranch in the summertime when I was a teenager. She's a nice older lady, she always talked about her daughter and granddaughter and how they came to visit her every year for the Christmas holidays. But about ten years ago her daughter passed away in a tragic car accident and her grandaughter went to a boarding school for girls to live in and hasn't been back since. I haven't visited Miss Cabot in almost two years since the death of my dad. But maybe I should change that, she's older and doesn't have any family really, she shouldn't be out on that big ranch alone. And who could be driving on the road to her ranch? Very few people drove out there, excluding people from the town who visited or ranch hands she hired yearly to help her run the stables. “Get a few of our best guards, we are going to scope the situation out,” I tell Kane, and he nods mind linking a few of the guards to meet us at the gates. Once we exit the pack house I strip out of my clothes and Shift into my wolf Silas. “Ah, it's good to finally be free.” Silas scoffs. “I know I've been taking too long to let you out lately I have just been so busy with all the preparations that I have not had the time to let you stretch your legs,” I say apologetically. “I am your wolf, a part of you, you have to take care of us first before you can govern the entire pack. What good is a weak and broken-down alpha going to do to a pack as large as ours?” He lectures me. I'm about to respond to him when the sounds of a car driving along the dirt road interrupt me. The sun is almost gone, and I signal for the rest of my guys to split up and follow the car. It's an old Ford Focus that's bright blue, and the license plate reads F1R3SS. "Who is that?" Kane asks through the mind link. "I don't know, but I'm going to get a closer look. The rest of you watch my back and stay hidden among the trees and brush," I command. I stalk alongside the car, staying hidden within the bushes. But from this position, I can't get a good view of the driver of the car. Something in me encourages me to do the unthinkable, and I leap out in front of the car. The driver slams on their brakes and comes to a screeching halt. I look into the windshield, and that's when I come eye to eye with the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. She has hazel eyes that resemble the depths of a mysterious forest, a captivating blend of earthy hues that mirror the enchantment of the moonlit night. In that moment with our gazes locked on one another, time seems to stand still, and a profound connection sparks between us. Her hazel eyes widen in surprise, a mix of fear and curiosity evident in her gaze. Does she feel it too? I wonder to myself as I stalk up to the car. But then she did something I didn't expect, she put the car in reverse and slowly started to back away from me. The more she backs away the angrier I suddenly feel. A supernatural Possessiveness overcomes me as I stalk over to the car my eyes locked on her like that of a beast to its prey. “Sam, are you okay?” Kane asks through the mind link, but I brush his voice aside as I am mere inches from the car, I'm tempted to climb on the hood of the car to get her to stop backing away when I am startled by the loud sound of a shotgun shot be blasted in my direction. This breaks the connection we have momentarily and I scramble off the road and into the trees, but not before catching a whiff of the most enticing scent of cinnamon and ginger, that I've ever smelled—that's when it suddenly hit me, she is my. “MATE!” Silas howls fiercly. The loud howl can be heard by all of the wolves in the area and the guards that are with me as well as Kane all howl in excitement for their alpha. It takes everything in me to convince Silas not to run over to her and shift. Instead, we stomp away and Once we are at a safe viewing distance I realize that the person who fired the shot is none other than Miss Cabot, she inches over to the car and the woman looks up at her with bewilderment. “Nana, What are you doing out here? Where did that big-ass wolf come from? And why the hell do you have a shotgun?” she rambles. Understanding finally encompasses me. That's Miss Cabot's granddaughter. They exchange a few words before Miss Cabot gets in the car and speeds towards the ranch house. Once they are a ways away I step back onto the dirt road and watch the back of the car. The rest of my guards join me on the dirt road but it is Kane's wolf who comes to stand next to me. “We should be getting back Alpha,” he says through our mind link. “I can't i have to go get my mate,” I tell him “Sam she's a human, you can't just go up to her as a giant black wolf and think she's not going to fear you or run away,” he says, but I ignore him starting to walk towards the ranch. “ I don't care if she's human, she's my mate, I have to protect her now. She’s the rightful Luna of our pack, and now that I've seen her I have to make her mine!” I tell him sternly. “Sam I don't think this is a good idea.” “Well lucky for you it's the alpha's job to think and it's your job to follow orders,” I tell him. “Now you and the others get back to the pack and inform the rest of the guards that there is no threat,” I order him. I won't spare him a second glance as Silas and I trot carefully up the road and watch our mate from a safe distance. She argues with her grandmother about her helping her retrieve some of her things from the car and they retreat inside the house. Once they are inside I get closer to the house, I watch as they share a meal and look at a photo my mate retrieved off of the refrigerator. “Goddess she is beautiful. I just want to claim her and mark her right here and now.” Silas fantasizes. “I know Silas, so do I but we can't just yet, Kane was right, she's a human she wouldn't quite understand anything about the supernatural world, it might frighten her if we just bombard her with this information so soon, and especially if we force our claim on her and take her away from her life to become the Luna when she knows absolutely nothing about werewolves, or pack laws for that matter. I don't want to scare her off.” I sigh. “So what's the plan then because I am going to go feral if I don't so much as talk to my mate face to face soon,” Silas whines. “I don't quite have a plan just yet, but you can guarantee I'm going to be keeping my eye on her until the time is right,” I assure him. I spend the next hour or so watching from the window as she talks to her grandmother and then eventually retreats to her bedrooms to get some rest. At which point I make my way back to the pack. I am bombarded by Kane and a few other ranking wolves from the pack upon my return. They are eager to learn about their soon-to-be new luna and the Alphas found fated mate. I know Kane had to have run his big mouth and I eye him menacingly to which he throws his hands up to nervously surrender. I retreat to my office, not answering any questions and I just sit there committing her image to my memory as I sit and stew over my plans to get my mate in my arms.
