Chapter 5: Skylar

I feel warm and try to move. I hear someone calling my name softly and open my eyes. I see Keenan next to me and Cole in the corner of the room. I try to sit up but I can’t move my other arm. I turn to look at my other arm and see Xavier sleeping holding onto my arm. I smile at him and then remember everything that happened. I look back over to Keenan.” What happened after I blacked out?” I could see the tears in his eyes. Cole gets up and walks over to him. Cole then pulls Keenan into his arms and kisses the top of his head. “Sky, you almost didn’t make it. You were in really bad shape. Xavier was the one who was able to help save you.” Cole said. I looked to Keenan and he nodded his head. “How did that happen?” I asked. “We forced you to feed sweetheart.” My mother says as she walks into the room. I look at her and then down to my sleeping mate. I see the bandage around his arm and knew what happened. It was the same thing that Keenan did 10 years ago.

My mother walks over to Xavier to wake him up. “Xavier, it’s time to wake up dear. You need to eat something and get cleaned up.” He groaned and buried his face more into my hand. I chuckled. I moved my other hand to his head and started to run my fingers threw his hair. He sighed out in content and started to stir. I see him pick his head up and look at me. He rubs his eyes and then shouts that I am awake. He pulls me into his lap and hugs me.

He buries his nose into my neck and inhales. “Sky I am so happy that you are awake” he says as I feel tears on my shoulder. I look to everyone in the room and then to my mother. She smiles and tells everyone to leave. Once the door closes, we were alone. “Xavier, its ok. I am going to be ok.” I tell him as I was rubbing his back. “You could have died and then I would have never had someone to love” he says. I smile at his comment and try to pull him up. “Xavier don’t say that. You never know what the future hold for you. Plus, fate has a reason for everything.” I tell him.

He kisses my cheek and then nuzzles into my neck again. “Sky can you forgive me?” he asked me. He looks up to me when I don’t answer him. I sigh. “Xavier, you have done nothing wrong. I should be thanking you for saving my life.” I tell him. Xavier pulls my hand up to his cheek and rubs his face on my hand. “Sky, I would do it again if it means I can have another day with you.” He paused and looked me in the eyes. “Sky, I want to be with you. I want you as my mate. It was a lot to process and I had a lot of questions that your parents were able to help answer while you were sleeping.” He tells me.

“Xavier, I want this to work between us but I have a lot to work through. It may take some time before I am ready to be marked” I tell him. He nods his head. “I understand Sky. I will wait for however long it takes you.” I smile at him. “Thank you, Xavier, for understanding. I know this is a lot and having a hybrid as your mate is not going to be easy.” I tell him. He pulls me closer to him and I laid my head on his chest. I snuggled into him and aloud myself to relax for the first time in years.

After some time, my stomach growled. Xavier sat up and chuckled. “I guess I should get you some food” he said I nodded my head but before he could help me back into bed, my mother walks in with food in tow. I also see the cup that has my daily blood in it. I sigh knowing I am not going to be able handle it. She hands me the cup but I shake my head and place the cup on the stand. “Sky, you know that you have to at least drink some of it.” She tells me. I know that she means well but I always get sick when I drink it. I give her a look and my mother sighs before giving up. She hands us each a tray of food and then leaves the room.

After we were done eating, I kept looking at the cup. “Sky, it doesn’t bother me if you need to drink that.” He tells me. I sigh and look to him. “It’s not that I don’t want to drink it, I just can’t keep it down.” I try to drink but I get sick every time. I am lucky if I can keep any of it down. “What can you keep down?” he asked me. “The only time I am able to drink anything is when I go out hunting.” I tell him but I was not is the best shape to do that. I can see him thinking and then he gets up to leave the room before I question him what he is planning.

I lay back down and close my eyes. I hear the door open and close again. When I open my eyes, I see Cole and Keenan holding a bag. “Time to get up and gets dressed Sky” Keenan says. He walks over to help out of bed. “Cole are you able to help. I am not going to be able to do to this myself.” Keenan asks Cole. He nods his head and locks the door. Keenan goes to remove my hospital clothes while I lean on Cole. They help get me cleaned up and dressed before Cole walks over to the door and opens it. There I see the doctor standing. “I want her back in her room after you are done. She still needs rest but can do that at home.” He says with a smile.

