The Poisoned Vase

651 Words
Although it was past midnight, a time when she should be resting after a long day, Victoria found herself in a very different situation. She had to give up her bed to her servant and, not only that, she had to take care of her. She had never shown such favor to any servant before, not even Clara, who had served her for so long. Worry was etched on Victoria's face, her brows furrowed. A feeling of unease welled up inside her, a mix of suspicion and pity. Hastily, she called for another servant, instructing them to fetch the family doctor immediately. Emily lay on the bed, her small body curled up, her face pale, and cold sweat trickling down her temples. She was barely conscious, her breathing heavy and labored. Victoria sat by the bedside, her eyes never leaving Emily. Soon, the family doctor, Mr. Thompson, a middle-aged man with a stern expression, entered the room. He carried a leather bag of medical instruments and quickly approached Emily's bedside. "Miss Victoria, I came as soon as I heard." Mr. Thompson said, his voice deep and calm. "Let me examine her condition." Victoria stepped back, allowing Mr. Thompson to work. He carefully checked Emily's pulse, heartbeat, and body temperature. After a few minutes, Mr. Thompson looked up, his face grave. "Miss Victoria, it appears she has been poisoned." he said, his tone unable to conceal his concern. "It might be from exposure to a potent toxin." "Poisoned?" Victoria repeated in shock, her eyes wide. "How could that be? Emily was just cleaning this room!" Mr. Thompson shook his head, his eyes thoughtful. "This toxin could have been placed on an object in the room for some time. If left undisturbed, it can spread through the air, gradually poisoning anyone who breathes it." Victoria suddenly remembered the jade vase that Emily had confessed to breaking. She looked around the room, searching for any remaining shards of the vase. Mr. Thompson noticed the change in her expression. "Miss, did something come to mind?" he asked. Victoria quickly went to her desk and bent down. Just as Emily had said, the shattered vase was hidden beneath it. The fragments of the jade had turned a deep black, mixed with a fine powder that had a pleasant scent, making it undetectable in the room. "Here it is! Emily broke this jade vase. The poison must have come from it." Mr. Thompson bent down and carefully collected the shards and the red powder. He took a small vial from his medical bag, placing some of the powdery fragments inside to analyze later. "Don't worry, I will examine these fragments to determine the toxin. But for now, I need to treat her to mitigate the poison's effects." Mr. Thompson began his work, preparing a temporary antidote and administering it to Emily. Victoria stood by, anxiously watching over her maid. "I hope she pulls through. I'm so sorry you had to suffer this poison in my place. I will find out who did this." Victoria whispered, her voice filled with worry. Mr. Thompson nodded, continuing his treatment. "I will do everything I can to save her, Miss Victoria. But I will need more time to investigate this toxin further." The sharp needle pierced Emily's vein, drawing just enough blood. The color of the blood quickly changed upon contact with the air, alarming both Mr. Thompson and Victoria as it indicated the presence of a deadly poison. While Mr. Thompson attended to Emily, Victoria stepped out of the room, her mind swirling with thoughts of conspiracy and betrayal. Who had placed the poison in the jade vase? Was this part of a larger plot to harm her family? Victoria couldn't shake the feeling that a dark conspiracy was lurking within her mansion. She resolved to investigate thoroughly, to uncover the culprit and protect her family from any further danger.
