Maya’s pulse hammered as Adrian’s grip tightened around her wrist. His touch wasn’t painful, but it carried a weight, an unspoken promise that he wouldn’t let her go. His storm-gray eyes locked onto hers, unreadable yet overwhelming, and in that instant, she felt caged, tethered by something stronger than steel.
“You belong to me,” he repeated softly, almost as if he were reminding himself as much as her.
Maya swallowed hard, her breath coming shallow. “You can’t just say things like that and expect me to accept it,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
His lips curved into something between a smirk and a grimace. “I don’t expect you to accept it, Maya. Not yet. But you will.”
Her chest rose and fell rapidly. She hated the way his words stirred something inside her, something she couldn’t name. Fear? Desire? Both coiled together, twisting until she couldn’t separate one from the other. She wrenched her wrist free, stumbling back a step.
“Stop controlling every second of my life,” she snapped. “Showing up at my office, texting me like some shadow watching my every move. It’s suffocating!”
Adrian’s expression hardened, his jaw tightening. “I protect what’s mine. If you understood the kind of enemies circling you right now, you wouldn’t accuse me of suffocating you, you’d be begging me not to let you out of my sight.”
Her body stiffened. His words dripped with menace, but it wasn’t directed at her — it was at something, or someone, else. And then her phone buzzed again.
Maya’s stomach twisted as she pulled it out. Another message from the unknown number.
Unknown: He will destroy you. Run before the chains tighten.
Her throat closed. She flicked her eyes up at Adrian, who was watching her closely, his gaze sharp, his patience thinning.
“Who is it?” he demanded.
“No one,” she said too quickly, shoving the phone into her purse. “Just junk messages.”
Adrian moved before she could blink, plucking the bag from her shoulder and retrieving the phone with terrifying ease. Maya lunged forward, panic spiking, but he lifted his hand, holding it out of her reach.
“Adrian!”
His gaze darkened as he read the message, his jaw a rigid line. The air shifted, heavy and dangerous, as though the temperature in the penthouse had dropped.
“Dominic,” he muttered under his breath, venom coating the name.
Maya froze. “Dominic? You know who it is?”
Adrian slipped the phone into his pocket, his movements deliberate, his control barely holding. “You don’t need to know anything about him.”
“The hell I don’t!” she snapped, her voice breaking with fear and frustration. “He’s warning me about you! Don’t I deserve to know what’s going on?”
Adrian closed the distance between them in two strides, his hand cupping her face with startling gentleness. “What you deserve,” he murmured, his eyes boring into hers, “is to be safe. And the safest place for you is with me.”
Her breath hitched. His thumb brushed her cheek, the contrast of tenderness and danger tearing her apart.
“Adrian…” she whispered, not sure if it was a plea to stop or to continue.
He leaned in, his forehead nearly touching hers. “You’re caught in a storm, Maya. The only choice you have is whether you’ll let me shield you, or whether you’ll face it alone. And trust me, alone is a death sentence.”
Her chest tightened. Every word made sense in the moment, wrapped in his voice, in his presence. But another part of her screamed that this was exactly what he wanted to convince her she needed him, to bind her tighter.
“Why should I trust you?” she asked, her voice raw.
His lips brushed against her ear, his breath hot against her skin. “Because I’ve already risked everything to keep you out of his reach.”
Her stomach churned. She wanted to demand answers, to force him to explain what he meant, but his closeness robbed her of the ability to think. His scent wrapped around her, dark and intoxicating, pulling her deeper.
Her hands pressed against his chest, not pushing, not pulling trapped in the space between rejection and surrender. He leaned closer, his lips ghosting over hers, the barest touch sparking fire across her skin.
And then the elevator chimed.
The sound snapped her back to reality. Adrian stilled, his body tense, his eyes snapping toward the doors as they slid open.
Maya turned just in time to see a tall man in a charcoal suit step out, his presence commanding, his smile sharp as a blade.
“Well, well,” the stranger drawled. “Adrian Blackwood, caught with his latest… distraction.”
Adrian’s entire body went rigid, the storm inside him darkening into something lethal. “You’re not welcome here, Dominic.”
Maya’s blood ran cold. Dominic. The man from the texts. The rival who had been warning her.
He looked at her then, his smile softening, though his eyes held an edge of pity. “Maya, isn’t it? You don’t belong here. You don’t belong to him.”
“Don’t,” Adrian snarled, his voice like thunder. He stepped in front of Maya, shielding her from Dominic’s gaze.
But Dominic only smirked. “Protect her all you like, Blackwood. You can cage her, chain her, even brand her with your name but you’ll never protect her from the darkness that follows you.”
Maya’s heart pounded so hard it hurt. She looked from Adrian’s taut shoulders to Dominic’s piercing gaze, and for the first time, she realized she wasn’t just tangled in Adrian’s dangerous world. She was standing at the center of a war she didn’t understand one that could destroy her no matter which man she believed.
“Enough,” Adrian growled, stepping forward, his presence towering, dangerous. “Get out before I make you regret setting foot in my tower.”
Dominic chuckled, his voice low and taunting. “Careful, Adrian. The more tightly you grip her, the more she’ll realize she was never yours to claim.”
With that, he turned and stepped back into the elevator, leaving behind a silence so heavy it crushed the air from Maya’s lungs.
Adrian turned slowly, his eyes burning as they locked on hers. “Do you understand now?” he asked, his voice hoarse but steady. “Do you see why you can’t walk away from me?”
Maya’s lips parted, but no words came. She understood only one thing: her world would never be the same again.
And somewhere deep inside, a terrifying truth settled in her chest she wasn’t sure she wanted it to be.
