CHAPTER SIX

THE NEW MAID AND LEARNING THE RULES CLEO'S POV The huge white double doors opened for me. I was very scared that it opened of its own accord. Things were really strange around this place. I heard the clicking sound of something as it came towards my direction but when I looked up, I saw no one. I kept hearing it until I saw an older lady, perhaps the one who was talking earlier, she was neat and had very extremely red lips that matched the red shoes she had on. She looked elegant compared to how we dressed back at the territory. We dressed the way we did majorly to hide our identity. It helped us blend very well with the forest and with nature but seeing this lady now, I wish I had grown up in a more sophisticated place like this. Maybe my name wouldn't even be a reason to want me dead. She walked towards me and I realized that it was her shoes that made that clicking sound I heard earlier. "Are you sure that your name is Audrey?" She asked and scanned me with her eyes. "You don't really look like an Audrey." She said and turned her back to me. "Follow me." I followed suit and as I did, I felt like I was being watched but when I looked up at the top floor balcony, I saw no one. She took me to the kitchen. Even werewolves had that. Food was of utmost importance. But I had not seen the things she called... "... utensils. You need to make sure that they are clean by washing them properly. These plates," My eyes followed the direction of her hand as she pointed at them, "the plates" "They break when they hit the ground so make sure to avoid that. They are really expensive." She said, I nodded in affirmation without saying a word lest I look stupid. "Now that you know all you have to do, clean, cook, and keep the whole place tidy, I will show you to your room." She said and walked out of the kitchen, I followed her while memorizing all that she told me. "Cook, clean, tidy." She walked up the spiral stairs. It has such a beautiful and bright color like that of the sun when its full glory is radiated from the sky. It was really very different from the werewolf world that was limited to the confines of the forest. "Could there be other werewolves from different territories here too?" I thought as I walked behind her up the stairs. We didn't get to the corridor high above us. It was the first turn we took on the lower floor just a little above the very large open space she called a sitting room and the kitchen. She stopped in front of a door and opened it. My eyes grew wide and I gasped in awe. It was so huge. It was painted white and the bed was also very huge. I walked in carefully and skeptically. I had to be alert. "This is where you will be sleeping." She said and walked to another door just inside the room, "and this is where you will have your bath." I nodded. She looked at me, "don't you speak? I mean, aside from saying your name." I didn't know if that was a question I needed to answer. She sighed, "oh well, soon you will be acquainted with the boss. Make sure to treat him nicely and be on your best behavior or else." She didn't say anything more but I could already imagine what the consequences of not doing as she said would be. She turned her back, "get to work immediately." I nodded but inside I was so nervous. "What was the first thing she said?" I thought frantically. I closed my eyes tightly as I tried to recall what she had told me earlier. "Come on, Cleo." I racked my head but nothing. I decided that I would just learn in the process. It's not like I didn't know what to do and how to do it, what I didn't know was how to use the things she mentioned and they were precisely what I forgot. I walked out of the room and she was gone. "What was the first thing she said, Cleo? Cook." I thought and then decided to prepare something. I opened the cupboards and the spices were just so strange but I decided to use it anyway. A FEW HOURS LATER. I was coughing so hard. The smoke was everywhere and then some kind of alarm was blaring. The white tiles had become black but thankfully, the food didn't seem to have anything wrong with it. My face was covered in smoke. I took the food out and walked out of the kitchen. I walked up the stairs to the very top floor. It was very high. I knocked on the door with a distinct design. No one answered and so I opened it and walked in. He was sitting on a chair with wheels just staring at the window. I was not imagining things when I saw someone staring at me from the window when I arrived. Something about him was tickling my senses, like I have met him before. His scent, it seemed so familiar. I shook the thought out of my head, “That's just you thinking crazy, Cleo.” I thought to myself. "Um, boss." That was what she called him. He didn't turn around or stand up to meet me. "Your food is ready. I don't know if you'll like it but I hope you do. It's something we cook traditionally as..." I had to stop myself before I spilled too much. "We traditionally do." I settled with that. I held the tray in my hands and stood for a very long time. He didn't budge or move an inch. My hands were starting to hurt and the time had already gone far. I moved to drop it on his bed