CHAPTER 5

516 Words
ESTELLE Life was never kind to me. Although sometimes life could be funny. The funniest thing life did was send me Vega. A joke I am grateful for. My Father was the Chief seer before Koran died. He was revered. You couldn’t live in the city without hearing of Silas Nebula. He was a great mediator ,worked side by side with the unseen often warning the lord commander of impending doom. How was he rewarded? Death. No one knows the cause of his untimely death. The celestis in all their self acclaimed wisdom couldn’t give an explanation as to why his death happened. They simply said he became a mediator to the heavens. Everyone thought I possessed the same wisdom as my father, that I would become the next chief seer. Unfortunately for them, I had not awakened my powers. I was put under the care of Koran and that’s how life gave me Vega. Vega was born awake, that’s how good she had it. People often compared us, not outright. Celestis are very wise people, if they were to advise you, it’ll be very easy to understand. If they were to put you down it will be in the worst way possible. Koran began to train me. If my powers could sleep for so long, I was not allowed to. I learned the geography of the tribes down to the literature. I could easily attend any scholars meeting. Life was not kind enough to keep Koran. This time he was not a mediator to the heavens. He was simply another chief seer who died. Another name in the book. I expected Vega to be inconsolable but she was not. She simply looked me in the eye and said “my father was not the first man to die and he won’t be the last man to die”. I placed a hand on her shoulder. I just wanted her to know I was there for her. Celestis do not mourn. It is a waste of time, we acknowledge the death of the person and move on. Vega placed her hand over my hand. She lied. She wanted to mourn. She wanted to ask the heavens why they took Koran. So there we were, fatherless, not knowing what happened to our mothers neither knowing why our fathers died. So when the letter came from the capital city, we took it. Even if we do not get the position, I must know why Silas died. The day we arrived in the capital city was the day Vega’s eyes began to lose color. The city smelled like death. The same city that took father and Koran. The advisors groan brings me back to reality as he shows us our rooms “Sleep tight, big day ahead tomorrow” Vega and I took in the sight of the room, everywhere was thoroughly furnished. Like the maids were trying to please us. We can’t get lost in this vain hospitality. Most of all, I cannot lose focus on the goal. How did Father die? And who is the unseen?
