Echoes of Blood
The moon hung low and heavy over Ravaryn, its crimson hue casting an ominous glow across the land. It was a blood moon - a rare event that the old tales said could awaken ancient powers slumbering in the veins of those chosen by destiny. Tonight, Tom felt it stirring within him.
The council chambers, hidden deep within the Stonewood Fortress, were filled with hushed whispers and worried glances. The Elders sat at a long, weathered table, their expressions grim. Tom stood before them, heart pounding against his ribs.
Elder Maelis, her silver hair braided tightly around her horns, leaned forward. “You are aware, Tom, that tonight changes everything.”
Tom nodded, fists clenched at his sides. He had felt the shift the moment the sun fell. It was as if the blood within him had started singing a song older than memory itself.
“We have long awaited the Awakening,” Elder Vorn rumbled, his voice like thunder rolling over distant mountains. “But with it comes great danger.”
Tom’s eyes darted to the shadowed figure at the back of the room - Sylara. She wore her usual impassive mask, but he could sense her tension, the tightness in her aura.
“It’s not just me,” Tom said, voice steady despite the storm inside him. “The Varkai blood runs in many veins. Others might rise… not all of them on our side.”
A heavy silence fell over the chamber.
“You must be ready to lead,” Maelis said finally. “Ready to fight.”
Tom hesitated. Lead? He barely understood the extent of what was happening to him. He was a warrior, not a king. But then he thought of Valtor, the black-eyed betrayer, and of the threat looming over all of Ravaryn. If he didn’t rise, who would?
“I’ll do it,” he said, the words tasting of iron and resolve.
A murmur of approval swept through the Elders.
“Then your training begins tonight,” Maelis said. “Come.”
Outside the fortress, under the bleeding moon, Tom followed Sylara into the sacred grounds known as the Hollow. Here, the ground itself thrummed with ancient magic. The trees whispered secrets only the Varkai could hear.
Sylara turned to face him, her blade flashing in the red moonlight.
“Tonight, we awaken what sleeps inside you,” she said, eyes glinting with a wild, untamed fire. “Tonight, you stop being a boy bound by fear and become the wolf born for war.”
Tom drew his blade, the weight of it familiar, comforting. Around them, the Hollow pulsed with anticipation.
He would not back down. Not tonight.
Tom squared his shoulders, lowering himself into a battle stance. His muscles thrummed with tension, a coiled force waiting to explode. Across from him, Sylara moved with predatory grace, circling him like a shadow.
"Focus," she barked. "Feel the blood inside you. Listen to it."
Tom closed his eyes for a heartbeat, tuning out the world around him - the chirping insects, the whispering trees, even Sylara’s steady breathing. Deep within, he sensed it: a primal pulse, an ancient drumbeat calling to him from the marrow of his bones.
When he opened his eyes again, they gleamed gold.
Sylara smiled fiercely. "Good. Now fight."
She lunged.
Tom barely had time to raise his sword, the clash of steel against steel ringing through the Hollow. Sparks flew as Sylara pressed him hard, her attacks merciless and fast. Tom staggered back, gritting his teeth, instincts roaring to life.
He ducked under a sweeping strike, twisted, and countered with a s***h aimed at her ribs. She blocked easily but nodded in approval.
"Better," she said.
They danced across the Hollow, each strike sharpening Tom's senses further. His body moved faster than his mind could track, a rhythm older than training, older than memory. His blood howled for battle, and he answered without fear.
A sudden blur from Sylara's side - she flipped over him, landing lightly behind him. Tom reacted on pure instinct, spinning, slashing upward. Their blades locked again, close enough for him to see the fierce pride burning in her eyes.
"You are waking up," she whispered.
But the moment of triumph was short-lived.
A sharp, cold sensation rippled through the ground beneath them. Tom froze, feeling it in his bones: something unnatural was stirring nearby.
Sylara’s face darkened. "We're not alone."

Sylara’s face darkened. "We're not alone."
From the darkness of the woods, figures emerged - cloaked in shadows, eyes gleaming crimson. Rogues. Those who had embraced the darker urges of the Varkai bloodline, selling their souls for more power.
Tom tightened his grip on his sword. Sylara stepped beside him, her blade ready.
"This," she said grimly, "is your true test."
The rogues charged, snarling, their forms twisting between human and wolf in grotesque flashes. Tom roared, the power inside him surging up in a flood. His muscles expanded, claws burst from his fingers, and a savage growl tore from his throat.
He met the first rogue head-on, blades flashing, claws slashing, instincts guiding him more surely than thought.
The Hollow erupted into chaos. beside him, her blade ready.

The Hollow erupted into chaos.
Tom's blade caught the rogue across the chest, sending it sprawling into the undergrowth with a yelp. Another came at him from the side - Sylara was already there, moving with lethal grace, her sword a silver blur that cleaved through the night.
Tom barely had time to breathe before two more rogues lunged at him together. He pivoted, letting the instinct within guide his movements. His claws slashed one across the face, sending it screaming backward. The other rogue grabbed him, snapping jaws aiming for his throat.
Tom's blood burned hotter, vision narrowing. With a snarl, he slammed his forehead into the rogue's face, breaking bone, and hurled it to the ground. Power crackled under his skin, a new surge he barely understood.
Sylara fought beside him like a storm, each movement precise and deadly. But there were too many. The rogues kept coming, their hunger twisting them into monsters. Tom felt his strength waning, his breath coming faster.
No, he thought fiercely. I am not done.
From deep inside him, something responded.
A howl erupted from his chest - not human, not fully wolf. It shook the Hollow, vibrating through the trees and into the ground. The rogues froze for a fraction of a second, terror flashing in their red eyes.
And then Tom changed.
Not fully wolf, not fully man - something else. His body grew taller, thicker, muscles knotting with raw strength. His hands became claws, his face elongated into something feral. Golden fire burned in his eyes, and when he moved, it was with unstoppable force.
He tore through the rogues like a whirlwind.
Each s***h, each roar, each furious strike sent enemies scattering. Some tried to run. Tom let them go. Others fought on blindly, only to fall before his rage.
In minutes, the Hollow was silent again, except for the rasp of his own breathing.
Slowly, the primal energy faded, and Tom stumbled, dropping to one knee. The ground felt solid and real under his palms. His body trembled, muscles protesting the strain.
Sylara approached him cautiously, but her eyes gleamed with fierce pride.
"You did it," she said, voice rough. "You woke it up."
Tom looked up at her, still panting. "Woke... what?"
She crouched beside him, resting a hand on his shoulder.
"The Last Howl," she whispered. "The blood of kings and monsters. It's inside you, Tom. And now, so is their power."
Tom stared at his clawed hands, at the destruction around him, at the golden glow slowly fading from his vision.
He had survived.
But at what cost?
Far beyond the Hollow, deeper in the ancient woods, something had heard his howl.
Something older. Something far worse than rogues.
And it was waking up too.
