DAISY’S POV
I didn't sit. I stayed rooted to the spot, my fingers curling into tight fists at my sides.
At that moment, I wanted to forget my life for a few hours. I thought about what I'd said to him.
AH…the money incident.
Why did I do that?
Why the hell did I say that?
I'm definitely getting fired.
Oh no, I really need this job.
I took a deep breath and glanced at the man putting on a cold expression, flipping through documents like I barely existed.
“You are still standing,” he said without looking up.
God.
Even his voice sounded arrogant.
I slowly sat down in the leather chair right in front of his desk. My brain felt like it was exploding as I stared at him.
I couldn't believe it. The man who had been with me in a hotel room a few hours ago was now the cold man sitting behind a huge black desk.
“Miss Carter.”
His deep voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
I straightened immediately, “Yes sir.”
His grey eyes lifted to meet mine briefly before returning to the file in his hands.
“You are late on your first day.”
“I already apologized, sir,” I replied softly. “The traffic was bad.”
Of course, I have to lie.
“I don't tolerate excuses “
My fingers tightened against my bag as I pressed my lips into a thin line.
This man was seriously annoying.
For a moment, the office became silent.
Darrell finally lifted his eyes to me.
Cold grey eyes.
Sharp enough to make my stomach tighten nervously.
I gave him a friendly smile, having the belief that he would see me as a nice person.
Just for this moment, because I'm never a nice person to an arrogant dude.
Darrell kept staring at me like he was trying to read every thought inside my head.
I looked away at first.
Big mistake.
Because the second I looked away, memories of last night flashed through my head again.
His touch.
His lips.
The way he…
Nope.
Daisy, don't start here.
“Miss Carter!”
I blinked quickly and looked back at him.
“Yes?”
“If you are going to work here, I expect professionalism.”
The way he emphasized the word professionalism made heat rush straight to my face flush.
Oh. He definitely did that on purpose.
“I understand sir,” I replied tightly.
“Good.”
Again with his cold one-word replies.
Darrell closed the file in front of him before leaning back slightly in his chair.
“Your job here is simple,” he continued calmly. “Do your work properly, stay organized, and avoid unnecessary distractions.”
Distractions?
Was I a distraction?
Because if yes, that was very unfair considering this man looked like a sinner in a designer suit. He's really annoying.
I cleared my throat awkwardly.
“I can handle my job.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“I hope so.”
Why did every sentence from him sound like a challenge?
The office suddenly became quiet again.
I hate it when it's so quiet, especially around him.
The tension between us felt unbearable.
I hated the fact that he looked completely calm while my heart kept acting stupid whenever he stared at me.
Then suddenly, Darrell opened one of the drawers beside him.
At first, I paid no attention.
Until he brought out a familiar hundred-dollar bill.
My eyes widened instantly.
Oh no!
Absolutely not.
Without saying anything, he placed the money neatly on the desk between us.
“You forgot this,” he said calmly.
I wanted the earth to open and swallow me immediately. He's definitely making me the p********e now.
And I really can't do anything. I'm in his world now.
“I don't want it,” I muttered in embarrassment.
Darrell’s expression remains unreadable.
“Keep it,” he said almost immediately.
A faint smirk touched his lips for the first time.
“Besides,” he said smoothly, “aside from being a CEO, I don’t have any side jobs.”
My jaw dropped.
Did he seriously just say that?
“You are unbelievable,” I muttered loud enough for him to hear.
“And you’re dramatic.”
I let out a short disbelieving laugh.
“You tried to pay me!” I said, almost yelling.
But I have to control my temper, and my tongue. Just for this moment.
“You threw money at me first,” he said.
“Because you were actually trying to insult me!” I snapped.
My cheeks burned instantly.
God.
I hated this man.
I quickly stood up from the chair before my embarrassment killed me completely.
“You know what? Forget it.”
I grabbed the money angrily from the table.
Darrell watched me silently, his expression unreadable again.
“I have no interest in discussing last night further, Miss Carter,” he said professionally. “You work here now. Behave accordingly.”
That somehow annoyed me even more.
“Oh trust me,” I shot back. “Nobody wants to forget last night more than me.”
For the first time, something dangerous flickered in his eyes. The air in the office suddenly changed.
Darrell slowly stood up from his chair and walked toward me.
My heartbeat instantly quickened.
Too close.
He stopped directly in front of me, his tall figure making me feel trapped.
“Be careful, Daisy,” he said quietly.
The way my name rolled off his lips made my stomach twist annoyingly.
“I don’t repeat warnings.”
I swallowed hard but forced myself to hold his stare.
“Then maybe stop giving me reasons to ignore them.”
For one long second, neither of us moved.
The tension between us felt dangerous.
Then suddenly…
A knock interrupted us.
Both of us stepped back almost immediately.
Thank God.
Sarah entered carefully.
“Sir, the board members are waiting for you,” she said, bowing her head.
Darrell adjusted the sleeve of his suit calmly before looking back at me.
“Your desk will be outside my office from today onward,” he said casually.
I blinked in shock.
“What?”
How?…why?
“You’ll work directly under me now.”
My mouth fell open instantly.
Absolutely not.
“That wasn’t part of my employment letter.”
His eyes locked onto mine calmly.
“And now it is.”
