Chapter NineThe man who walked into the bar said simply that Gus had sent him. He knew who Cleveland was because the bartender nodded in his direction when the man appeared in the doorway. Cleveland finished off his beer and, without a word, followed the man to his car. After the man drove off, he turned to Cleveland and asked, “Long trip?” “Long enough,” Cleveland said, and that was the extent of the conversation between the two men until they reached Gus's modest home fifteen minutes later. “This is it,” the man said. “Thanks,” Cleveland said and headed for the door as the man drove off. Cleveland rang the doorbell and Larry rose from his chair and opened the door. The living room of Gus's single-family, one-story home was neat, clean and simply furnished.
