I paid the fare, got out of the cab, went upstairs, and took out my keys. I gently pushed the door open. The curtains in the living room had been pulled back, letting sunlight spill across the room. On the TV, some romance drama I could not understand was playing. Shay was sitting on the couch, holding her phone to her ear and listening. Every now and then, she replied with a few voice messages. The whole time, there was a faint smile on her lips. She did not notice at all that I had been standing in the doorway for several minutes. "Shay." Hearing my voice, she turned her head in panic.
