I HEADED the Chev around Harbor Drive, and I was in a hurry. Shona’s disappearance brought on a brainstorm, and the reason was I remembered how hedgy she’d been about Westburne’s envelope all along. She’d not wanted to tell me about that angle in the first place, and only after a hell of an argument had she consented to let me see the thing. Now it hit me she’d probably had a last-minute change of mind last night. When we walked into her apartment, she’d suddenly decided not to give me a peep into that envelope . . . at least, not until she’d had a chance to see for herself what it contained.
