The Hybrid's Second Chance Mate

Chapter 2: Xavier

I was in the car with my parents heading to the royal pack. I was not a fan of meetings and my wolf hates being locked up in a room. “Son, relax, you will be fine. Just breath and remember that you will be taking our place next year since I will be handing over the pack to you. You will need to start attending these meetings.” I sighed as my father was right. I need to keep a level head. I am not a fan of vampires since we have been recently attacked by them. I know that my parents know the King and Queen but it still makes me anxious. My mother turns around to look at me. “Xavier, you and Cole are able to go for a run around the lands if you need to once we arrive. I know how much your wolf loves to be in nature. Plus, you may even be able to meet Lucien and Aurora’s daughter.” I sigh and shake my head. “Mother can you please not try and set me up with any females. I will find my mate when the time is right.” I tell her.

When we arrive in front of the castle my wolf starts to pace. “what’s the matter with you? You are going to give me a headache” I tell him. “Someone is going to happen. I can sense it.” He tells me as he retreats to the back of my mind. When I get out of the car, I see Cole waiting for me. I walk over to him and nod towards the trees. We both walk over and I can’t keep thinking about what my wolf told me.

“Xav, what is wrong with you. You are very quiet” Cole asked me. I look at him and I stop by a tree. “I don’t know Cole. My wolf is on edge more than before and says that something is going to happen.” I tell him. He shakes his head and goes to shift. I shift and follow after him. We run for a couple hours and it does help take the edge off. I link Cole to let him know that we should head back. Cole stops moving and starts to sniff the air. “Xav, can you smell that?” he asked me. I stop to sniff the air but smell othe wolves and a few vampires. “I don’t smell anything but other wolves” I tell him. Cole’s wolf starts to whine and then tries to track down the smell but then we get a link from my parents. “Come on Cole, we have to go” I tell him. He whines again but nods his head.

When we arrive back, I shift first and wait for Cole. Cole walks out of the tree line and I can tell that something is bothering him. “Cole what happened back there?” I can tell that it is driving his crazy that he could not track that scent. “Xav, I think my mate is here. I was drawn to the smell and I couldn’t help but what to track it to find out who it belonged to.” I smiled thinking about my best friend finding his mate. I walk over to him and pulled him into a hug. “Cole, I promise you, we will find your mate before we leave.” We pull apart and make our way to where we are staying for the next week.

Once we get inside, we see my parents talking with King Lucien and Queen Aurora. “Good evening, my King and Queen” I say with a bow. My mother smiles and can tell something is up. “Come my son and have a seat. Tell me what you and Cole worked up”. I look to Cole and then to my mother about ready to speak but Cole beats me to it. “Luna, I think I caught the scent of my mate while we were out running.” Cole tells my mother. It was quiet and then my mother rushed to Cole and pulled him into a hug. “Cole, sweetheart, I am so happy for you” she says with tears in her eyes. Then it was Queen Aurora that hugged Cole next. “Beta Cole, I am so happy you have found your mate. I will do whatever I can to help you find her” Cole starts to laugh. “Queen Aurora, I am into men and my mate is male.” We all start to laugh and even the royals join in. “Maybe the future Alpha will find his mate too” Lucien said with a smile.

I look to him and then to my patents. “Thank you for the kind words but I am waiting for my mate to come to me. I have been searching for the last 5 years and have found nothing. I have to start preparing to take over the pack by year end and since I have been gone for 5 years, I have a lot to catch up on.” I tell everyone. I then bow and excuse myself for the evening. I walk up to my room and head to bed. “She is close by and special” my wolf tells me. “Mav, if she is here why haven’t we been able to scent her?” I ask him. He is quiet for a minute before he speaks again. “Mate is close by; we must find her” Maverick then retreats to back of my head but I can still feel him pacing. It’s going to be a long night.

