The Truth Beneath Midnight

The fire crackled softly between them. Lucien stood motionless near the window while moonlight spilled across the dark floor beneath his feet. Outside, the storm had finally passed, leaving the city wrapped in cold silver light. Evangeline watched him carefully. Ever since Seraphine left, silence had filled the mansion like a living thing. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Finally, she spoke. “You’re hiding something from me.” Lucien’s jaw tightened slightly. “There are many things I have hidden from you.” “That prophecy.” Evangeline stepped closer. “What does it mean?” For several seconds, Lucien said nothing. His crimson eyes remained fixed on the city beyond the glass windows. Then he exhaled quietly. “Centuries ago,” he began softly, “before modern cities existed… vampires ruled openly in parts of the world.” Evangeline remained silent, listening carefully. “Humans feared us,” Lucien continued. “And fear eventually became war.” The way he spoke sounded distant. Like someone remembering ghosts. “There were massacres. Entire bloodlines destroyed. Humans died alongside immortals until both sides nearly collapsed.” The firelight flickered across his pale face. “So the elders created laws,” he said quietly. “Vampires disappeared into the shadows. Hidden from humanity forever.” Evangeline crossed her arms tightly. “And the prophecy?” Lucien’s expression darkened slightly. “There was an ancient seer among the immortals,” he said. “Before her death, she spoke of someone who would one day alter the fate of both species.” His crimson gaze slowly lifted toward her. “A human untouched by compulsion.” The room suddenly felt colder. Evangeline’s heartbeat quickened. “You think that’s me?” “I do not know what to think anymore.” For the first time, uncertainty appeared openly in his voice. Lucien walked slowly toward her. “But no human has ever resisted vampire influence before.” Evangeline swallowed hard. “So now your council thinks I’m dangerous.” “They fear change,” Lucien corrected quietly. “They always have.” “And what about you?” she whispered. “Are you afraid of me too?” The question lingered heavily between them. Lucien stared at her for a long moment before answering. “Yes.” Her chest tightened unexpectedly. “Why?” His gaze softened slightly. “Because every instinct I possess tells me to stay away from you.” He stepped closer again. “But I cannot.” The honesty in his voice caught her completely off guard. For a moment, neither of them moved. Evangeline could hear her own heartbeat clearly now. Fast. Nervous. Dangerous. Lucien’s eyes lowered briefly toward her throat. Hunger flickered across his face for only a second before disappearing again. But she saw it. And somehow… she wasn’t afraid. That realization terrified her more than anything else. “You’re fighting yourself every time you’re near me,” she whispered. Lucien looked away immediately. “Yes.” Silence filled the room once more. Then suddenly— A sharp pain struck Evangeline’s head. She gasped softly, stumbling backward. Fragments of unfamiliar images flashed violently through her mind. Blood. An enormous silver moon. A woman screaming. Ancient symbols carved into stone. And crimson eyes staring down at her through darkness. Evangeline grabbed the edge of the table beside her, breathing unevenly. Lucien crossed the room instantly. “What happened?” “I…” She pressed trembling fingers against her forehead. “I saw something.” His expression sharpened immediately. “What did you see?” The images vanished as quickly as they appeared. “I don’t know,” she whispered shakily. “It felt like… memories.” Lucien’s face darkened. “That should not be possible.” Before Evangeline could respond, a sudden scream echoed somewhere outside the mansion. Both of them froze instantly. Another scream followed. Closer this time. Lucien’s expression became lethal immediately. “Stay here.” He disappeared from the room before she could answer. Evangeline stood frozen for only a second before hearing crashing sounds echo through the mansion corridors. Voices shouted downstairs. Glass shattered violently somewhere in the distance. Fear crawled through her chest. Something had entered the estate. Against her better judgment, she hurried toward the doorway. The mansion hallways felt enormous and unsettlingly empty now. Shadows stretched endlessly beneath dim chandelier lights while distant sounds of fighting echoed from below. Then she heard a growl. Not human. Evangeline stopped instantly. At the far end of the corridor stood a figure partially hidden in darkness. Crimson eyes slowly lifted toward her. A vampire. But not Lucien. This one smiled the moment he saw her. “Well,” he murmured softly, “the rumors were true.” Fear slammed into her instantly. The vampire stepped closer, his movements calm and deliberate. He looked younger than Lucien, perhaps appearing no older than thirty, with dark hair and pale skin almost gray beneath the moonlight. But there was cruelty in his eyes. “You smell…” He inhaled slowly. “…different.” Evangeline backed away immediately. “Stay away from me.” He laughed quietly. “You have no idea what you are, do you?” Before she could answer, the vampire suddenly appeared directly in front of her. Fast. Impossible. Evangeline gasped sharply as cold fingers wrapped around her throat. “You’ve caused quite a problem for our world,” he whispered. Terror flooded her body. Then a violent force suddenly slammed the vampire backward across the hallway. Lucien. He hit the other vampire hard enough to crack the wall beside them. Dust exploded into the air. For the first time, Evangeline saw genuine fury on Lucien’s face. “You touched her,” he said coldly. The entire mansion seemed to grow darker around him. The other vampire slowly stood, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth before laughing softly. “There he is,” he mocked. “The monster everyone fears.” Lucien’s crimson eyes glowed violently. “No,” he said quietly. “You have not seen the monster yet.”
