The room felt dimly lit and freezing cold. Exhaustion from screaming and raging continuously left my body utterly drained of strength. The iron chain bound around my left ankle felt agonizingly heavy and icy, locking my movement near the bed.
In the dead silence of the night, I caught the faint sound of heavy footfalls clinking along the corridor outside. The steps came to a halt right in front of my door.
Has Nikol come back?
“Did she try to escape?”
That heavy, cold, and deeply intimidating voice made my heart feel as though it had stopped beating altogether. Nikol. That madman was back.
“She went wild earlier, screaming hysterically and demanding to be let out, Boss,” a guard’s voice answered from behind the door. “But since the chain on her leg blocked her from leaving and no one answered, she wore herself out. We haven’t heard a peep from her since.”
Overwhelmed by intense panic upon hearing that conversation, I reacted instantly—leaping onto the bed, pulling the blanket over myself, and turning my back to the door. I squeezed my eyes shut, pretending to be asleep, my heart hammering brutally against my ribs. I could only pray that man wouldn't torture me again tonight.
The door creaked open, followed by a rush of masculine breath carrying scents I knew all too well: pungent whiskey and a sharp, woody cologne.
The mattress behind me sank heavily under the weight of his large frame landing beside me. The chill of his presence and the potent stench of alcohol wafted strongly through the air.
A muscular hand gripped my shoulder, forcing my body around to face him. I kept my eyes tightly shut, holding my breath in sheer panic.
The rough stroke of his fingers caressed my cheek with a terrifyingly sensual touch.
“I know you’re not asleep, Elena,” he whispered coldly, right in front of my face.
I remained completely silent. Fear and hatred churned inside my chest. Nikol chuckled cynically, then rolled onto his back beside me, staring up at the ceiling.
“You know? I just came back from your family’s party,” he said, his voice raspy. “They were celebrating Tristan’s major tender victory... and that bastard got a double dose of happiness because Valerie is pregnant.”
My chest tightened as I listened. Brother Tristan and Valerie... they were having a baby?
“And next month... Tristan is going to marry Valerie,” Nikol continued softly, his tone laced with thick, lingering malice.
Hearing those words brought a flicker of relief to my heart. Brother Tristan was finally getting married. But without realizing it, my wandering thoughts slipped right out of my mouth.
“Isn’t it only fair that Valerie left Nikol? Especially with a personality like his...”
My body froze instantly. My eyes snapped open in horror. Damn it, I said that out loud!
Before I could swallow my words back down, Nikol flipped his body over, trapping me beneath him. His face hardened, consumed by a terrifying fury.
“What did you say?” he demanded in a dangerously low pitch.
“N-no...” I shook my head frantically as his hand clamped down tightly on my jaw.
“What? ‘Isn’t it only fair,’ you said?” he hissed.
I tried to swat his hand away, but Nikol easily seized my wrist, pinning it firmly against the mattress above me.
“What do you even know about my personality, hmm?” he barked directly into my face.
The mounting terror inside me suddenly flared into a spark of rage. I couldn't keep showing weakness in front of this devil! Gathering every ounce of courage I had left, I forced my eyes open and stared straight into his sharp, dark gaze.
“What do you think?! Who could ever stand your pushy, immoral nature!” I screamed right in his face.
Nikol let out a dark laugh—a sound that sent a chill straight down my spine. His grip shifted to my chin, squeezing my jaw so hard I winced in pain.
“Fine. I’ll show you... just how this pushy, immoral nature will keep you bound to me forever,” he whispered, his words dripping with venom.
As he pulled his face back slightly, the overwhelming hatred surging inside me triggered a reflex.
I spat right in his face.
Nikol froze. He wiped the wet spot off his chin with his thumb. Yet, instead of flying into a rage, a terrifyingly sinister smirk carved onto his lips. Without taking his eyes off me for a single second, he licked the spit right off his own finger.
The air in the room instantly turned suffocatingly heavy. The sinister smirk on Nikol’s face vanished, replaced by an expression of intense, dark obsession.
Before I could even process the gravity of what I’d just done, his large hand shot out, cupping my jaw in a firm, unyielding grip that pinned me completely to the mattress.
Nikol leaned down, his face a hair’s breadth from mine, his dark obsidian eyes burning with a volatile mix of fury and twisted fascination.
“You never learn, do you, little bird?” his voice came out as a low, dangerous rumble. “You think your defiance hurts me? It only makes me want to claim you even more.”
“L-let... go...” I gasped, weakly clawing at his wrists. My nails dug into his skin, but he didn't even flinch. To him, my struggles were nothing more than the futile fluttering of trapped prey.
With a swift, dominant motion, Nikol unbuttoned my top, exposing my skin to the chill of the room. A violent shiver ran down my spine as his cold gaze swept over me.
“Nikol...” My voice trembled as tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks.
“Too late for hesitation, Elena,” he murmured against the shell of my ear, his breath hot and heavy against my neck. “You pushed the devil, and now you have to face the consequences.”
His lips dragged forcefully along my jawline down to my collarbone, biting and marking my skin with possessive ferocity. Every touch was an assertion of total control, reminding me that no matter how hard I fought, I was completely under his spell inside this isolated mansion.
