Chapter Thirty-Five

TIANA

"Did you miss me, babe?"

I swallowed hard. He was here. Carter was actually here. I thought I was imagining it but no. This bastard was here in my sight.

I backed up slowly, gaining some space but he shocked me by taking large steps and wrapping an arm around my waist and the other hand grabbed onto my chin. I closed my eyes. I was a bit fearful of what he was going to do now.

"You are in so much trouble, baby." His grip grew tighter on my chin.

"Open your eyes." His tone firm and laced with a tad of anger. I did what he said and met his eyes. He looked pissed.

"Why are you down here? In Phoenix?"

I sighed, looking down. Why does my luck have to be so low? I was praying I'd never see him again but here I was wrong.

"My eyes are up here." He said, making me look at him.

"Trying to start over but that didn't last long, did it?" I snapped while pushing away from him. I was about two feet away from him with my arms crossed over my chest.

"Why are you here?" I asked him.

His expression changed from pissed to more of a calm look. He stared at me hard then he spoke up.

"To handle business. Never thought I would find you here."

"Well that makes two of us." I say.

He said nothing. He just stared at me with those intense eyes. He bit his lip before sighing through his nose. It looked like he was about to say something when a familiar voice was heard.

"There you are, Tiana. The race is about to start."

Not the right time, Xavier.

I sighed when I felt Xavier's arm wrap over my shoulder and pulled me closer to him.

"Carter, right?" Xavier sent a polite smile his way, holding out his hand to shake.

I looked at Carter and his face was red. I could tell he was holding back much. Carter cleared his throat before shaking Xavier's hand.

"Right. You must be the famous Xavier." Carter spoke through his teeth.

"Yeah." Carter let Xavier's hand go.

"This is Tiana but I assume you two have gotten acquainted already." He said while pushing me a bit forward.

Carter then looked my way with that unfamiliar look. "I've known Tiana for some time. Been a minute since I've seen her and she still is forever gorgeous." He said, causing me to look down.

"Wait, so you two were...?" Xavier's question trailed off.

"No." I answered quickly just as Carter said "Yes."

I looked at Carter and found him smirking at me. I glared at him and moved away from Xavier.

"I think we should go back. The race is starting soon." I say and without waiting for a reply, I walked away from them.

I wanted to go back to my brother's house and go to bed. This day couldn't get even worse. I was in a tough spot at the moment.

I was close to my spot next to KeKe when I felt a hand on my waist.

My head whipped my head back and I saw Carter and he looked pissed.

His jaw clenched hard while he pushed me over to the side, past a crowd of people. Once in the clearing, he turned me around and grabbed my chin left and his hand moved to the other side of my waist. Then, he slapped my bottom hard causing me to cry out in pain. I brought my hands to his chest and tried to push away but he did not budge nor did he let me go.

That hurt.

"You are in so much fvcking trouble, baby."

"I-I didn't do anything wrong and the last I checked, you don't own me." I said feeling tears begin at the brim of my eyes as I rubbed my aching butt.

"When I win this race, you and I will be heading back to my hotel."

As if he'll win.

I shook my head. "No, I will not."

"Yes, you will and if you don't you will regret it, babe." The last of his words were warning.

I sighed in frustration before nodding my head. He leaned forward and pecked my lips. I instantly turned my head away.

He sighed before letting go of me. He grabbed hold of my hand and led me towards the starting line.

"Carter, I can't—"

"I don't care, babe. You're riding with me."

"But—"

He rounded his car and opened the passenger door for me. That's when Monica made her presence known.

"Just to let you know, if she rides with you during the race then it will be on you if anything distracts you during the race." Monica says, smirking at me.

"Screw you." I said through gritted teeth.

"Don't worry about her riding with me." Carter said, glaring her way.

"Whatever." She muttered while rolling her eyes and walking away.

I got in the car and he closed the door for me. I watched him walk to his side and he stopped when Xavier said something to him. Less than a moment later did Carter get in on his side and slam the door shut.

"I'm going to kill that fvcker." He said to himself.

"Why? He hasn't done anything to you." I said. Yes I was defending Xavier. Carter had no reason to say such words. He didn't even know him.

My frown grew when I heard a dark chuckle from Carter. "If you only knew, babe."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"There is so much you don't know and I hate that you are in the dark about what's really going on around you. That is why I'm taking you back to my suite. I promise you, I'm not your enemy."

I looked over at him and his attention was on the road. His grip on the wheel made his knuckles white. I had a feeling this night was not going to get any easier. Without speaking another word, I put on my seat belt and leaned back in my seat.

Monica walked past with a starter gun and stood on the side of the track.

"Remember, the winner takes all and gets to race Troy! Good luck!" Monica screamed.

"Ready....." engines were started up and running. Carter's engine was loud and boomed.

As soon as the gunshot went off, Carter pressed on the gas and was off.

"Oh shît!" I yelled, terrified for my life.

Carter was driving. Recklessly. And it was scaring me. He was very determined to win this race.

He was dodging other cars around like the other racers. Xavier was in front of us and Idrina was behind us.

Carter had blocked me out as he focused on one thing and that was winning this race. I could do nothing but hold onto something.

Once in an open area, Carter pressed hard on the gas and sped up, now besides Xavier. I took a glance over to Xavier and he looked over at Carter who was still paying attention to the road.

Then all of a sudden, Carter turned the car and hit Xavier's car towards an old building.

I wanted to say something but I couldn't find the words. Carter pulled away before slamming back into Xavier's car. Xavier's car went to the side and started to spin out of control and hit the side of the building before it flipped over.

"What the hell, Carter?!" I yelled at him when he continued driving on and ignoring me.

Bastard.

He made a sharp turn back into the city while pulling out his phone. He dialed a number before holding the phone to his ear.

"Boss man?" I heard a voice on the phone.

"Go get him." Carter said before ending the call.

"What the hell is going on?" I asked angrily.

Who was he talking to and why was he sending someone to get Xavier?

Carter did not answer me but continued to drive. I didn't realize how close we were to the finish line until he passed the line in first place and cheers from the crowd were heard.

As soon as Carter put his car in park, I unbuckled my seat belt and opened the door. Once completely out, I slammed the door shut and walked away from his car.

Something was wrong with him. I don't know what his problem is with Xavier but I won't be a part of any of his bullshît.

I heard the sound of a car door close as I continued to walk. But to my bad luck, I was grabbed and pulled back.

"Get off me, Carter! I'll make a scene." I yelled.

He only smirked at me. I swear he was mad one minute and amused the next. Bipolar.

"I'll help you make a scene. All you have to do is bend over on the hood of my car."

"Fvck you." I snapped at him.

"I promise that will happen real soon." He mused on.

I bit my lip hard. I wanted to smack him so bad. He thought this was funny. He had just flipped Xavier's car over and told his men to go get him. For what? I have no clue.

"Now, go take that fine ass back to the car." His voice came out darker.

I snatched away from him before going straight to the car.
