Chapter 11: The Moon's Forgotten Vault

629 Words
Selene ran until the forest swallowed the temple bells. Only then did she stop. She braced both hands against the rough trunk of an ancient pine, struggling to catch her breath. The image refused to leave her mind. Lucian's blood. Bright. Impossible. Because of me. The thought repeated itself like a curse. Perhaps... It always had been one. She closed her eyes. For the first time in years... She wished someone would tell her she was wrong. The Moon Temple remained silent after her departure. The villagers slowly returned to their homes, speaking in hushed voices. Fear lingered in every glance cast toward the mountain. Lucian remained where Selene had left him. His gaze never left the path disappearing into the forest. You'll find her." The High Priestess stepped beside him. "But not tonight." Lucian finally looked at her. "She believes she's protecting me." "She does." "And she's wrong." The old woman didn't answer immediately. Instead, she studied the faint silver thread stretching into the darkness after Selene. "I pray she is." It wasn't the answer he expected. "My Lady." Elder Rowan approached quietly. "The people are frightened." "They should be." He hesitated. "Then the stories..." "The stories remember more than we do." The words settled heavily over the temple steps. The High Priestess turned back toward Lucian. "Come with me." She led him deep beneath the temple. Past prayer halls untouched for generations. Past doors sealed with ancient moon symbols. Finally... She stopped before a weathered stone entrance almost hidden by time itself. There were no guards. No locks. Only silence. She rested one hand against the stone. It opened with a slow, echoing groan. Cold air drifted from the darkness beyond. It smelled of old parchment... And forgotten centuries. The chamber was smaller than Lucian expected. There were no mountains of treasure. No legendary weapons. Only shelves. Thousands of ancient records rested quietly beneath layers of dust. At the very center stood a single stone pedestal. Upon it lay a white leather book. Untouched by dust. Untouched by time. "This place..." The High Priestess whispered. "...is the Moon's Forgotten Vault." Lucian stepped closer. "What is it?" "A place for truths the world refused to lose." He frowned. "And yet no one speaks of it." "That is because no one remembers it." She gently opened the white book. Its pages were empty. Every one of them. Lucian looked at her. "Blank?" "They weren't." She carefully turned another page. Still blank. "My predecessor believed these pages once held an entire history." "What happened to it?" The old woman's fingers lingered against the parchment. "We don't know." Her voice softened. "We only know something powerful enough to erase names..." "...was not powerful enough to erase the memory that names once existed." Lucian stared at the empty pages. For reasons he couldn't explain... They frightened him more than any written warning could have. Without warning... The room grew colder. Neither of them moved. One blank page trembled. A faint silver glow spread across the parchment. Slowly... Letters began appearing. Not written by ink. By light. The High Priestess stepped back. Her breathing caught. The first line finished. She has returned. Silence. Lucian read it again. Then again. Returned? Before either of them could speak... A second line appeared beneath the first. Do not lose her again. The glow faded. The page became still once more. Lucian looked toward the High Priestess. "You've seen this before." Her eyes remained fixed on the book. "No." Her voice trembled for the first time. "I've spent forty years praying it would never happen." The room fell silent. Somewhere beyond the mountain... The moon disappeared briefly behind drifting clouds. Neither of them noticed. Because both were still staring at two sentences... ...that should never have existed.
