CHAPTER5

The Blood Moon hung high in the sky, painting the forest in hues of crimson and shadow. Lyra’s breaths came in shallow gasps as she sprinted through the trees, her heart hammering against her ribs. The darkness chased her, its whispers curling around her mind like tendrils of smoke. “You cannot run. You cannot hide.” She pushed harder, branches clawing at her skin as she stumbled through the underbrush. Her wolf snarled inside her, fighting for control, but Lyra kept it at bay. She couldn’t shift. Not yet. Behind her, the shadows twisted and churned, a dark presence moving through the trees. Kael. She could feel him now, his energy brushing against her mind like a ghost. He was searching for her, his emotions a chaotic storm. Regret. Pain. Fear. But she couldn’t stop. Not until she knew what the darkness wanted. The whispers grew louder, slithering through her thoughts. “He left you. He abandoned you. Let me in, and I will make him pay.” Lyra squeezed her eyes shut, shaking her head. “No. You’re not real.” The shadows laughed. Suddenly, the ground disappeared beneath her feet. She tumbled down a steep slope, crashing through the undergrowth before landing hard on her back. Pain shot through her body, and she gasped for air. When she opened her eyes, she was surrounded. Dark figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glowing in the moonlight. Wolves. Dozens of them. Their fur was black as night, their eyes burning with crimson light. The Shadow Pack. A low growl rumbled through the clearing as a massive figure stepped forward. The Alpha. His fur was darker than the void, his eyes twin pools of molten red. The air grew heavy, the darkness pressing against her skin. “You are mine,” he growled, his voice echoing through the night. “You have always been mine.” Lyra pushed to her feet, her body trembling. “I don’t belong to anyone.” The Alpha laughed, a dark, rumbling sound. “You will.” The wolves lunged. Lyra shifted, her body twisting and breaking as her wolf tore free. She met them head-on, teeth flashing and claws slashing through the darkness. For a moment, she held her ground. Then the shadows surged forward, wrapping around her like a cloak. Lyra screamed as the darkness poured into her veins, cold and insidious. Her wolf howled in agony, the darkness consuming her piece by piece. And then she felt it. Kael. His presence crashed into her like a tidal wave, his energy wrapping around her like a lifeline. “Lyra!” his voice echoed through the bond, desperate and raw. “Fight it! Don’t let it take you!” She reached for him, their bond flaring to life once more. The darkness hissed and recoiled, but it was too late. Lyra collapsed to the ground, the shadows wrapping around her like a shroud. Kael burst into the clearing, his eyes wild with fear. “Lyra!” He dropped to his knees beside her, pulling her into his arms. Her eyes fluttered open, dark and unreadable. “It’s too late,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “It’s already inside me.” The darkness laughed. Kael tightened his grip, his heart shattering. “Not yet,” he whispered. “I’m not giving up on you.” The Blood Moon burned bright overhead, casting long shadows across the forest. And somewhere in the darkness, something stirred. Kael could feel the darkness pressing against him, cold and relentless. His arms tightened around Lyra, pulling her closer as if his touch alone could chase it away. Her breathing was shallow, her body trembling against his. He cupped her face, his heart aching at the sight of her. “I’m here,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “I’ll always be here.” Lyra’s eyes fluttered open, dark and unreadable. For a moment, there was nothing but silence between them. Then her lips parted, her voice barely a whisper. “Why?” she asked, her eyes searching his face. “Why did you leave me?” Kael’s heart clenched. He had no excuse, no justification for what he had done. “I was a fool,” he said softly, his thumb brushing against her cheek. “I thought I was protecting you. But all I did was hurt you.” Tears welled in Lyra’s eyes. “I needed you.” “I know,” Kael whispered. “And I failed you. But I won’t fail you again.” The darkness stirred, its whispers curling around them. “Lies,” it hissed. “He will abandon you again. Let me in, and I will never leave you.” Lyra squeezed her eyes shut, her hands clutching Kael’s shirt. “Make it stop,” she whispered. “Please, Kael. Make it stop.” Kael pulled her closer, pressing his forehead against hers. “I’m here,” he said again. “I won’t let it take you.” The darkness surged forward, cold and insidious. Kael felt it pressing against him, trying to tear Lyra away from him. But he held on, his grip tightening around her. “Fight it,” he whispered. “You’re stronger than this. We’re stronger than this.” Lyra’s body convulsed, her eyes snapping open. The darkness swirled around her, tendrils of shadow curling along her skin. Her wolf howled inside her, fighting against the darkness. Kael pressed his lips to her forehead. “I love you,” he whispered. “Come back to me.” For a moment, there was nothing but silence. Then Lyra gasped, her body arching as the darkness screamed. The shadows writhed and twisted, recoiling from Kael’s touch. Lyra clung to him, her nails digging into his skin. “No!” the darkness hissed. “She is mine!” “Not anymore,” Kael growled, his eyes burning with determination. The darkness shrieked, the shadows retreating into the night. Lyra collapsed into Kael’s arms, her body trembling. “It’s over,” Kael whispered, holding her close. “It’s over.” Lyra looked up at him, tears streaming down her face. “You came for me.” “Always,” Kael said softly, brushing a lock of hair from her face. “I’ll always come for you.” They sat in the clearing, holding each other as the Blood Moon faded from the sky. The darkness was gone, but its whispers would haunt them forever. And somewhere in the shadows, something watched. Waiting. But for now, they were safe. And that was enough.
