The forest woke before they did.
Morning sunlight spilled through the branches in long ribbons of gold.
Somewhere nearby, a stream laughed over smooth stones.
Selene opened her eyes slowly.
For one peaceful heartbeat...
She forgot where she was.
Then she saw Lucian asleep a few feet away.
The memory of everything returned.
The curse.
The village.
The bond.
Him.
A strand of dark hair had fallen across his forehead.
She almost reached for it.
Almost.
Instead, she hugged her knees and watched the fire fade into glowing embers.
"You're staring again."
Lucian's voice was rough with sleep.
Selene looked away immediately.
"I wasn't."
"You were."
"I was making sure you were alive."
He smiled.
"I'm glad someone is."
She rolled her eyes.
"You make it very difficult to worry properly."
"I've noticed."
They resumed walking after sunrise.
Without thinking...
Selene matched her pace to his.
Neither walked ahead anymore.
Neither mentioned it.
Sometimes the most important changes arrived without asking permission.
By midday...
The forest became quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
The birds stopped singing.
The insects disappeared.
Even the wind seemed to hesitate between the trees.
Lucian slowed.
"So it's not just me."
Selene shook her head.
"I hear it too."
The silence pressed against them from every direction.
Heavy.
Watching.
A squirrel darted across the path.
Then froze.
Its ears twitched.
Without warning, it fled into the undergrowth.
Moments later, a herd of deer burst through the trees in the opposite direction.
They weren't running from wolves.
They were running from something neither Selene nor Lucian could see.
Lucian's hand rested lightly on the hilt of his sword.
He didn't draw it.
Not yet.
"What do animals know that we don't?"
Selene whispered.
"I intend to find out."
His answer was calm.
Too calm.
She knew him well enough now to recognize what it meant.
He was worried.
The silence followed them for nearly an hour.
Then, as suddenly as it had arrived...
It lifted.
Birdsong returned.
The breeze stirred the branches.
Somewhere in the distance, a woodpecker began tapping against a tree.
The forest exhaled.
So did Selene.
Near sunset, they discovered the ruins of an old watchtower.
Most of it had long since surrendered to time.
Only broken walls and scattered stones remained.
"I'll gather firewood."
Lucian disappeared into the trees.
Selene wandered through the ruins alone.
Vines covered nearly every stone.
Except one.
Half buried beneath fallen leaves stood a weathered slab carved with seven circles surrounding a crescent moon.
Her heartbeat quickened.
The same symbol.
The Moon Temple.
The Forgotten Vault.
She brushed away the dirt.
One circle had been completely erased.
Another carried a thin c***k.
The remaining five were untouched.
She traced the c***k with trembling fingers.
The stone was ice cold.
Then...
A whisper.
Not behind her.
Not in front of her.
Inside her mind.
Too late.
Selene jerked backward.
Her breath caught.
The clearing was empty.
Only the wind moved.
She pressed both hands against her temples.
"Who's there?"
Nothing.
Only silence.
But somehow...
The silence felt different now.
As though it had answered.
She hurried back toward the fire.
Lucian looked up immediately.
One glance at her face was enough.
"What happened?"
She wanted to say, "Nothing."
She almost did.
Then she remembered something.
He had never once called her a burden.
Never once looked at her with fear.
So she told him the truth.
"I heard a voice."
He didn't ask whether she was imagining it.
He didn't laugh.
He didn't doubt her.
He simply stepped closer.
"What did it say?"
Selene swallowed.
"It only said two words."
Lucian waited.
"'Too late.'"
For the first time since leaving Ashwood...
Neither of them spoke.
The fire crackled softly between them.
Beyond its light...
The forest watched in silence.
And hidden beneath centuries of moss...
The cracked stone waited.
Patiently.
As though it had been expecting them all along.
