The city stretched endlessly below, a sea of lights flickering against the night. But Maya barely saw it. Her pulse was still uneven, her thoughts a whirlwind she couldn’t escape.
Adrian stood behind her, unmovable as stone, his presence crowding the air. His words still clung to her skin like smoke I’ll protect you from yourself too.
The arrogance in him infuriated her. But beneath it, there was something else. Something that made her chest ache no matter how hard she tried to fight it.
Maya turned sharply, breaking the silence. “You can’t decide my life for me. You can’t keep pulling me deeper into this war when I never asked for it.”
Adrian’s gray eyes glinted under the balcony lights, cool and unreadable. “And if walking away means your life ends before you even taste freedom? Would you still choose it?”
Her lips parted, words forming but dying before they could escape. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a husky whisper.
“You think this is about control. It isn’t. It’s survival. Dominic doesn’t stop, Maya. He doesn’t forgive. Once he marks someone, they either belong to him… or they disappear.”
A tremor ran through her. The way Adrian said belong stirred something primal in her chest, but the terror of it drowned her faster.
“Then why me?” she demanded, her voice cracking. “What makes me worth fighting over to him? To you? I’m just”
“Don’t you dare,” Adrian cut in, his voice sharp as a blade. He closed the distance until her back pressed against the railing, his shadow swallowing hers. His hands braced the steel behind her, caging her in without touching her. “Don’t you ever call yourself just anything. You are the one thing Dominic cannot corrupt. And you are the one thing I refuse to lose.”
The intensity in his voice stole her breath. His face hovered inches from hers, his eyes burning into her soul. She hated the way her body betrayed her, trembling not from fear but from the fire his presence ignited inside her.
She whispered, almost to herself, “You speak as if I already belong to you.”
Adrian’s lips curved in a dangerous smile. “That’s because you do.”
The words crashed over her like thunder. Her knees weakened, her pulse racing. She should have shoved him away, screamed at his audacity, but all she could do was stare back at him, her heart pounding so loudly she wondered if he could hear it.
“Adrian”
Her phone buzzed again in her pocket. The sound sliced through the tension like a knife. Adrian’s expression darkened, his hand shooting out lightning fast. He plucked the phone from her grasp before she could stop him.
“Give it back!” she snapped, lunging for it.
His height gave him the advantage, holding it out of her reach with ease. His thumb slid across the screen, and his jaw tightened.
Another message from the same number.
Unknown: He’ll burn the world for you, Maya. And when there’s nothing left, he’ll burn you too.
Adrian’s fingers curled around the phone until his knuckles whitened. “He thinks he’s clever,” he growled. “But I’ll carve those words back into him a thousand times worse.”
Maya’s stomach turned cold. “Adrian, stop. This isn’t helping. He’s inside my head now, and you” She faltered, swallowing hard. “You’re proving him right.”
The pain in her words made his grip loosen. He handed the phone back, his eyes softer now but no less fierce.
“I’m not him,” he said firmly. “Don’t confuse us.”
Her chest rose and fell in rapid breaths. “Then prove it. Don’t lock me up in this cage you call protection. Don’t make decisions for me. Show me you’re different.”
For a long moment, neither of them moved. The city hummed below, the night pressing in.
Then, with a breath that sounded almost like surrender, Adrian stepped back. The loss of his closeness sent a pang through her, one she refused to acknowledge.
“You want proof?” His voice was low, steady, but threaded with something raw. “Then tomorrow, you’ll come with me. I’ll show you exactly what I’m fighting against and why I can’t let you walk away.”
Her eyes widened. “Tomorrow?”
His gaze locked onto hers, unyielding. “Yes. No more shadows. No more whispers. You want answers? I’ll give them to you. But once you see, there’s no going back.”
Maya clutched the phone to her chest, her heart hammering. Part of her wanted to scream no, to run as far as she could. But another part the reckless, desperate part wanted the truth more than she feared the danger.
She exhaled shakily. “Fine. Tomorrow.”
A flicker of something unreadable passed through Adrian’s eyes. Relief. Fear. Maybe both.
He stepped closer again, but this time he didn’t touch her. His voice was a whisper, meant only for her.
“Rest tonight, Maya. Tomorrow, everything changes.”
Her breath caught. The way he said it made her both dread and crave what was to come.
And as Adrian walked back inside, leaving her on the balcony with her thoughts, Maya realized the most dangerous thing of all:
It wasn’t Dominic’s threats that terrified her.
It was how much she already belonged to Adrian Black.
