The forest had not forgiven them.
It watched.
Every towering pine.
Every shifting shadow.
Every whisper of wind between the branches.
As though the woods themselves knew something Selene did not.
Lucian remained where he was.
He had made no attempt to move closer.
No attempt to touch her.
He simply stayed.
For someone else...
It would have meant nothing.
For Selene...
It meant everything.
"You should leave."
Her voice was barely louder than the wind.
"I know."
He didn't move.
She looked up.
"If you know... why are you still here?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"Because you asked me to leave."
She frowned.
"I don't understand."
"I don't think you wanted me to."
The words caught her off guard.
She opened her mouth to deny them.
Nothing came out.
Because somewhere beneath the fear...
He was right.
She wanted him to leave.
She wanted him to stay.
She didn't know which frightened her more.
Moonlight spilled across the silver thread connecting them.
Neither of them looked at it.
Neither needed to.
Its presence filled every silence between them.
Selene wrapped Lucian's cloak tighter around herself.
It still carried his scent.
Cedar.
Rain.
Smoke from a distant fire.
Comfort.
The realization startled her.
She couldn't remember the last time she'd associated another person with comfort.
Lucian quietly studied the clearing.
The rogues had retreated too easily.
Experienced wolves didn't abandon prey without reason.
Unless...
They had already accomplished their mission.
His gaze drifted to Selene.
No.
They hadn't come to kill her.
They had come to see her.
Or perhaps...
To confirm something.
That thought unsettled him more than the attack itself.
"You've been quiet."
Selene's voice broke the silence.
"I'm thinking."
"About the rogues?"
"About why they smiled."
She looked at him sharply.
"So you noticed."
"I notice more than people think."
For the first time...
A faint smile touched her lips.
"So do I."
The smile disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
But Lucian had seen it.
It changed her entire face.
For one brief moment...
She looked like the woman she might have become if the world had been kinder.
"I owe you an apology."
Selene blinked.
"What for?"
"I followed you."
"You were trying to help."
"I still ignored your choice."
She stared at him.
No one had ever apologized for crossing one of her boundaries.
Most people either avoided her...
Or decided what was best for her.
"You don't have to apologize."
"I wanted to."
Another unfamiliar feeling settled in her chest.
Respect.
He wasn't treating her like something fragile.
He wasn't treating her like something cursed.
He was treating her like an equal.
A distant howl echoed through the forest.
Not close.
Far away.
Answered by another.
Then another.
Lucian's expression darkened.
"They're gathering."
Selene felt her stomach tighten.
"The rogues?"
He nodded once.
"They aren't retreating."
"They're reporting."
The words sent a chill through her.
Reporting.
To whom?
Without warning...
The silver thread pulsed.
A warm sensation spread through Selene's chest.
Not painful.
Gentle.
She instinctively looked at Lucian.
He was already looking at her.
Neither spoke.
Yet somehow...
The silence no longer felt empty.
It felt shared.
That frightened her.
She took one step backward.
The warmth faded.
Lucian felt it disappear immediately.
Neither mentioned it.
Both understood.
Distance weakened the bond.
Closeness strengthened it.
The realization settled heavily between them.
A raven burst from the trees above.
It circled once.
Twice.
Then disappeared into the darkness.
Lucian watched it go.
"Someone's watching us."
Selene followed his gaze.
"What makes you think that?"
"The rogues."
"The voice."
"The raven."
He looked back into the endless forest.
"None of this happened by chance."
The night grew colder.
Somewhere beyond the trees...
Hidden where neither wolf nor moonlight could reach...
An old man opened his eyes.
Before him rested seven ancient stone seals.
One of them had begun to glow.
He smiled.
"One has awakened."
His fingers brushed the remaining six.
"Soon..."
he whispered,
"They will all remember."
The forest answered with silence.
But the silence no longer felt empty.
It felt like something...
was waiting.
