Layford ran to where he last saw the backpacks they had thrown down including those from the horse. Brenna followed and grabbed two of them while Layford picked up three. They began running toward the path Brenna and Slaton had been on just minutes earlier, though it now seemed like hours. Layford paused as they got to that spot where his brother had stood and turned to look at Brenna. “You have to take the lead. I don't know where to go." A lock of hair fell across his eyes.
