JUST PEACE OF MIND...

CHAPTER TWO "Mum, wh... what do you mean by sisters? Mum smiled sadly and began her trip down memory lane. "It was on the sixteenth of December. You and your sisters Daisy and Ivy were out on the beach during the holiday at your grandmother's place. Your dad and I were still a struggling couple and we had no cars then. Later they took a cab home destined for grandma's house. The cab you took was hit behind by a truck with a drunk driver. Your sisters instead of jumping out through the window and leaving you behind, shielded you on both sides with their body and lives. Minutes later when we arrived heart broken at the bloody accident scene, you were the only survivor" Mum was crying profusely, finally I blurted out. "Why did you hide this from me until now" I asked screaming. "Your dad and I didn't want you to feel miserable; or guilty but I've let you in on the secret because it's obvious that you have no conscience" Mum concluded. The puzzle was solved and I could see things for what they were. No wonder the family business was named after them, Daivy for Daisy and Ivy.That was why mum kept her late daughters last picture sacred. I realised I had been crying silently all along only that mum had indeed set the pace. "Mum, I'm sorry and I really wish I could make you feel better" She looked at me with doubt and sighed. "Go to your room Eva and rest. I know you haven't slept for days" She said. " Mum, no matter what may become of me and even though I'm unsure of my fate just know I'm sorry for the emotional trauma and pains I put you through " I said blinking away a tear. " Eva go and get some rest" She persisted. As I left the room, I sighed deeply. Staying with mum for the past twenty two years of my life made me know she had asked me to leave so she could cry her heart out because I knew I had opened up old wounds which had never really healed.... ********** Dad didn't come back until twelve midnight. I waited eagerly for him until I saw his convoy parking at the garage. It took me patience to wait in my room. I knew he would first of all go to mum's room to check on her. His soft and elegant strides resounded on the marble steps. A while later, I heard his steps directed towards my room and my heart missed a beat because I knew mum had told him what had transpired earlier. He entered my room and sat on the reading chair, swinging it round to face me where I sat up in my bed. It was then I noticed the angry expression on his face. "Eva you've gotten yourself into a mess" I whispered to myself. "Eva, I won't seat and watch you send my wife to an early grave are you listening? I nodded in reply but he stood up and left the room. I sighed and laid down on my bed, looking up, for the first time in years I prayed. "O God, I know we've not really been in good terms but all I ask for is peace of mind for my parents, and I know it isn't too much of a favour to ask. You know I had good intentions before things turned out sour...." I ran out of words and gave up trying to pray. Sleep had gone far away from me. I opened my drawer and brought out a sleeping pill and swallowed it, unaccompanied by water. It wasn't long before I slept off.