We walk out of the hospital wing and head outside. “What are you two doing and where did Xavier go?” I asked them. They both smile and continue to help me walk to towards the trees. Then I hear a stick break. A large, jet-black wolf emerges from the trees. It walks up next me and nuzzles my hand. Cole chuckles and that earns him a growl. “Sky, this is Maverick. He is Xavier’s wolf. He is going to take you hunting” Cole tells me. I look to him and place my hand on his head, which earns me a purr. Cole and Keenan help he up on Maverick’s back. He stands up and takes off through the forest. I snuggle on his back as he maneuvered through the forest. We can to a clearing and spotted a deer. I tapped his shoulder to let me down and lowered himself to the ground. After I climbed off his back, he went to move closer to the deer. I watched from a tree stump that I am sitting on, while Maverick stocks the deer.

It all happens so fast but he was able to catch the deer. He trotted back over to me and then places the deer in front of me. I smile at him and move closer to the deer. He sits down waiting for me to drink from the deer. I was nervous about drinking in front of him but my mom was right. I needed to drink to gain back my strength. I look up at him. “Can you turn around please?” I asked him. He huffs and but turns around. I go back to the deer and let my fang extend as I bite into the deer. I drink until there is nothing left. I then sit on the ground and try to clean myself up a little bit.

Maverick turned around and walked over to me. He licked my face and I chuckled. Maverick looked to the deer and licked his lips. “Are you hungry?” I asked him. He nodded his head but looked to me first. “I am finished. If you don’t eat the deer, then we can bring it back and have to kitchen staff use to meat to make some stew and steaks with.” He yipped and then walked over to the deer. He nuzzled the abdomen and the clawed at it. I laughed at him trying to be careful. I got up and walked over to him and helped cut open the abdomen and pulled out the guts. Maverick started to sort through the organ and found the liver. He ate the liver and then went to lay down next me. He started to lick his paws clean and I laid back into him.

I don’t know how long we stayed that way but I could stay like this all day. I get a link from my father. “How are you feeling dear?” “I am feeling better dad. Xavier took me hunting and caught a deer for me. There is meat left over and we will bring it back with us for the cooks.” “That is one heck of a young man.” “He really is.” I tell him. “We will be back shortly” “Ok be safe sweetheart” he tells me before I end the link. I look over to see Maverick looking at me. “It’s time to head back. We can take the deer with us” I tell him. He stands up to stretch and then lowers himself to the ground for me to climb on. Once I am on his back, he stands up and grabs the deer with him mouth. Then we head back to the packhouse.

Once we are through the tree line, I can see Cole waiting with a pair of clothes in his hands. Maverick walks up next to him drops the deer from his mouth and then lowers himself to the ground for me to climb off. “Welcome back Sky and Alpha” Cole says with a bow. I smile at him then take the clothes from his hands and walk over to Maverick. “Take these and go change. I want to speak with Xavier” I ask Maverick. He whines and then nuzzles the side of my face before he takes the clothes and goes behind a tree.

Xavier POV

That was wonderful being able to run with Skylar on my back. I can still the feel the sparks as I shift back and get dressed. I still can’t believe Maverick was excited to help out mate hunt. “Mate needed help and you heard her” he says in a relaxed tone. “Your right Mav. Thanks for the idea.” I tell him and feel him relax more. This is the most relaxed he has been in a long time. As I walk out of the trees, I can hear Sky talking. “It was nice of Xavier to take me hunting. I haven’t been able to drink that much in a long time.” She tells Keenan and Cole. “Sky, I am glad that you are feeling better but please take it easy. You are not at your full strength yet.” Keenan tells her. I walk up and wrap my arms around her waist before I look to Keenan. “I will make sure she takes it easy.”

Keenan smiles at me and then nods towards the doors. I see both of our parents waiting for us. Aurora steps forward and walks to us. “Sky how are you feeling?” she asked my mate. “I am feeling better thanks to Xavier.” She tells her mom. Aurora smiles and then her face turns serious. “Sky, we need to ask you some questions about what happened. We can talk in your father’s office since it will be able to hold everyone.” She nods her head and I let go of her waist. She then grabs my hand and laces our fingers together. I can tell that she is nervous but have no idea why she is nervous.
