Dinner

There was a soft knock at the door. “Yes?” I called, my voice trembling slightly. “Master is expecting you downstairs in ten minutes.” Ten minutes. My heart skipped. And then what? I felt a mix of curiosity, anticipation, and fear twisting in my stomach. I smoothed my hands over one of the simple beige dresses laid out for me, wondering if this was some kind of dress code. Carefully, I gathered my hair into a neat bun, trying to appear composed, even though my mind raced with questions. When I reached the bottom of the staircase, the dining room was bathed in warm, golden light. A table was set elegantly for two, the polished silverware gleaming, the plates perfectly arranged. Alex stood a few steps away, talking quietly on the phone. His presence filled the room with an almost tangible weight—I could feel the control and calm that seemed to follow him wherever he went. “Good evening. Will you have dinner with me?” he asked without turning fully. I nodded, my throat tight. “Sit,” he said, gesturing to the chair opposite him. The food was already plated in delicate portions—exquisite dishes that looked as if they had been prepared by a master chef. The aroma was intoxicating, mingling with the faint scent of polished wood and the soft, warm light of the chandelier. Alex began eating immediately, slicing the meat on his plate with precise movements. The sound of the knife against the plate seemed unusually loud in the quiet room. I couldn’t resist the aroma either; I lifted my fork and started eating, trying to match his composed pace. “How is your sister?” he asked between bites, his voice steady, calm. “Thank you. She’s already been sent to Israel,” I replied, my words rushed but measured. “Excellent. And you? Do you like your room?” “Yes, Master. Thank you,” I said, glancing at him briefly. His gaze was sharp, evaluating, yet not unkind. We ate in silence for a while, the only sounds the soft clink of cutlery and the occasional rustle of his movements. Then Alex stood and motioned toward his office. “Come.” I followed him like a lamb trailing its shepherd, head bowed, deliberately slowing my steps as if dragging out the inevitable moment. The rich scent of polished wood and leather followed me, enveloping me in the opulence of his home. Inside his office, he poured whiskey into two crystal glasses, the amber liquid catching the light. He handed one to me and gestured toward the chair. “Are you afraid of me?” he asked, his voice low and calm. “Yes… a little,” I admitted, my fingers tightening around the glass. “I like that you’re honest. Keep it that way.” He took a sip and studied me, his dark eyes almost piercing through me. “You’ll stay here for three weeks. But if either of us is dissatisfied, this arrangement can end sooner. The money will be yours once the contract is completed. If you need anything, tell Lucille. As for confidentiality, I assume there’s no need to repeat it—you’ve already signed and been warned. Correct?” “Yes, Master,” I whispered, my voice almost lost beneath the quiet hum of the room. “I want you to wear only the clothes prepared for you. Nothing else. No underwear. No jewelry. Understood?” “Yes, Master,” I answered, my pulse quickening as I tried to steady my breathing. A hush fell over the room, the kind of silence that makes every small sound—his glass, the faint creak of the chair—amplified. Seconds stretched into minutes. Alex poured himself another drink, the amber liquid catching the soft light again. Finally, I mustered the courage to break the silence. “But… what exactly am I supposed to do?” His gaze sharpened, serious and unwavering, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. “You are to obey. Do as I tell you. Nothing complicated, is it?” I nodded, lowering my head, still searching for some reassurance. None came. “Come,” Alex said finally, motioning for me to follow. “I’ll show you everything.” I rose, my legs trembling slightly, and stepped forward into the unknown.
