Chapter 2

The next morning, Chloe arrived at the shop earlier than usual, the name Ethan Thorne still lingering in her mind. Tech billionaire, CEO of Thorne Industries. She scrolled through the morning news, major headlines all revolving around his multi-billion dollar deals, pictures of him appearing impeccably dressed at high-profile events. It was hard to believe that this man was the same person who had grimaced at her espresso and then quietly savored her "Awakening." That thought made Chloe chuckle. Surely, Ethan Thorne never imagined that a small coffee shop could contain such an "awakening," both literally and figuratively. She wondered, would he come back? Or was that rare moment of peace just a moment of weakness for a whale lost in a tiny stream? At exactly 7:30 AM, the chimes jingled again. And there he was, Ethan Thorne, dressed in a perfect charcoal suit, walking into the shop as if he were striding across a stock exchange floor. His eyes swept quickly across the empty tables before landing on Chloe, who was arranging ceramic cups. "Good morning," Chloe said, her usual smile on her face, but with a new hint of mischief this time. "Back so soon, Mr. Billionaire?" Ethan paused slightly, a flicker of surprise in his gray eyes. Clearly, he hadn't expected her to know. "You... you know?" "News about you is all over the internet; it's hard not to know," Chloe shrugged. "Besides, I don't live under a rock." A faint, almost imperceptible smirk appeared on Ethan's lips. "So you 'Googled' me." "That's right," Chloe admitted frankly. "After making you a free 'Awakening,' I figured I should probably know who my partner is." Ethan approached the counter, his gaze still sharp as a razor, but now with a hint of curiosity and challenge. "Partner? I haven't signed any contracts with you." "Not yet," Chloe repeated, "but I did provide you with an exclusive service your private chef never could." She leaned her elbows on the counter, tilting forward slightly. "So, what kind of 'Awakening' do you need today? Or are you ready to pay for a bitter espresso as bitter as your life itself?" Ethan was silent for a moment, staring at her as if trying to read her. The air between them was taut, not with uncomfortable tension, but with a dramatic intensity, like two opponents sizing each other up. "Today, I'll have that 'Awakening'," Ethan said, his voice a bit softer, a concession Chloe immediately recognized. "And I'll pay for it." Chloe smiled triumphantly. "Alright. But I warn you, it can be addictive." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "I'm not easily addicted, Chloe." "Ah, we'll see," she replied, beginning to brew. The whirring of the coffee machine filled the quiet space between them. Ethan stood there, not scrolling on his phone like yesterday, but simply observing Chloe at work. He seemed to be trying to decipher this woman, the only one who didn't seem intimidated by his fame and power. "Don't you have a morning meeting?" Chloe asked, without turning around. "Yes. But I have five minutes to spare," Ethan replied. "Five minutes for a coffee? You must be a superhero." "I'm a busy man," Ethan responded. "Every minute is precious." "I understand," Chloe said, placing the 'Awakening' in front of him. "But sometimes, the most precious minutes are the ones you dedicate to yourself, or to something unrelated to work." Ethan took the coffee, his eyes still filled with contemplation. "Are you always this philosophical?" "Only with worthy people," Chloe winked. "And those who look like they need a little 'light' in the morning." Ethan chuckled softly, a genuine laugh, not the smirk from earlier. "I have to go. See you around." "See you around, Mr. Billionaire," Chloe replied, and Ethan turned and left the shop, leaving behind a lingering scent of coffee and a strange feeling in Chloe's heart. And just as Ethan had said, "see you around" wasn't just an empty phrase. The next day, and the days that followed, Ethan Thorne appeared promptly at 7:30 AM at "The Daily Grind." He still wore his expensive suits, still carried the tense expression of a man shouldering an empire. But each time he came, he no longer ordered the bitter espresso. Instead, he simply said, "Awakening." Their conversations gradually grew longer, no longer limited to coffee orders. Chloe told him stories about the shop, the quirky regulars, the small struggles of running a business. She didn't hide anything, nor did she try to impress him. She was simply herself: a passionate barista, a little impulsive, with a sharp wit hidden behind her free-spirited demeanor. Ethan, on the other hand, rarely spoke about himself. He mostly listened, occasionally offering a concise, intelligent remark, or a profound question that made Chloe think. He didn't flaunt his wealth, but sometimes, an accidental slip of the tongue about a "meeting in Tokyo" or a "billion-dollar project" made Chloe realize the true distance between the two worlds they inhabited. One morning, Ethan arrived later than usual, looking even more exhausted than before. He placed his phone on the counter, its screen displaying dozens of email and message notifications. "You look like you've just fought an army," Chloe commented as she placed the 'Awakening' in front of him. Ethan gave a faint smirk. "Close enough. An all-night negotiation. Sometimes, I wish I could just disappear from this world for a few hours." "Why don't you?" Chloe asked, leaning her elbows on the counter. "Go somewhere, do something you like? It doesn't always have to be about work." Ethan looked at her, his eyes holding a sadness Chloe hadn't seen before. "Do you think I have the time?" "Time is something we create, not something that just appears," Chloe stated frankly. "If you keep burying yourself in work, one day you'll burn out. You're a billionaire; you can do anything you want." "That's the problem," Ethan replied, his voice dropping. "When you have too much to lose, you don't dare to take risks. Every decision is a burden." Chloe looked at him. Suddenly, she saw not just a cold billionaire, but a man shackled by the very empire he had built. "Then you should find something to risk," Chloe said softly. "Something that makes you feel alive again. Or at least, spend one evening without meetings, without deadlines. Take a walk in the park, watch a movie, or simply get a really deep sleep." Ethan was silent, staring at his coffee, as if weighing Chloe's words. "What about you?" he asked unexpectedly. "What are your dreams, Chloe? Besides making good coffee?" Chloe smiled. "Oh, I have a long list of small dreams. One day, I want to open my own chain of coffee shops, with unique recipes no one else has. Or maybe, I'll just drop everything, buy an old truck, and travel across the country, selling coffee in every town I visit." Ethan listened to her, and Chloe could see a different kind of light in his eyes, a subtle admiration. Perhaps, he was drawn to her freedom and her simple yet passionate dreams. "Sounds interesting," Ethan said. "I hope you get to fulfill them." "I definitely will," Chloe replied confidently. "What about you? Do you have any dreams?" Ethan sighed faintly. "My dream is to not have another crisis this week." Chloe laughed. "Well, good luck with that 'dream'." Ethan also smiled lightly. "Thank you, Chloe." He finished his 'Awakening', set the cup down, and stood up. "I have to go. A few billion dollars are waiting for me to sort out." Chloe watched his retreating back disappear behind the door. She knew their worlds were miles apart.