before leaving but then he said in a very low and very wonderful voice, "Don't even think about it." He then turned still in his chair and when he did, my heart flipped. He pressed a button on the chair and came close to me. His eyes were solely on me but then he knocked the tray over and I gasped in shock. He turned his back to me and the mess he just created cruelly, "Clean it up and get out." My heart flipped because of how he looked and yet, I felt very drawn to him. It was all so overwhelming. He had the perfect chiseled jaw with ebony wavy hair. I felt the urge to run my hands through them. To feel its soft caress between my fingers. And then those eyes–electric hazel eyes of his, I felt I could be lost in them for eternity. But unfortunately, the rest of his face was perfectly hidden in a black mask. It looked horrible. Even his lips were not visible through the mask. I could not make out if it's plump or thin, It's just the green of his eyes and the contour of his face that was visible when looking at him. I shook my head to get all the crazy thoughts out of my mind. Not at this point, he looked very ugly to me now, the mask and his attitude. I thinned my lips and shut my eyes. I needed to learn a lot while I stayed here if I wanted to survive so I was going to take all his trashy attitude until I've gotten what I wanted. I didn't plan to stay for long. I got on all my fours to clean it up but then I realized that I didn't have a spare cloth with me and so I stood up to get one. "Where are you going?" He asked in a very low tone. Like a rumble in his throat. It sounded very powerful but yet, he was confined to that chair with wheels. I cleared my throat, "I have to get something to clean it up." "You don't expect me to stay here with that mess now do you?" I didn't know what to say to him as an answer to his question because I was confused. "Um..." My eyes kept darting to every corner of the room as I thought of an answer. "Use your clothes. They're filthy enough, just as you are." I gasped as I listened to him talk. It was very annoying. I felt like snapping his neck and ripping his head off. He had no right to talk to me. Who exactly does he think he is? "Actually, I am your boss so I have all the rights to treat you as I please. You answer to me, no one else." My eyes grew wide, "did I just say that out loud?" "Yes." He replied. I slapped my palm over my mouth to stop myself from talking anymore. I used the hem of my shirt to clean up the mess. It was so messy. "I've done as you asked, boss." I said stressing the "boss" He turned around. I watched as his eyes roamed my body and I suddenly started feeling very conscious of how I looked. "You may leave now." He said and turned his back to keep staring at the window like a lost soul. It got me so angry but I controlled my mouth and my thoughts. I decided to walk away silently. I got to the kitchen feeling very annoyed and disgusting. I looked at myself and I hated myself immediately but there was no one I hated more than this boss of mine. I wondered what his name was. I got to my room and peeled my clothes from my body. I sat on my bed with nothing on my body. I curled up and my mind began to wonder what happened that led me to this point. I could not help the tears that began to roll down from my eyes. I lost my babies in the most unfair and cruel way. I haven't met my father but now I don't wish I ever met him. He's absent but yet my life is miserable. His name alone has caused me a lot of problems and pain. My innocent babies died as a result of it. I will never forgive him for that. I sniffed and then I heard a very loud shriek. It was coming from the kitchen. I quickly draped my shirt over my body and ran out the room to the kitchen. It was the lady who taught me what I know about taking care of the boss. "What is all this?" She yelled. "I am so..." I tried to say. "What are you wearing?" She yelled, with disgust dripping in her voice. It was then I looked down at what I was wearing. Just a very stained white shirt over nothing but pants. I instinctively used my hands to try to cover up my body. "Get out of here this instant. All I did was to leave this mansion in your care for just a few hours and it's already a mess. A terrible one at that. It's obvious to me that it's too big for you. You don't belong here at all. I don't know why he allowed you into this house when you should be on the streets picking rats and living as you should." She yelled. I didn't really understand all that she said but it hurt me to my bones. I felt my cheeks burning up and a knot was forming in my throat. All this is happening because of my father. "Didn't you hear me? She asked, "Get out." She yelled once again. I sucked up my pain and tried to keep myself in check because I had the strength to rip her open but that would be bad. I simply turned around. I looked up and saw him watching me with cold eyes though his concealed face from the top floor balcony where his room was. Immediately, I hated him along with my father and everyone that has contributed to making me miserable. He might be sick but he was also horrible at heart. He deserved whatever he was getting.
