Madison knew she was attractive. But only because her mother had been beautiful. Lois Gray had been second runner-up in a Miss America pageant before she’d gotten married. When looking at old photographs of her mother, Madison saw shades of her own profile. Artfully applied makeup and tailored clothing helped color in the lines to round out her appearance.
So Madison was used to being hit on. By construction workers as she walked down the streets of New York City. By businessmen as she lunched at exclusive restaurants and artists as she tried out little-known hole in the wall dives. In the halls of the hospitals, attendings often tried to play doctor with her.
