Chapter 3

Weeks passed, and "The Daily Grind" became an indispensable part of Ethan Thorne's morning routine. He was always punctual, always ordered his "Awakening," and the conversations between him and Chloe gradually grew more comfortable, sometimes even reaching moments where Chloe felt Ethan completely forgot his billionaire status. He was no longer the cold CEO, but simply a tired man seeking a rare moment of peace and a little "light" from the charismatic barista. Chloe, too, grew accustomed to Ethan's presence. She could even gauge his mood by the way he entered the shop, how he set down his phone, or even how he took his first sip of coffee. Behind his aloof and powerful exterior, she saw a lonely man, perpetually stressed and yearning for something money couldn't buy. One Friday morning, as Ethan was sipping his "Awakening," his phone rang incessantly. His face instantly tightened. He answered, his voice abruptly sharp and decisive. "What? What is it? Immediately. I'm coming." Ethan hung up, slamming the phone onto the counter. All sense of peace seemed to vanish from him instantly. His gray eyes darkened, and his face showed clear signs of anger mixed with anxiety. "What's wrong?" Chloe asked, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere. "An incident," Ethan said, standing abruptly. "An internal data leak at the company. I have to go." He hastily pulled out his wallet, placing a $100 bill on the counter. "Keep the change." "Hey, you don't need to give me that much!" Chloe called after him as he rushed towards the door. "Ethan!" But he didn't turn back. He disappeared from the shop as quickly as he'd appeared, leaving Chloe standing there with the money in her hand and an inexplicable sense of worry. She looked out the window, watching his sleek black car speed away. Data leak? Sounds serious. All day, Chloe couldn't fully focus on her work. She constantly checked the news on her phone, but there was no information about Thorne Industries. She wondered if Ethan was okay, if he could resolve the issue. That afternoon, as the shop began to empty, Chloe's phone buzzed. An unknown number. She hesitated before answering. "Chloe Price?" a low, familiar voice echoed. "It's me, Ethan." Chloe startled. "Ethan? You called me?" She felt a warmth spread through her, a sense of relief after a day of worry. "I... I hope I'm not bothering you?" His voice sounded tired, no longer sharp as it had been that morning. "Could I ask you for a favor?" "Of course," Chloe replied instantly, without hesitation. "What is it?" "I'm at the office. You probably know what's going on. Things are pretty chaotic. I need... a coffee. An 'Awakening.' And maybe... something to eat. I haven't eaten all day." Chloe looked at the clock. It was almost 6 PM. "You want me to bring something to your office?" "If you don't mind," Ethan said. "I can't leave right now. And... I really just want your coffee." There was a rare vulnerability in his voice, an admission that he needed her. It made Chloe's heart stir. She had never seen Ethan in such a state. "Alright," Chloe decided. "Give me the address. I'll be there in about twenty minutes." Ethan read her the address, a towering skyscraper of glass and steel in the city center, a symbol of power and wealth. "Thank you, Chloe. So much." After hanging up, Chloe quickly got ready. She brewed a piping hot "Awakening," carefully sealing the lid. She also grabbed a few pastries, and some ham and cheese sandwiches from the shop's refrigerator. He must be starving. She even hastily threw a box of tissues into her bag, for some reason feeling he might need them. The streets were crowded during rush hour, but Chloe drove swiftly. When she arrived in front of the Thorne Industries building, awe washed over her. The building soared, brilliantly lit. The security guard in the lobby greeted her with a surprised look when she mentioned Ethan Thorne's name. Clearly, no one was accustomed to their CEO having private "delivery service" from a coffee shop. She was led to the top floor. The elevator doors opened, and Chloe stepped into an entirely different space. The vast office lobby was eerily quiet, save for the faint clatter of keyboards from a few lit offices. Everything was minimally but luxuriously designed, exuding a cold professionalism. She was directed to a large room at the end of the hallway. When Chloe gently pushed the door open, she saw Ethan sitting at a massive conference table, covered in papers and computer screens. He no longer had his usual impeccable appearance. His tie was loosened, shirt sleeves rolled up, hair slightly disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep. The exhaustion and weariness were clearer than ever. He looked up when he heard the door. A faint smile, mixed with relief, appeared on his lips when he saw her. "Chloe," he said softly, as if she were an apparition. "I'm here," Chloe said, placing the bag of food and coffee on the table. "You don't look so good." Ethan sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Everything... it's more complicated than I thought." Chloe didn't press further. She opened the pastry box, offering him a sandwich. "Eat something first. You can't solve problems on an empty stomach." Ethan took the sandwich, looked at it for a moment, then took a large bite. He closed his eyes as he chewed, as if it were the best meal he had ever tasted. Chloe poured the 'Awakening' into a ceramic mug she had brought and handed it to him. "Thank you," Ethan said, his voice more sincere than ever. He took a sip of coffee, and Chloe could see the tension in his face ease slightly. "So, what's this data leak about?" Chloe asked, sitting in the chair opposite him. Ethan looked at her, seemingly hesitant. "This is top-secret information. But... I think you have a right to know, since you've seen me in this state." He took a deep breath. "Crucial data related to the company's upcoming AI project was stolen. If it falls into the wrong hands, we'll lose billions of dollars and, more importantly, our leading position." Chloe felt a chill run down her spine. This wasn't a small problem. This was a real crisis. "So... have you found out who did it yet?" Ethan shook his head. "Not yet. We're tracing the source. Everyone's a suspect. Trust is shaken. I don't know who to believe anymore." He raised a hand to rub his temple, his helplessness evident. Chloe looked at him, and once again, she saw not a powerful billionaire, but an exhausted man, carrying an immense burden. "You'll figure it out," Chloe said, her voice full of conviction. "You're Ethan Thorne. You built everything from scratch, didn't you? You have the capability. You just need a little calm and a plan." Ethan looked at her, and in his bloodshot eyes, a faint glimmer of hope sparked. "You think so?" "I know so," Chloe affirmed. She reached out, gently placing her hand over his clenched one on the table. "Take a deep breath. Finish that sandwich. And drink all your coffee. Then, start over." Her touch was light, yet it brought a warm surge of energy. Ethan looked down at her hand resting on his, then looked up. His eyes met hers, and in that moment, the noisy world outside seemed to vanish. Only the two of them remained, in a luxurious office, in the midst of an unfolding crisis, yet finding a strange comfort in each other. Ethan didn't pull his hand away. He kept it there, as if seeking an anchor. "You don't have to be here," Ethan said softly. "I don't want to bother you." "I want to be here," Chloe replied, her voice gentle yet firm. "Anyway, I promised to bring you 'Awakening,' didn't I? And right now, you need it more than ever." She smiled, a warm and genuine smile. Ethan also gave a faint, tired smile back. Perhaps, amidst the storm of the billionaire world, a cup of coffee and a barista's smile were what he needed most to "awaken" and find himself again.
