Maya’s hands trembled as she unlocked the door to her apartment that evening. The breakfast with Adrian still clung to her skin, every word echoing in her mind, every glance from that stranger at the bar replaying like a warning. She dropped her bag by the couch and pressed her palms to her face.
What was happening to her life?
Two weeks ago, her biggest concern had been landing a new client and paying rent on time. Now she was caught between Adrian Blackwood the man who had signed her into a contract she barely understood and a mysterious rival whose gaze promised danger of another kind.
Her phone buzzed.
She flinched.
The message was simple.
Eat. Sleep. Do not ignore me. A
Her stomach twisted. Adrian. He wasn’t just everywhere he was inside her world now, watching, anticipating her every move. She wanted to throw the phone across the room, to scream, to block his number. But she didn’t. Instead, she set it gently on the table and sank onto the couch, exhausted by a war she hadn’t chosen.
When morning came, she forced herself to walk into the office. The familiar hum of computers and the smell of burnt coffee grounds should have calmed her. But she felt eyes on her, whispers trailing behind her steps.
“Maya.”
Her colleague, Lila, leaned across the partition with a smirk. “Who’s the man picking you up in that shiny black car? Don’t tell me you’ve been holding out on me.”
Heat flushed Maya’s face. “It’s not like that.”
Lila arched a brow. “Right. So he just happens to be rich, impossibly gorgeous, and obsessed with you for no reason?”
Maya’s heart stumbled. Lila didn’t know the half of it.
Before Maya could respond, the glass doors to the office swung open. Conversations faltered. Heads turned. And there he was.
Adrian Blackwood.
He didn’t belong in an office filled with buzzing printers and cubicles. His presence shifted the atmosphere instantly, turning it electric. His suit was flawless, his stride commanding. He looked like he owned the building and perhaps, in some way, he did.
“Miss Benson,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers.
Maya’s throat went dry. Every pair of eyes in the room swung toward her.
“What are you doing here?” she hissed as he reached her desk.
“I told you not to skip breakfast.” He placed a sleek white box in front of her. Inside, when she dared to peek, was a spread from the city’s most exclusive bakery croissants, fresh fruit, delicate pastries that probably cost more than her weekly groceries.
Her coworkers murmured, stealing glances.
Maya pushed the box back toward him. “You can’t just show up here.”
He leaned closer, his voice meant only for her. “I can. And I will. Get used to it.”
Her pulse raced. The weight of every stare in the office burned her skin. She wanted to vanish, but Adrian was immovable, a shadow that refused to be ignored.
Finally, she stood, grabbing his arm and dragging him toward the hallway. “You’re going to ruin me,” she whispered harshly.
His dark gaze softened just a fraction. “No, Maya. I’m going to protect you.”
“From what?”
The air between them shifted. His expression hardened, as if he had said too much already.
“From him.”
Her blood chilled. She didn’t have to ask who.
Before she could speak, a sharp laugh cut through the hallway.
Maya froze.
The rival stood at the far end of the corridor, leaning casually against the wall as though he had every right to be there. His eyes gleamed with amusement, his smirk sharp enough to cut glass.
“Well, well,” he drawled. “Blackwood parading his little bird in public now? Bold move.”
Adrian stiffened beside her, his hand tightening around hers possessively.
“Leave,” Adrian ordered, his voice dropping to lethal levels.
The rival chuckled, pushing off the wall. “Not yet. I haven’t properly introduced myself.” His gaze slid to Maya, slow and deliberate. “Dominic Vale. And you must be the reason he looks so… unsettled.”
Maya’s stomach knotted. Dominic. The name fit the danger in his eyes, the effortless arrogance in his tone.
Adrian stepped in front of her, his body a barrier. “She’s not yours to speak to.”
Dominic’s grin widened. “Not yet.”
The tension was suffocating. Maya could barely breathe, caught between two predators circling for the kill.
Adrian’s arm tightened around her waist. “Stay away from her,” he growled.
Dominic’s gaze lingered on Maya one last time, a promise of chaos shimmering in his eyes. Then he turned and walked away, whistling softly as though he hadn’t just threatened to tear their world apart.
Maya’s heart pounded, her legs weak. She looked up at Adrian, searching for answers, but his face was carved from stone.
“Who is he?” she whispered.
Adrian’s jaw clenched. “The reason you’ll never be free from me.”
Her blood turned to ice. She didn’t know what scared her more Dominic’s dangerous smile, or the way Adrian said it, as if protecting her meant owning her forever.
