I shot to my feet and whipped my head around searching in vain for the source. “Where’d that come from?”
My host, too, now stood at full attention and a frown creased his lips as he scoured the room. “It appears to have come from the basement, but that is not possible. No creature can enter my castle without my permission.”
His words reminded me of my adventure with Eva’s house, and the unsolved mystery of how Pomo became locked in her basement. “How do you get down there?”
Percy nodded at a door set into the wall at the far-left end of the hall near the stairs. “That door leads to the basement, but the dank underbelly of the castle isn’t safe for mere souls.”
I grabbed his hand and tugged him toward the entrance. “Then I’ll take you down there for protection.”