I wake up to banging on my door. “Come in” I growl out. I barely slept thanks to Maverick pacing all night. As I was sitting up in bed Cole walks into the room dressed and ready for the day. “Xav, get up and get ready. We are having breakfast with the royal family.” I groaned at the thought but knew my parents were friends with the royals. “Fine, give me 5 minutes and I will be out” I tell Cole as I climb out of bed. I get ready and make my way out of my room. I find Cole waiting for me in the hallway. We make our way to the dining room and I sense something. I can feel something pulling me to the doors. Maverick starts to pace again and is excited. I look to Cole and see him standing still, staring at the door.

“Cole what is wrong with you?” I asked him. He looked to me and back to the door. “Xav, I feel something pulling me towards those doors. I can also pick up the scent from yesterday but it’s mixed with something else. What’s the matter with you?” “Cole, I think she is on the other side of that door. I feel a pull too.” He looks at me with shock on his face. We both take deep breaths and open the doors. As soon I do, I catch the most wonderful scent. I take another inhale and growl out "Mate" at the same time as Cole. The most beautiful women I have ever seen is standing next to another man with her hand on his arm. I see him look to her and then he looks towards Cole. She leans close to his ear and whispers something and then takes off out of the room. I feel my heart sink as I watch her run away. Maverick is howling in my head and urging me to chase after her.

Cole leans over to me “Xav, there has to be a reason. Take a breath and let’s find out” I nod my head but keep it low. I walk over to my parents and sit down next to them. Cole walks over to his mate and then embrace each other. Then all we hear is a growl. I look over and see Cole has the male wolf’s wrist to his nose. “Why do you smell like a female has been over you?” Queen Aurora stands up and grabs everyone’s attention. “Beta Cole, your mate is a close friend and my daughters Beta.” So, my mate is her daughter. I am mated to the princess who probably doesn’t want to mated to me. I sigh again and feel my father place his hand on my shoulder. “Son there has to be a reason why she ran” he said. I nod my head and look back over to Cole and the royal beta.

The King then stands up next and makes his way over to me. “Alpha Xavier, my daughter has been through something that has scarred her heart. Please do not hold it against her.” He looked at me and then to the queen. I can see sadness in their eyes. The queen cleared her throat. “Cole, I know that you have questions and I am sure that Keenan can explain to you why you smell someone else on him but right now I need him to check on my daughter.” She says with a pleading voice.

“Cole, I will explain everything to you but I have to check on my best friend. She is not alright and I have to get to her to calm her down.” Keenan says. Cole nods his head but pulls him into a kiss before letting him go. “I will be waiting for an explanation but go tend to the princess.” Keenan smiles and then takes off out of the dining room. I try to stand up to follow after him but the king keeps me still. “Please Xavier let her process this. I know that you are a good man and will be a good mate for her but she…” the king looks away and I can see a tear in his eye. The queen nods her head and sits down. “Xavier, you are Skylar’s second chance mate.”

I am shocked hearing that. I have so many questions and I have a feeling that they will not share her story with us. “I can see that you have questions and I am sure that Skylar will share everything with you but we can share one thing with you.” Queen Aurora says. Then I look up to King Lucien wondering what happened. “Skylar’s first mate was killed protecting her 10 years ago. We don’t even know the whole story of what happened. All we know is that she made it back to the pack boarders covered in blood and some pretty bad wounds. Then all a sudden she was screaming and crying out in pain before she passed out.”

I feel heartbroken for what she went through and Maverick was whining at the thought of her pain. He wanted to comfort our mate. I looked to the queen and then the king. “Thank you for sharing that with me. I will do anything for her. I have been waiting for 5 years to find her and if I have to wait a little longer I can.” I tell them. They nod their heads. “Xavier, I know that you want to run after her but please give her space. Wait till after you and your father have your meeting with Lucian.Once you are done, I can take you to where she likes to be in the afternoon.” I thank Queen Aurora and start to eat the food that was in front of me.
