Chapter 1

When Shay Grant said those words by my hospital bed, the expression on her face was calm, as if she were talking about something that had nothing to do with her. Just coworkers? But in my phone, she was the one listed as my emergency contact. If the doctor had not told Shay every detail about my condition, I doubted she would have stayed by my hospital bed at all. "I'm sorry for taking up your time." My face was calm, but my heart felt like it was being carved open. Shay did not look up at me. She just kept scrolling through her phone, pretending to be busy. After hearing my answer, Shay quickly stood up and gave me a polite smile. "Since you're fine, I'll get going." Her smile was still as beautiful as ever. But to me, it felt strangely unfamiliar. I smiled too, watching her all the way to the door of the hospital room. Just as the door was about to close, Shay suddenly stopped. She turned her head slightly. "Finn, take better care of yourself from now on. Don't always push yourself so hard." After she said that, the door closed gently. The smile on my face turned self-mocking. 'What is that supposed to be? A reminder? Concern? Or a sudden attack of conscience? She just said something so cruel to me.' ***** Shay and I had been together for five years. During our senior year of college, I confessed to her. That was when we officially became a couple. After graduation, we both joined the same travel company as tour guides. I led international tour groups, while she handled domestic tours. Because the company had a clear written policy against workplace relationships, claiming they could affect productivity, dating coworkers was strictly forbidden. It was not until last year, when Shay and I both became gold-level tour guides at the company, that the rule was finally lifted. I had once asked Shay if she wanted to go public with our relationship. After all, being in a secret relationship was exhausting. But every time, she refused, using her career as an excuse. At this point, I did not even know whether she and I still counted as a couple. But today, I finally got my answer. Apparently, the doctor's warning that I had a high chance of losing my memory meant nothing to Shay. She was not even worried about whether I had actually lost my memory. She still dared to define us as coworkers right to my face. I guessed she probably did not care about me anymore. That made sense. After all, no one could divide their heart in two. If she spent all her energy on me, how would she have any left to flirt with Milo Lewis?
