Chapter 5 How Dare You Block Me?

1148 Words
Since their last meeting, Jack had unconditionally offered his help to Evelyn, leaving her deeply grateful. But now, she could find no suitable way to repay his kindness and could only keep her gratitude silently in her heart. Over the next few days, Nathaniel seemed to vanish completely. Evelyn hardly crossed paths with him, so she dedicated all her attention to looking after Jack. Whether it was washing his feet, massaging his back, or going on walks and chatting, she handled it all personally. One afternoon, after wrapping up her tasks, Evelyn was about to return to her room to rest when she unexpectedly received a call from Marcus Hunter. "Evelyn, why haven't I heard from you in so long? I called your law firm, and they said you haven't been in for days. What's going on?" he asked. After a moment's hesitation, Evelyn decided not to tell Marcus the truth. Instead, she gave a casual excuse. "Sarah was hospitalized a few days ago, and I've been at the hospital taking care of her." "What? Which hospital? I'll come find you right now," Marcus said urgently. Evelyn tried to decline, but Marcus had already hung up. Left with no choice, Evelyn headed to the hospital. Not long after arriving, Evelyn received another call from Marcus. Hearing the commotion on the other end of the line, she felt a growing unease and quickened her pace toward the ICU. Slightly out of breath, she asked, "Marcus, who are you arguing with?" "You—" But the voice on the other end wasn't Marcus's. "Evelyn!" It was Sean's hysterical roar. "How dare you block me? If you've got the guts, come up here right now! Or I'll cut off Sarah's medical equipment. Try me and see what happens!" "Sean, you—" Evelyn started to respond, but the line went dead. She didn't dare delay. Terrified that Sean might actually do something drastic, she bolted toward the elevator. About ten minutes later, a breathless and disheveled Evelyn arrived at the elevator door. She had barely regained her footing when a pair of rough hands yanked her out. Sean, taller and stronger than her, handled her as easily as an eagle grabbing a chick. Evelyn knew Sean had a bad temper, but she had never seen him this furious in front of her. In the struggle, her collar tore slightly, revealing the curve of her chest. She frowned, shoving Sean away in frustration. While straightening her clothes, she glared coldly at him. "What are you doing here?" If his feelings were fake, If he had always claimed he wanted revenge, Then what was wrong with Evelyn deciding to cut ties once she knew the truth? "Who gave you the right to block me?" Sean demanded, his gaze dark and brooding. "Or are you saying you don't actually want to save Sarah?" Evelyn's heart sank. She never expected him to stoop to such threats. "Sean, do you really think the Landon family is the only force left in Harborview?" Her words hit a nerve. Sean's anger boiled over, and he tightened his grip on her hand, refusing to let go. "Tell me," he growled. "What kind of deal did you make with Nathaniel?" "You—" Evelyn began, but before she could say more, another voice rang out from behind her. "Let go of Evelyn!" Marcus, already battered and bruised, came rushing over, grabbing Sean by the collar in a fit of rage. His young face was covered in cuts, his nose still bleeding, but he didn't care. He stared Sean down, his voice full of warning. "If you hurt Evelyn, I won't let you get away with it." "And who do you think you are?" Sean shot back, not even sparing Marcus a glance. He roughly pushed Marcus aside but continued to cling tightly to Evelyn. The tension hung in the air as passersby paused, casting curious glances at the scene unfolding near the elevator. Whispers and murmurs began to spread. Evelyn trembled with anger. She tried several times to pull away, but Sean's iron-like grip held her fast. Finally, she'd had enough. Taking a deep breath, she glared at him coldly, her voice calm yet icy. "Sean, what's the point of clinging like this?" "Clinging?" Sean laughed softly, as if she had said something amusing. "Who said I'm clinging? Don't forget, we're still a couple. You blocked me without a word and then threw yourself into another man's arms. Is that appropriate?" "Couple?" Evelyn repeated with a scornful laugh, her gaze sharpening from mere coldness to a piercing glare. She thought back to her return from studying abroad, filled with hope and the belief that Sean was her one true partner. Back then, he had seemed so gentle, so kind, so thoughtful—the ideal companion. But that night's phone call shattered her illusions. It made her see clearly that, from the beginning, Sean had only ever used her. His words were so cold, so devoid of emotion, like a blade cutting into her. And now he had the audacity to invoke their past relationship? "Sean, surely you haven't forgotten," Evelyn said, her smile tinged with bitterness. "We ended long ago." In that carefully orchestrated drama Sean had played out, Evelyn was left deeply wounded, ultimately exiting in humiliation. And now he was forcing her into yet another humiliating situation. Why? "Ended?" Sean sneered, refusing to loosen his hold. He suddenly pulled Evelyn into his arms. Evelyn felt overwhelmed by Sean's presence, as though his very breath was suffocating her. She instinctively tried to escape, but there was nowhere to go. Clenching her fists, she stared coldly at him. "What do you want?" Sean's lips curled into a mocking smile. "How about this: instead of begging Nathaniel, you could beg me. After all, my family's doctor can cure Sarah. As long as you stay by my side, I'll reluctantly agree to save her." "Stay by your side?" Evelyn's pupils narrowed slightly. She struggled to resist the urge to slap him. Instead, her hands clenched into fists, her gaze icy as she spat out her words, one at a time. "You're dreaming!" Even if every man on earth disappeared, she would never go back to Sean. The saying "a good horse never goes back to graze on old pasture" didn't even begin to apply to someone like Sean. Sean's face twitched, and his expression turned dark. He tightened his grip, his teeth gritting as he growled, "What did you say?" "I said—" "Wow, Mr. Landon, that performance was so dramatic I almost felt like clapping." A voice behind them cut in, interrupting the confrontation. Evelyn stiffened, instinctively turning her head to look. She saw Nathaniel walking toward them, dressed impeccably in a sharp suit. His expression was calm, and he was accompanied by a refined-looking man in a doctor's coat.
