CHAPTER 23:The Dance

574 Words
Soft music began filling the ballroom. The elegant melody drifted through the grand hall as couples slowly stepped onto the polished marble dance floor. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting warm golden light across the room. Conversations gradually faded as the orchestra took over. Clara looked at Ethan calmly. "Dance with me." Ethan blinked. "I don't know how." Without saying another word, Clara extended her hand. "Then learn." Ethan stared at her delicate hand for a moment before letting out a quiet laugh. "I'll probably step on your feet." "Then I'll forgive you." Her answer made him smile. He slowly reached forward and took her hand. The moment their fingers touched— Something strange happened. The noise of the ballroom seemed to disappear. The pressure of being the heir to Kingston Corporation. The weight of revenge. The endless business meetings. For the first time since becoming rich, Ethan felt genuinely calm again. Not pressured. Not angry. Not empty. Just... Peaceful. Clara gently guided him onto the dance floor. At first, Ethan's movements were stiff and awkward, causing Clara to laugh softly when he accidentally stepped in the wrong direction. "I told you," he whispered with embarrassment. "I'm terrible." "You're improving already," she teased. "You're a terrible liar." "I prefer the word encouraging." Both of them laughed. Around them, countless guests watched with admiration. Whispers spread through the ballroom. "They look perfect together." "So that's Kingston's young master..." "They're like royalty." Even Ethan and Clara seemed unaware of the attention they were receiving. To them, it felt as though they were the only two people in the room. As the music slowed, Clara leaned slightly closer. "You still don't trust people easily, do you?" Ethan's smile faded into something more complicated. "Can you blame me?" Clara gently shook her head. "No." "I've been betrayed by the people I loved most," Ethan admitted quietly. "It's hard to believe anyone's kindness comes without a price." Clara looked at him with understanding rather than pity. "Then don't force yourself." He looked surprised. "What do you mean?" "Trust isn't given overnight," she said softly. "It's built one moment at a time." For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The silence between them felt warm instead of uncomfortable. Then Clara whispered, "You know... my grandfather and yours arranged this marriage because they believed we'd save each other." Ethan frowned slightly. "Save each other from what?" Clara lifted her eyes to meet his. "Loneliness." Those words struck Ethan harder than he expected. Because despite all his money... Despite the luxury cars... The private office... The respect that suddenly surrounded him... He still felt alone most of the time. Clara seemed to understand that loneliness without him having to explain it. She smiled gently. "You don't have to carry everything by yourself anymore." Ethan looked at her in silence. For the first time in years, someone wasn't standing beside him because of his money, his status, or his power. She was simply there. As the song came to an end, applause echoed throughout the ballroom. Neither Ethan nor Clara realized that, across the room, Vanessa had been watching the entire dance with tears filling her eyes. She had never seen Ethan smile like that. Not once during the three years they had been together. And in that heartbreaking moment... She finally understood. She hadn't just lost a boyfriend. She had lost the man who could have been the greatest love of her life.
