Chapter 4

Chloe's presence in Ethan's office, amidst the storm engulfing Thorne Industries, was a surprise to both of them. She wasn't a CEO, nor a financial analyst, nor a security expert. She was just a barista carrying coffee and sandwiches. But that very normalcy brought a distinct change to the atmosphere. As Chloe sat there, silently observing Ethan work, she clearly saw a transformation in him. Ethan no longer strained to maintain his cold, distant demeanor. He was still decisive, but now there were moments when he paused, sighed, or tiredly rubbed his temples. Chloe knew this was no longer Ethan Thorne, the invincible billionaire from the headlines, but simply Ethan, a man facing a grueling battle. "Have you tried checking recently accessed accounts?" Chloe suddenly spoke up, as Ethan was staring, frustrated, at a screen filled with complex code. "Or any employees with unusual activity?" Ethan looked up at her, surprised. "You... you know something about this?" Chloe shrugged. "A little. I have a friend who's a white-hat hacker. He taught me a few basic things about network security. Sometimes, small details are the key." Ethan was silent, his eyes fixed on Chloe. "Can you tell me more about this friend? Or... could you take a look at this?" He rotated his laptop screen towards her, displaying a complex data table. Chloe moved her chair closer, looking at the screen. Although not an expert, with what her friend had taught her, she could spot a few unusual points in the data stream. "This... looks more like an internal attack than an external one. It seems someone used a valid account to gain access." Chloe's words startled Ethan. He had been so focused on finding external hacker traces that he'd overlooked this possibility. Ethan quickly scrolled through the data table, his eyes stopping at a few details he had missed. "You... you have an eye for this," Ethan said, his voice filled with admiration. "This is a hypothesis my team hasn't even considered." Chloe smiled. "Sometimes, it takes an outsider's perspective to see the obvious." Ethan immediately called his head of IT, relaying Chloe's insights. The conference room began to buzz again. Chloe sat there, listening to complex technical jargon, but she felt a sense of satisfaction seeing her suggestions had helped. Night fell. Rain began to patter outside the large glass windows, and the wind whistled through the skyscrapers. Ethan was still absorbed in his work, but he was no longer alone. Chloe remained there, occasionally pouring him more coffee, offering a pastry, or simply sitting in silence, providing a calm and reassuring presence. Around midnight, Ethan suddenly slapped the table, a spark of insight in his eyes. "That's it! It's Mark's account! He was fired two months ago, but his account was still active in a sub-system we forgot to lock down. He must have left a backdoor!" Excitement and relief flooded Ethan's voice. He immediately ordered his IT team to lock the account, trace all activity, and begin data recovery. The tense atmosphere in the conference room gradually dissipated, replaced by the urgency of an approaching victory. Ethan turned to look at Chloe, a radiant, grateful smile spreading across his face. "Chloe! We found it! Thanks to you!" Chloe also felt relieved and happy for him. "I just offered a few ideas. You're the one who solved it." Ethan stood up, walked around the table, and unexpectedly pulled Chloe into a hug. His arms squeezed tightly, an embrace filled with emotion, almost desperation. Chloe felt his exhaustion, pressure, and the joy of his victory transmit through the hug. She hesitated for a moment, then wrapped her arms around him too. The scent of coffee, the sandalwood from his suit, and Ethan's unique masculine fragrance enveloped her. Her heart beat a little faster. When Ethan released her, he looked directly into her eyes, his gray eyes no longer tired but shining with vitality. "Thank you, Chloe. I don't know how to thank you enough. You... you saved me." "It's nothing," Chloe said, her face slightly flushed. The hug still lingered in her mind. "I was just here to bring you 'Awakening'." Ethan chuckled softly. "You brought more than that." He looked at his watch. "It's late. Would you like me to drive you home?" "It's okay, I have my car," Chloe replied. "And I need to open the shop early tomorrow anyway." "Then..." Ethan said, seeming hesitant. "Perhaps I won't be able to make it to the shop tomorrow morning. I still have a lot of work to do here." "I understand," Chloe said. "Work is work." "But," Ethan continued, his gaze lingering on her face, "I'll be there as early as I can the day after tomorrow. And I'll treat you to a lavish dinner. To thank you." Chloe smiled. "A dinner? Sounds appealing. I'll look forward to it." Ethan nodded, a warm smile on his lips. "Good night, Chloe." "You too, Ethan," Chloe replied. Chloe left the Thorne Industries building, her heart filled with mixed emotions. She had just experienced a dramatic night, witnessing Ethan Thorne in a completely different light. He wasn't just a cold billionaire, but a talented, responsible, and also very vulnerable man. And she, a barista, had become an important part of his battle. She wondered if the dinner Ethan mentioned was just a polite thank you, or a genuine invitation to a different kind of relationship, one that extended far beyond coffee cups and morning small talk. The night wind brushed through her hair, carrying the scent of the city at night and an insatiable curiosity about what was to come.
