Shattered Reflections

940 Words
Evelyn stood at the edge of the Grayson estate’s private dock, her arms wrapped tightly around her torso. The moonlight rippled across the black water, painting everything in a ghostly silver glow. Her thoughts swirled as violently as the waves beneath her feet. The gala had ended, but its echoes still rang in her ears, whispers, laughter, the cruel smirk on Veronica's lips as she’d walked out with Adrian trailing behind her. He hadn’t said a word since then. Not even a glance in Evelyn’s direction. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes, remembering how different things had felt just days ago. The warmth in Adrian’s gaze. The way his voice softened when he said her name. The fleeting moments when she thought... maybe he wasn’t as cold as the world claimed. But that night shattered everything. “Couldn’t sleep?” Evelyn flinched, quickly turning to find Marcus, the estate’s long-time butler and the only one who seemed to still treat her like she belonged. “I needed some air,” she murmured. Marcus studied her for a moment, then walked over and draped a shawl over her shoulders. “Be careful out here. Cold nights like this have a way of getting into your bones.” She gave him a small, grateful smile. “Thanks.” He hesitated before speaking again. “Don’t judge Adrian too harshly.” Evelyn tensed. “He humiliated me. In front of everyone.” “I know. But that woman, Veronica, she’s dangerous. Always has been. Adrian’s not himself when she’s around. There’s history there. Dark history.” Evelyn looked out over the water again, voice barely audible. “That doesn’t excuse it.” “No,” Marcus agreed, “but it explains it.” The following morning, Evelyn stayed in her room, ignoring the knock on her door when breakfast was brought up. Hours passed before she finally ventured down the grand staircase. The mansion was unusually quiet. She made her way to the conservatory, a room flooded with light and filled with rare orchids. She used to love it there, her own little sanctuary. But today, the air felt heavy. Adrian was already inside, seated at the piano. He didn’t look up when she entered. Evelyn hesitated by the doorway. “You're avoiding me,” he said without turning around. She crossed her arms. “And you’re pretending nothing happened.” He finally looked up. His face was unreadable. “It’s more complicated than you think.” “Then explain it.” A long pause stretched between them before he stood, walking toward her. “Veronica is part of my past. A part I wish I could erase. She’s not just an ex, Evelyn. She’s the reason my mother had a breakdown.” Evelyn’s breath caught. “What?” “She tore my family apart. She’s manipulative. Ruthless. She knew showing up at the gala would get to me.” “Then why did you follow her out?” Evelyn asked, eyes flashing. “Why leave me standing there like I didn’t matter?” “Because I panicked,” he said, his voice cracking. “And that’s the truth. She threatened to leak documents about my father’s company, documents that could bury what’s left of his legacy.” Evelyn felt a chill creep down her spine. “So you went after her to strike a deal?” Adrian nodded slowly. “She knows exactly where to strike. And I walked right into it.” She sighed, some of her anger giving way to disappointment. “You still should’ve told me. I’m not just a pawn in this, Adrian. I need to know what we’re really facing.” He stepped closer. “You’re not a pawn, Evelyn. You’re the one thing I’ve tried not to ruin.” Her heart thudded. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then she turned away. “I need time,” she whispered. Adrian didn’t follow her as she left the room. Later that evening, Evelyn sat in the estate library, flipping through an old book but not truly reading it. Her phone buzzed. A message from her father: How are you holding up, sweet girl? Don’t forget, Graysons may be ruthless, but you’re stronger than you know. She swallowed the lump in her throat. Strong. She wasn’t sure she felt that anymore. A soft knock came at the door. This time, she expected Marcus. But it was Adrian. He held something in his hand, a thin, worn envelope. He walked over and handed it to her without a word. Evelyn opened it slowly. Inside was a letter from Adrian’s mother, written years ago before her breakdown. It spoke of betrayal, heartbreak, and the warning signs of Veronica’s influence. It wasn’t just personal, it was dangerous. “She destroyed my mother’s trust, tried to take over the company, and nearly succeeded,” Adrian said quietly. “But I let her manipulate me again... because I was afraid. Of losing control. Of losing you.” Evelyn looked up at him. His eyes were raw, vulnerable in a way she hadn’t seen before. “I’m sorry,” he said. “For everything.” She stared at him for a long time, then nodded slowly. “This doesn’t fix everything... but it’s a start.” Adrian looked relieved. “Then I’ll take it.” As he turned to leave, she called out, “Adrian?” He stopped. “Next time you’re afraid... don’t run from me. Run to me.” His expression softened into something she couldn’t quite name. “I will.” And this time, she believed him.
