Betty woke up in a strange bed, in a strange room. She could hardly see as her face were swollen up like a watermelon. Her body was stiff and pain pulsed through her chest with every breath she took. She was confused and scared. The last thing Betty remembered was watching the men lowering her mother’s cheap coffin into her grave. She broke out in a cold sweat. Mr. Jackson had given her only two hours to get back to the factory. She still did not know where she was, but she knew she was late for work. Panic set in. She could not lose her job.
